It will come up on two acres of land on the government guest house premises

Historically significant Varkala will be home to the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA).

The centre, the second in the country after the premier NCPA at Nariman Point in Mumbai, will come up on two acres
on the government guest house premises. It is aimed at popularising culture, heritage, arts, and tourism.

The ₹10-crore first phase of the high-end tourism and cultural project is part of a ₹4,000-crore comprehensive
infrastructure and tourism development plan for Varkala, which has a prominent place on the world tourism map.
Nearly 50,000 foreign and 1.60 lakh domestic tourists visit the place annually.

The centre will be developed to international standards and forge a tie-up with the Association of Asia-Pacific
Performing Arts Centre (AAPPAC), Singapore, for cultural and technology transfers across the globe.

Vision Varkala
The project is being executed under Vision Varkala Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (VVID), a special
purpose vehicle set up to tap funds from various departments and agencies for developing Varkala.
On completion, the NCPA Varkala will popularise extinct art forms across the globe by joining hands with other PACs
and in association with the AAPPAC. The centre will have facilities to stay and study the art and culture of Kerala. The
ultimate aim is to develop the centre as “God’s own village.”
The activities proposed include ‘theme nights,’ laser shows during the tourist season, and staging of various art forms
such as Theyyam, Padayani, Oppana, and Margamkali. Construction of Koothambalam, amphitheatre, Kalarithara,
organic garden, convention centre, sculpture museum, and an Ayurveda-Yoga centre has been proposed .
An art centre with deemed university status, arts and cultural exchange programme, and Annual Varkala Fest are the
other goals of the centre.

The work order for the NCPA was handed over by VVID vice chairaman V. Joy, MLA, to HLL Life Care Ltd. on
Wednesday.
Like the NCPA Mumbai that has emerged as the largest performing arts centre, the VVID authorities are hopeful that
NCPA-Varkala too will have an iconic status.

Another 10 acres of land will be required for the second and third phases of the centre.
