Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared
for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons
in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing
this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s
assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of
each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We
trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher
are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and
reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based
learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before
performing each task.

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is


here to help you master the reading of phrases, sentences, stories,
and poems consisting of long /ā/, / ī /, / ō/, and /ū/ words. The
scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level
of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:


• read phrases, sentences, stories, and poems consisting of
long /ā/, / ī /,
/ ō/, and /ū/ words
1. identify words with long /ā/, / ī /, /ō/, and /ū/ sounds
2. answer questions about the stories and poems correctly

These are the things that you are going to learn and the skills

Shane and Kate are sisters. Shane is nine years old while Kate
is eight. Mother Sue and Father Luke train their children to
become responsible. They believe that the development of good
values starts at home.
Shane and Kate wake up early and help their parents do the
household chores. Shane waters the plants while Kate helps their
mother cooks rice and prepare food.
Though it is vacation, they never forget to study their lessons.
They love reading, writing, and drawing. When they grow up, they
want to become teachers like their parents. They want to help the
children to have a bright future.

Direction: Read and understand the Key Points carefully.

Key Points
The words Jane and vase are spelled with a in the
middle and end with e. They are pronounced with a
long /ā/ sound as in rake, pale, and same.
The words Mike, like, ride, and bike are spelled with
i in the middle and end with e. They are pronounced
with a long /ī/ sound as in ice, time, and kite.
The word Hope is spelled with letter o in the middle
and ends with letter e. It is pronounced with a long /ō/
sound as in bone, rope, and cone.
The words Luke and flute are words with letter u in
the middle and end with letter e. They are pronounced
with a long /ū/ sound as in blue, glue, and clue.
However, long /ū/ can be also sounded as in cute,
mute, cube, and tune.
Remember, a word with a short vowel is changed
into a long vowel by placing a silent letter “e” at the
end of a word. A long vowel is pronounced the same
way as the name of the letter itself.
