NOTES
2. The examination paper is comprised of five questions. out ol which you shall answer
only FOUR QUESTIONS of your choice. Answer the questions within the blank spaces
provided under each question in this booklet. Do not use the reverse side. Each question
is worth 25 marks, and the entire examination is worth 100 marks.
3. On the table below, clearly identify which guestion should not be marked. If all five
questions are found to have been answered with no one clearly identified to be
excludedfrom getting marked, then Qi will be eliminated automatically.

4 Ao questions to be asked in the exam. i/in doubt about any question. c/ear/i state your
assumption in answering the question.
Part marks 1or an answer will only he granted if the correct methodology is clearly
shown.
6. The last page of this booklet includes some useful formulas and equations.
Do Not Detach any pages. including the formula sheet.
Qi: In the magnetic system of Figure-i, the magnetic material can he considered to be of
infinite permeability. The coil wound on the left-hand side leg has N = 600 turns, and the
air gap on the right-hand side is of the dimensions sho n in the figurL fringing 1% ncgligible

Q3: Figure-3 shows an elevator system in which a cable is wound around a grooved cylindrical
sheave (dnirn) that has the elevator cage on one end and a counterweight on the other. The
sheave is of the radius r = 0.25 in and driven by a separately excited DC motor through a
1:8 step-down gearbox, such that a forward rotation of the motor translates into an upward
movement of the cage. The empty cage weighs 150 kg more than the counterweight does.
The DC motor has an armature resistance of R = 0.6 fl, and its open-circuit armature
voltage at a shaft speed of 1170 rpm is reported in Table-3 for different values of the field
current. The armature is energized by a variable DC power supply. Rotational losses and
friction may be ignored.

Q5: FIGURE-5(a) shows that a twoquadrant PWM chopper is used to charge a car battery off a
DC source, VDC 16 V. The battery can be regarded as the series connection of an em1
