Course Description

Research Methods for Mangers is designed to provide students with a sound understanding of
the use of scientific approach in business research fields. It introduces students to the research
process and analytical skills with particular reference to business research.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

 understand the principles of scientific research methods and identify and develop a
research problem and discuss its relevance;

 identify the combination of research skills which are relevant to a specific research
topic; and be able to develop appropriate research questions/ hypotheses;

 Describe the elements of a literature review and conduct an annotated bibliography on


a specific research topic;

 Develop a research proposal; and build the ability to read, understand and critically
examine journal articles and other research outputs that use qualitative and
econometric analysis.

 be able to process, analyse data, make claims, write and effectively communicate the
research results as well develop and improve their ability to articulate and present
empirical results in a report or research paper format

Description of assessment methods:


Paper 1 Research Topic: Submit an idea for a research study based on a business/economic
problem. Write the title of the study. Explain your overarching aim for the study. What is the
problem? Why are you passionate about it? What is the significance of it? Draft at least two
research questions. Consider vague definitions. Format the citations and bibliography
correctly for your citation or referencing style.

Paper 2 Annotated Bibliography: Prepare and submit an annotated bibliography of twenty
(20) articles from academic, peer-reviewed and/or scholarly journals. These articles should be
related to your idea for a research study (e.g., Paper 1). The annotated bibliography will serve
as a resource for developing and writing your literature review and research proposal. Format
the citations and bibliography correctly using endnote, qiqqa, medley or other reference
manager.

Paper 3: Literature Review: Prepare and submit a relevant literature review to allow your
reader some insight into the background of your topic (e.g., Papers 1 & 2). Format the
citations and bibliography correctly using reference manager and citation generators. You
have to rely more on peer-reviewed journals, hot papers and highly cited articles to compile
your literature review.

Paper 4: Research Proposal: Prepare and submit a prospectus indicating the background of
the problem, the problem statement, the purpose of the study, the study’s hypothesis(es), a
review of the literature (this should be your revised and improved version of Paper 3) and the
methodology to be employed in your proposed study. You will develop a questionnaire to be
used to solve your problem. In a Prospectus, you will devise a research plan that will explain
your ideas in a structured format for your analysis – You will do everything except collect the
data. Format the citations and bibliography correctly using reference manager and citation
generators.
