Course description and Objective:

This course is an introduction to the behavioral science of economics which focuses on the
aggregate behavior of households, firms and the government. Topics covered include gross
domestic product, national income, economic growth, unemployment, inflation, the business
cycle, fiscal policy and monetary policy, and international trade. Upon completion of this
course, students should be able to analyze macroeconomic trends and apply them to real
life conditions.

Prerequisites:

Thorough knowledge of college algebra and two dimensional graphs are expected.

 Overview and basic tools of analysis  Money, interest and income


 National income accounting  Commercial and central banking
 Consumption and investment  Monetary and fiscal policy
 Business cycle and the theory of  Unemployment and inflation
aggregate demand  International trade and exchange
 The multiplier model rates

Mankiw, N. Gregory. Principles of Macroeconomics. Delhi: Cenage Learning. 6th edition.

Attendance:
Regular attendance and punctuality is desirable. Attendance is not limited to your
physical presence in class; class participation is necessary. I expect an interacting class
where you are welcome to raise questions or opinions at any point. Your timely presence
at class will help you and others to concentrate on class and take out the maximum from
class lecture. Class door will be locked up five minutes post the scheduled start time and
you will be considered absent arriving late. Upto two absences will be considered without
penalty; however, marks for class performance for those absences will be deducted.

Assessment:

 20% 1st term  5% Class performance


 25% Midterm  10% Attendance
 10% Assignment/ presentation
 30% Final exam

Grading system (old):

 90 and above A  60-65 C


 85-90 A-  55-60 C-
 80-85 B+  50-55 D+
 75-80 B  45-50 D
 70-75 B-  Below 45 F
 65-70 C+

Grading system (new):

 80 and above A+  55-60 B-


 75-80 A  50-55 C+
 70-75 A-  45-50 C
 65-70 B+  40-45 D
 60-65 B  Below 40 F
Rules of Conduct:
You will be expected to be respectful and tolerant to the whole class. Please refrain from
any unusual behavior which could hart the beliefs and/ or sentiments of others. You are
expected to keep your mobile phone in silence during class time and abstain from any
kind of interaction through it. There will be no make ups for assignments or exams unless
I decide a case exceptional.

Plagiarism:
There will be zero tolerance for plagiarism. Plagiarism includes but not limited to
cheating, copying, sharing assignments and exam scripts and using other people’s idea
without proper citation. You will receive a zero in this course attempting any form of
plagiarism and might be kept in academic probation.
