CONCEPT OF NEWS

1. WHAT IS NEWS?
news is an unpublished account of human activity which seeks to interest,
inform or educate the readers.
EVERYTHING WHICH IS RECENT, EXTRA-ORDINARY AND UNUSUAL, PRESENTED IN HUMAN
INTEREST IS CALLED NEWS.
a. the first requirement of news is that a writing should not have been
published anywhere before. It should come to the readers for the first time. It is
like a hot cake coming straight from the oven. Anything that has come to print
before does not consist of news. It is anything but news.
b.the second ingredient is human activity. News must relate in one way
or the other to the human activity. Human beings must be innvolved in an event
embodied in the news.
c. the third important factor is that it should be of some interest to
the readers. The interest may be political or emotional.
d. the fourth important pre-requisite is that it should be designed to
impart some sort of information to the readers.

2. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY CHANGING CONCEPT OF NEWS?

media is very far from the ideals of the 60's when news was all about doing
the right thing and educating the readers. In old times, news was what came from
newspapers and word of mouth. Today, the 'news' is just not informing, but also
doing it fast, effectively and also analysing it for the GEN X. Being in the eye of
the public domain has created a tremendous pressure on the publications as well as
the news channels.
with various multimedia options from streaming video online to blogs, the
options are varied for today's reader. Journalists are working harder than ever to
cater the needs of the readers. Playing an active role in the process of
collecting, reporting, analysing and disseminating news and othe rinformation was
the defination of news in older times. Today it is defined as - revelation, current
affairs, gossip, news information, imparting facts. There is no "news" anymore,
rather everything is news today.

BEFORE ___ * newspaper used to be of 6-8 pages only. * it was all

about politics and human related. *crime used to have 3-4 small boxes in the corner
of a page * Celebrities used to have parties before as well but they were not
printed in the newspapers
NOW ______ * Pg-3 news has itself been given 6-8 pages because
there is so much content and alotof the money comes from the paid interviews the
newspaper does. *Today we have crime, health, fashion, human related stories, etc.
* There are specially reporters assigned to go cover crime bytes.

3.ELEMENTS OF NEWS?
news is a piece of information about an event that would be a matter of
interest for a large number of readers. History never actually repeats, but it does
seem to repeat tendencies. similarly news stories never duplicate each other but
they do have a way of falling in definite categories. Analysing them as we read
them from day to day or listen to them as they come from different sources of news
like radio, tv. We can distinguish elements of news interest which recur
constantly. Sometimes a news story will contain several of these interst provoking
news elements other times only one.

There are Nine elements of news that will enhance the news value.
* timeliness/ immediacy * proximity * prominience *consequence *human
interest *conflict * drama *oddity *progress

a. IMMEDIACY - it is an important pre-requisite of news. A

reporter usually places emphasis on the latest angles of an event. The words
"today" and 'tommorow" are related in most of the news stories. Occasionally a
story may concern events that happened in the past. In this case, the reporter
discusses some present aspect of the past event.
b. PROXIMITY - it refers to the geographical nearness . Normally
a reader is more interested in an event geographically nearer than the one that has
taken place in some remote part of the world.

consequences.
d. PROMINIENCE - it means persons, places, things and situations
