The Tree, The Child & The Wise Man
It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.
- Julius Caesar
A man planted a tree on the day he was blessed with a son. He looked after both, keeping them out of harm’s way to help them both grow. When the man finally grew old, the tree was tall and strong, able to stand against the wind and provide shelter from the sun and rains, all while giving ripe fruits. The old man would often talk to the tree but no one else quite understood the friendship between the two.
The son of the old man was unhappy with life and complained a lot to his father. His father would sit quietly and listen, but never offered solutions to his hardships. One day, when the son was complaining, his father took hold of his hand and led him to the tree in the backyard.
He told his son that he looked after them both when they were young and made sure they grew up out of harm’s way. But over time he realized that the wise old tree knew something most humans didn’t. The son asked his father what it was the tree knew. The father told him that this tree was once so fragile that a strong wind could have uprooted it so it needed care and protection. But slowly over time by facing the winds, rain and heat of the sunshine the tree became strong enough to stand alone, without protection and even bear fruits for others.
The son, still confused, said, ‘I do not understand.’
The father replied, ‘Son, you may have grown up physically like this tree, but there are still many things you need to face alone to learn to become a man. You must learn to face the very things I protected from as a child. You must learn to not only
