Introduction to Emerging Technologies

Assignment
Activity 1.1
➢ Define emerging technologies?
➢ Define Technology and Evolution in the context of your prior knowledge and compare
it with the discussion given below?

Emerging technology is a term generally used to describe a new technology, but it

may also refer to the continuing development of existing technology. The term
commonly refers to technologies that are currently developing, or that are
expected to be available within the next five to ten years, and is usually reserved
for technologies that are creating or are expected to create significant social or
economic effects.
Technology : The meaning "science of the mechanical and industrial arts .
Evolution : means the process of developing by gradual changes.

Activity 1.2
➢ List out at list top five currently available emerged technologies?

List of some currently available emerged technologies

Artificial Intelligence
Internet of Things (IoT)
Robotic Processor Automation (RPA)
Cloud Computing
Big Data
Activity 1.3
➢ What are the most important inventions of industrial revolutions?

The Most Important Inventions of the Industrial Revolution

Transportation: The Steam Engine, The Railroad, The Diesel Engine, The
Airplane.
Communication : The Telegraph,The Transatlantic Cable,The Telephone.
Industry: The Cotton Gin. The Sewing Machine. Electric Lights

Activity 1.4
➢ Describe the social, economic, and environmental impact of the Industrial Revolution
and make connections between the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the
ideological and political responses?

Industrialization brought countless positive and negative impacts. From these

positive impacts can be mentioned as products were cheaper, cities flourished and
more jobs were available.
From negative ones, Environmental impact-there are 4 major impacts in industrial
revolution air water soil and habitat. Air pollution caused by the smoke and
emission generated by burning fossil fuels. Water pollution when the factories
built next to natural water resources their waste toxins pollute the water. soil
contamination when heavy metals like lead are mixed with soil. Finally habitat
destruction, as forests cut down ecosystems destroyed .

➢ Discusse the relationship between the industrialized and no industrialized parts of the
world by demonstrating the cases of China, Egypt, and India?

In industrialized parts of the world, there is an economic growth and job

opportunities for the people, technological development, and the generous supply
of the basic elements such as the land ,labour and capital is there. For instance,
india and china together created approximately 13.5 million jobs and contributed
1.8 percentage points to the overall world GDP last year.
Whereas in non industrialized parts of the world, these basic elements are not
supplied sufficiently, for example Egypt, although Egypt begun industrialization
long ago, is still lagging far behind other countries that have begun
industrialization lately.

➢ To write about the First, Second, Third and Fourth Industrial Revolution. After you
are completed writing then read the discussion below and then compares your notes with
it. To write your note, use the space provided below?
IR was first coined in the 1760s, during the time where this revolution began. The
transitions in the first IR included going from hand production methods to

machines, the increasing use of steam power the development of machine tools
and the rise of the factory system.
The Second IR began somewhere in the 1870s. The advancements in IR 2.0
included the development of methods for manufacturing interchangeable parts and
widespread adoption of pre-existing technological systems such as telegraph and
railroad networks.

Third Industrial Revolution (IR 3.0). IR 3.0 introduced the transition from
mechanical and analog electronic technology to digital electronics which began
from the late 1950s. Due to the shift towards digitalization, IR 3.0 is also called
“Digital Revolution”. The core factor of this revolution is the mass production and
widespread use of digital logic circuits and its derived technologies such as the
computer, handphones and the Internet
Activity 1.4
➢ What do you think that IR 4.0 differs from the previous IR (i.e. 1-3)?

It differs from others by it contains more auto machines, bridge physical and
digital world through cyber physical systems, enabled by industrial IoT and so on.
Activity 1.5
➢ Discus about Agricultural Revolutions, Information Revolutions and level of the
industrial revolution in Ethiopia and also compare with UK, USA, and China?

Since Ethiopia is one of the original centers for crop and livestock domestication,
the agricultural production has increased mainly as a result of crop area sown.

In the recent year, the Ethiopia’s health sector plans to make a transformation on
information revolution with the health sector, so that it ultimately impact the
access quality and equity of healthcare delivery at all levels in the country.

Industrialization is the process by which an economy moves from primarily

agrarian production to mass produced and technologically advanced goods and
services. When we compare our countr with those of USA, UK and China, we are
a bit past behind, but now we are on the way, for instance in Ethiopia industrial
parks are springing up across the country.

Activity 2.1
➢ What is data science? Can you describe the role of data in emerging technology?

Data science is a multi-disciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes,

algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured, semi-
structured and unstructured data.

➢ What are data and information?

Data can be defined as a representation of facts, concepts, or instructions in a

formalized manner, which should be suitable for communication, interpretation, or
processing, by human or electronic machines. It can be described as unprocessed
facts and figures. It is represented with the help of characters such as alphabets (A-
Z, a-z), digits (0-9) or special characters (+, -, /, *, <,>, =, etc.).
information is the processed data on which decisions and actions are based.

➢ What is big data?

Big data is the term for a collection of data sets so large and complex that it
becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools or
traditional data processing applications
Activity 2.2
➢ Describe in some detail the main disciplines that contribute to data science.

The disciplines for data science include computer science, machine learning,
statistics, mathematics, probability, Deep learning, etc…
➢ Let the teacher explain the role of data scientists and students may write a small report
on
the same.

A data scientist’s role combines computer science, statistics and mathematics.

They analyze, process, and model data then interpret the results to create
actionable plans.

Activity 2.3

➢ Discuss the main differences between data and information with examples.

Data is individual unit that contains raw material which does not carry any specific
meaning, while information is a group of data that collectively carry a logical
meaning.
Data doesn’t depend on information, while information depends on data
Data is measured in bytes, bits while information is measured in meaningful units
like time, quantity etc.
➢ Can we process data manually using a pencil and paper? Discuss the differences with
data processing using the computer.

Yes we can process data manually with paper and pencil, but computer assisted
data processing has lower proportion of making mistakes and taking taime when
compared to manual data processing.
