the Direct Attention Thinking Tools. He is the originator of the concept of Lateral
Thinking, which is now part of language and is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary .

Concept of 6 thinking hats
This technique will help you experiment with different ways of thinking and to see
your idea from different angles. This forces you to move outside your habitual
thinking style, and helps you to get a more rounded view of a situation. The main idea
is to have the group only “wear one hat at a time” when considering a problem. The
wearing of the hat is metaphorical. At any one time, everyone will wear the same
colour and look at the problem from only one perspective, the perspective indicated
by the hat colour.
Next question is
Why Six Thinking Hats?
Many people think from a very rational, positive viewpoint. Often, though, they may
fail to look at a problem from an emotional, intuitive, creative or negative viewpoint.
The six hats represent six types of thinking. You 'wear' one of these hats to help you
think about an idea in a particular way.
Now I will talk about Traditional thinking and parallel thinking
Traditional thinking is

● Take sides. Opposite point of view.

● Argue your point
● Prove other side wrong
This is all traditional type of thinking
What is parallel thinking ?
• At any moment everyone is looking in the same direction.
• Each thinker puts forward his or her thoughts in parallel with the thoughts of others
• Guides thought processes in one direction at a time so we can effectively analyse
issues, generate new ideas, and make better decisions.
Blue hat
Whenever you start a brainstorming session, first put on the blue hat. It’s the hat
to think about thinking. Think of it as zooming out and getting a 10,000 foot view
on the problem you’re tackling first.

Since you’re setting up the perimeter of your team effort here, one group
member, usually the leader or facilitator of the meeting, will have to keep
wearing the blue hat throughout the session, to make sure everyone sticks to the
rules.

For example, project managers responsible for pulling together many

elements to complete a project could be said to wear a Blue Hat!
The White Thinking Hat

This thinking hat is focused on information. So, they collect this data and information
to guide the team’s decision-making and efficiency. The white hat is neutral and
objective. That means they should not be passing judgment while wearing this hat.
Instead, white hats are merely collecting.

The author offers an example to help you remember the information-oriented nature
of white hats. He explains that paper is generally white and we use paper to write
information. So, white hats write facts on white papers.

Green Hat
This hat aims to create the solution to the problems. The green hat
is also responsible for answering the statement of provocation and
investigation. So, they investigate and seek solutions, ideas and
alternative possibilities.

De Bono takes time to explain what he means by the statement of

provocation. This may immediately sound like you are starting an
argument. The reality is that the statement of provocation is about
proposing hypotheses or scenarios and seeing where they go. For
example, if Superman fought with Incredible Hulk, who would win?
That is a statement of provocation. It provides the team with a spark
to start thinking in an interesting way and offer alternative
viewpoints.

Over to you Shivani

Red Thinking Hat
The red thinking hat pays attention to their feelings and responds
accordingly. While wearing this hat, you should be relying on your
gut reactions. You do not need to justify your intuitions or gut
reactions. Instead, just provide statements based on how you feel.
This hat is all about expressing how you feel in every moment. It is
fine to have a change in your emotional state. For example, you
might dislike the sound of an idea at first but then change your
mind. Instead of worrying about seeming inconsistent, De Bono
suggests you state every change in your emotions.

Black Hat
As their name suggests, black hat thinkers look at the potentially negative
outcomes of a decision. They’re cautious and look for reasons why something
might not work, asking questions like:
Black hat thinking covers bad point judgment. Logic is applied to
identifying flaws, barriers and obstacles. The black hat is also
concerned with difficulties, weaknesses and dangers that you might
face. The crucial point is that while wearing the black hat, you have
to give justification for all judgments. You have to give your logical
reasoning. Based on this point, black hat thinking is the opposite of
red hat thinking.

Example: When we wear black hats, it’s time to talk about what can go wrong.
What are the reasons why a deadline extension might not work? How can the
request for additional budget money cause problems?

Yellow Hat
Yellow hats are fun to be around because they are perpetual optimists. They
are quick to see the benefits of a decision and will keep you going when
everything is bleak and giving up is the least difficult option.

It helps wearers to think positively about potential outcomes,

seek the merits of an idea, and reach an optimistic assessment
of how it can work. This hat helps maintain momentum and a
positive spirit in the face of a challenging situation.
