INTRODUCTION

1.1:- Introduction to Textile Industry

5
India is a traditional textile-oriented country with textiles in general, and cotton in
particular. India enjoys the position of being one of the world’s top producers of
Yarns and fabrics, and the export quality of its products is increasing day by day.
Textile industry is one of the biggest and ancient industries in India. Textile Industry
in India is self-sufficient and an independent industry and has great diversification
and versatility.
The Textile Industry can be classified into two categories i.e. the organised sectors of
mills and the unorganised sectors which are decentralized. The organised sector of the
textile industry is defined by mills. It could be any type- spinning mill or may be
composite mill. Composite mill is one where the spinning, weaving and processing
facilities are carried out under one roof. The decentralized sector is mainly working in
the weaving activity, which makes it excessively dependent on the organized sector
for Yarn requirements. This decentralized sector consists of the three major segments
- power loom, handloom and hosiery. In addition to the above, there are the
readymade garments as well as carpet manufacturing units which are also found in
the decentralized sector.
The Indian Textile Industry has a great influence in the economic life of the country.
It is the second largest textile industry in the world after China. Other than providing
one of the basic necessities of life i.e. cloth; the Textile industry also contributes
about 14 percent to the country’s industrial output and 17 percent to the export
earnings. After agriculture, this industry stands second in provides employment to the
maximum number of people in India, around 35 million people.
Besides this, another 50 million people are engaged in auxiliary activities.
In the race of production, India stands first in the production of jute, second in the
production of silk, third in the production of cotton and cellulosic fibre or Yarn and
the fourth largest producer of synthetic fibres or Yarn. Textile industry also
contributes around 4 percent of the GDP, 9 percent of the excise collections, 18
percent of the employment in industrial sector, and enjoys 16 percent share in the
country’s export. This industry also provides the country around 25 percent share in
the world’s trade of cotton Yarn. In the international market, India is recognised as
the largest exporter of Yarn. Also, India has a share of 25 percent in the world’s
cotton Yarn export market as per 2012 year’s records of the ministry. India also
contributes for 12 percent of the world’s production of textile fibres and Yarn. Indian
textile industry is the second largest industry in the world following china in terms of
spindle age, and has a share of 23 percent of the world’s spindle capacity. India also
has around 6 percent of the global rotor capacity. The country also enjoys the highest
loom capacity, including the handlooms, and has a share of 61 percent in the world
loom age.

History
The archaeological surveys and studies have found that the people of Harappa
civilization knew about weaving and spinning of cotton way before four thousand
years. The weaving and the spinning materials are found in the Vedic Literature as
well.
Textile trade in India started during the early centuries. The fabrics like the block
printed and resist-dyed has its the origin in Gujarat. This proved the large extent of
the cotton textiles to the Egypt or the Nile civilisation in the medieval times. Large
quantities of the north Indian silk were traded through the silk route in china to other
western countries. The Indian silks were often exchanged with the western countries
for their spices in the barter system. Gradually, there was development of the
nationalist movements like the famous Swadeshi movement which was headed by
Aurobindo Ghosh
There was export of the Indian silk, Muslin cloth of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa also
to other countries by the East India Company. Bhilwara is also known as the
textile city. Production in decentralised sector
India secures the position of second largest producer of fibre in the world and the
major fibre produced is cotton. There are many other fibres produced in India such as
silk, jute, wool and man-made fibre. 60% of the textile industry in India is based on
cotton.
The strong domestic demand and the revival of the economic markets by 2009 have
resulted in the huge growth of the Indian textile industry. The domestic cotton price
was shot up by 50% in December 2010 as compared to the December prices in 2009.
The reason behind the high rise in price was the floods in China and Pakistan. India
also showed a high production of textile i.e., 325 lac bales for 2010-11. There has
been increase of seven percent in India’s share of global textile trading. the major
problem for the domestic producers of the country are the increasing prices.
SECTORS;
• Artificial Fibres: The manufacturing of the clothes using fibres or filament
synthetic yarns are included in it. Its production takes place in the big power
loom factories. They hold the largest sector of about 4 percent of the textile
production of India.
• The Cotton Sector: It is the second most prevailing sector in the Indian textile
industry. It provides employment to a large amount of people but the
production and employment of the cotton fibre is seasonal depending upon the
seasonal nature of the demand.
• The Handloom Sector: It is a very well-developed sector and is mainly
dependent on the SHGs for the funds. It enjoys the market share of about 13
percent of the total cloth production in India.
• The Woollen Sector: India holds the position of seventh largest producer of
wool in the world. India also holds production of 1.8 percent share of the
world’s total wool.
• The Jute Sector: Jute, also known as the golden fibre in India is highly
produced in the eastern states of India like Assam. India enjoys the position of
the largest producer of jute in the world.
• The sericulture and the silk sector: India holds second position in the silk
production in the world, that is 18 percent of the world’s total silk. Some of

7
the mail silk produced in the company’s economy are mulberry, Eri, Tasar,
and Muga. It is a labour-intensive sector.

1.3 Online Shopping – An Overview

1.3.1 History of Consumer perception

Marketing was dominated by the so-called classical schools of thought which were highly
descriptive and relied heavily on case study approaches with only occasional use of
interview methods back in 1940s and 50s. At the end of the 1950s, two important reports
targeted marketing for its lack of methodological rigor, especially the failure to adopt
mathematicallyoriented behavioural science research methods.
In its early years, consumer behaviour was heavily guided by motivation research, which
had increased the understanding of customers, and had been largely used by consultants in
the advertising industry and also within the discipline of psychology in the 1920s, '30s
and '40s. By the 1950s, marketing began to adopt techniques utilised by motivation
researchers including depth interviews, projective techniques, thematic apperception tests
and a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods. More recently, scholars have
added up a new set of tools. Today, consumer behaviour also known as CB is regarded as
an important sub-discipline within marketing and is included as a unit of study in almost
all undergraduate marketing programs

REVIEW OF
LITERATURE

A literature review is an analysis of the existing research which is relevant to our topic, by
exhibiting how it relates to your investigation. It describes your investigation and justifies
29
how it may help to answer some of the questions or gaps in this area of research. A
literature review is not just a straightforward nutshell of everything we have read on the
topic and it is not a chronological description of what was discovered in our field.

NATIONAL REVIEW OF LITREATURE

Rajeev Kamineni (2004) in his study forsees that World Wide Web can change
Human behaviour and human connection networks to a very wide extent. Web
based shopping is one of the biggest examples to point out the trends in this path of
the study. This study is of a very wide nature and it focuses to establish the
differences between various web-based online shoppers from the varied parts of the
world. A number of important factors linked with online shopping behaviour have
been gone through. A cultural data set has been assembled and a description of the
shoppers has been given. As a conclusive step the crosscultural differences between
a number of shoppers were explored.

Archana Shrivastava, Ujwal Lanjewar, (2011) In online buying, the rate of spread
and selection of the online buying among the consumers is still relatively slow-going
in India. In view of the above problem, a factual study of online buying perception
was made. Based on literature review, four dominant mental factors- attitude,
motivation, personality and trust were considered with respect to the context of
online buying. The online buying decision; process models based on all the four
factors were designed after a statistical analysis. These models were attached with
business IQ, knowledge and data collection which design the Behaviour integrated
business Intelligence framework with a collaborated view of the online buyer
behaviour. In a nutshell, this chapter would provide the academic researches along
with the reviews and related ideas expressed in the literature that are accompained
with this subject. Also, several factors will be checked to answer the research
questions which are mentioned above already. The recent research shows that
internet shopping becomes a widely growing and an effective business model (Black,
2005), therefore, there are number of studies that are more or less related to the
online shopping and the customer behaviour. In this chapter, several point of views
will be taken out of the literatures, and require a careful review to achieve them as
the basis of the related research investigation.

J. SINHA 2010 The number of people working in various online activities is increasing
day by day. While the number of online shoppers is increasing, it is not into
proportion to that of the brick-and-mortar shoppers. Researchers have tried to
explain the growing performance of the online shopping as compared to the physical
shopping criteria. Factors affecting the lower level of Internet sales have been
proved as perceived risk in carrying out an online transaction, socio-psychological
factors (Like – peer pressure and relative pressure) and infrastructural limitations
(Availability of Internet, laptops, credit-cards, cyber laws etc.). Under preview of the
above mentioned factors, this study tried understanding the online shopping
behaviour of Indian consumers. Socio-psychological factors and infrastructure have
found influencing factors while the perceived risk surprisingly is not as important as a
whole but at general level there was a significant variation between the online
behavior of male and female due to risk perception.

Lal studied the factors of acquisition of Information Technology (IT) in India. The
study was based on 59 electrical and electronic goods manufacturing industries and
firms in NOIDA. Semi-structured questionnaires were utilised to collect the data.
The study looked on the factors influencing the degree of IT adoption by firms. The
factors comprise entrepreneur characteristics investigated by entrepreneur’s
qualification, special importance given to the market share, Research &
Development and quality carefulness, firm’s international orientation factors
measured by the trade force, work force skill and firm size. The sample firms were
split into four categories depending on their intensity of IT.

INTERNATIONAL REVIEW OF LITREATURE

E-Business was probably started with electronic data exchange in the 1960s (Zwass,
1996).
However, (Melao, 2008) forsees that it was only in the 1990s, primarily through the
Internet, that e-Business has come up as a basic feature of many organizations. In his
idea, e-Business would bring a vast revolution to the ways in which organizations
interact with customers, employees, suppliers and partners. Some saw e- Business as
a part of the theory to stay competitive in the global economy.

Christy M. K. Cheung, Lei Zhu, Timothy Kwong, Gloria W.W. Chan, Moez Limayem,
(2002) The topic of online consumer behaviour has come up under various contexts
over the years. Though researchers from a number of business disciplines have made
remarkable progress in the past few years, the scope of these studies is rather wide,
the studies appear relatively rejected and no theoretical model is found in this
research area. They provide a review of the literature and propose a researched
work with three key building blocks (intention, adoption, and continuance) so as to
check the online consumer behaviour in a structured manner. This proposed
framework not only gives us a collective view of online consumer behaviour, but also
provides as a major guideline for researchers in this area.

Burke, R.R. (2002), forsees that, Trust is a basic and foremost factor that determines
the success of Business to Consumer (B2C) transactions. The researchers have
recognised a number of critical factors that influence trust in the context of online
shopping. This research focuses on available safety measures which guarantee online
31
shopper’s safety and huge sale promotions and online deals which make the
customers shop online.

Abel Stephen (2003) in his paper envisages the findings of research studies that
show the ecommerce design and associated customer behaviour. The specialization
of e-commerce has impacted not only the marketplace by the facilitation of the
exchange of goods and services, but also human behaviour in accordance to the
mechanisms of online services. Researchers have identified relevant subject matters
ranging from internet usability, marketing channels and other factors impacting
online buying behaviour. Although researchers have focused on different faces of
online buying behaviour, their studies may seem to be interrelated and
interdependent.

The basic consumer purchasing decision-making theory can be identified as a

continuously excelling activity from routine problem-solving behaviours, through
limited problem- solving behaviours and then towards extensive problem-solving
behaviours.

The ancient structure for analysis of the buyer decision process is a five-step model.
According to the model, the consumer progresses initially from a state of felt lacking
that is problem realization, to the search for information on problem answers. The
information so collected provides the basis for the evaluation of alternatives. Finally,
after-purchase behaviour is difficult in the marketing perspective, as it eventually
impacts the consumers’ perception of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the product
or service.

This classic five stage model comprises of the importance of consumer behaviour
under most contexts. Not to forget, the management of marketing affairs at every
stage in the virtual environment has to be resolved by individual E-marketers.
Peterson et al. [1997] stated that it is an initial stage in the Internet development in
terms of building a suitable dedicated model of consumer buying behaviour.
Decision sequences will be distinguished by the starting point of the consumer, the
relevant market structures and the qualities of the product in question. Consumer
attitude towards online shopping is an influential factor affecting actual buying
behaviour.

Today [1997] showed a model of attitudes and shopping intention in respect to

Internet shopping in general. The model comprises of a number of factors coming
from the four major categories; the value of the product, the shopping experience,
the quality type of the service offered by the website and the risk perceptions of
Internet retail shopping. According to the research conducted by Vellido Etal. [2000],
nine factors associated with user perception of online shopping were found out.
Among them, the risk perception of users was defined to be the main discriminator
between people buying online and offline. Other varying factors were; convenience
of the shopping process, affordability of the merchandise and ease of using various
shopping sites. In another study, Jarvenpaa et al. [2000] verified a model of
consumer attitude towards specific web-based stores, in which perceptions of the
store reputation and size were assumed to impact the consumer trust on the
retailer. The level of trust was directly related to the attitude towards the store, and
inversely related to the perception of the risks involved in buying from that store.
J/arvenpaa et al. [2000] in the studies concluded that the buying behaviour and the
risk perception greatly impacted the consumer intention to buy from the store.

Consumer risk perceptions and concerns in respect to online shopping are greatly
related to factors involving the privacy and security of self-information, the security
of online transaction systems and the uncertainty of product quality. Trust is a result
of risk [McAllister, 1995]. One of the results of trust is that it reduces the consumer’s
level of risk associated with opportunistic behaviour by the seller [Ganesan, 1994].
Absence of trust is continuously reported as the reason for consumers not
purchasing from Internet shops, as trust is said to be as an essential factor under
conditions of uncertainty and risk in traditional theories.

33
Mayer et al. [1995] introduced a model which completely defines the traditional
marketing philosophy on consumer motivation to purchase and the trust model. In
this model, trust level; which is a personality quality possessed by buyers; is an
essential element after factor of trust. In web-shopping, there is limited information
available to the buyer regarding the seller before the purchase. A buyer with a high
level of the trust will more likely to be a potential customer than a buyer with a
lower propensity.

Buying decisions are ultimately guided by consumers perceptions of the product or

service. Of course, the basic nature of perceptions in relation to purchase habits has
been repeatedly demonstrated in advertising and marketing research. If the goal is
to increase online spending among consumers, particularly female consumers, then
consumers perceptions of online shopping matters the most. Basically, the more
positively consumers perceive the online purchasing experience the more likely they
will make them. The basic construct that we believe is tolerating the perceptual
differences between male and female internet shoppers is a feeling or may be called
as EMOTION. Relatively, there are two additional constructs, trust and convenience.
Chapter-3
Research
Methodology

35
3.0:- Research Methodology

Another essential part related to any research proposal is the selection of research
design, methods of data collection, sample size etc. These decisions are difficult to
make. Here basically, research methodology means steps or process that are
followed for finding out the best solution related to specific research problems.
Steps that are generally followed in order to conduct any research work are
described below-

a. It’s all about finding the research problem. In order to identify a research
problem, various articles and journals have to be studied by the researcher.
b. After studying a range of articles and journals in a specific area, it leads to
formation of research gap.
c. After finding out the research gap, next is to settle on the objectives related
to the study.
d. Then make decisions regarding the research design, methods of data
collection, sample size etc
e. In addition, data is collected either from primary or secondary sources
depending upon the time availability
f. Then data collected is analyzed properly in order to reach to a conclusion.

3.1 Research Problem

The problem for the current study is “consumer perception about online shopping from
textile shades”

3.2 Research Design

As you know, a research is taken out to achieve some specific objectives or purpose.
There are several research questions in the study and a study is done in order to
explore answers of all these questions. According to our problem, there are number
of research designs that can be utilised in the study.

b. Exploratory Research

In this type of research design, research is conducted in taken out to explore the
research problem. In this, researcher is generally having a broad idea in his mind and
by performing literature review, it becomes easy to identify a research problem.

B. Descriptive Research

In descriptive research, the problem is already in the account of the researcher. Here
research is taken out to find solutions for solving the problems regarding the
research.

In this particular study, descriptive research design is considered to be an appropriate

research design as the problem is already identified by the researcher and a research is
carried out to find solutions to this research problem. As once the research problem of
the present study is in the vision of the researcher, so, the descriptive research design
is used in this particular study in order to achieve the objectives in an effective
manner.

The Research Design Include-

• Sample design: Initially when the process of data collection began, I started a
detailed yet specific description about the target group which was the
employees of various reputed organizations. Clear guidelines on the preview of
the mindset of people to be monitored were drafted to precisely capture the
behavior and attitude of the employees of such organizations in accordance
with satisfaction of their job respectively and finalized a figure of 100 as the
sample size.

• Questionnaire: A question was formalised which later got short listed to form
the final draft. Utmost care was taken to ensure that the questionnaire so
prepared was limited to 2 pages only for the convenience of the target
respondents. The language used was simple & easily understandable by
common man. All the questions were close ended to get clear & consistent
37
result. The questionnaire began with simple questions about several factors that
influence the contentment and satisfaction of the employees including both
those affect favourably and those who don’t.

• Personal interviewing: The research was designed in such a way that it gave
clarity to people about the questions asked and granted me the liberty to
analyse & document the observations according to the behavior of the
respondents.

• Internet studies: It refers to the data collection from the secondary sources.
Before the process of data collection is started, the team searches for the facts
through internet.

3.3 Objective of the Study

Various objectives of the present study are-
a) To ascertain the satisfaction level of employees at Textile Shades.
b) To analyse the benefits provided by Textile Shades to the employees.
c) To know the opinion of employees about the working environment at Textile
Shades.
d) To offer suggestions to improve the satisfaction level of employees at Textile
Shades.

3.4 Justification of the Study

The study is important as it helps to find out the needs of the employees in the
organization and the things that satisfy the employees. HR management plays a very
essential role in today’s business firms.
It is a very challenging part of Business Management. Proper programs and skill
analysis of workers is very important for every organization in today’s Competitive
Business Environment. In modern era, it is essential to have multi skilled employees
so that productivity can be increased and at the same time help the organization to
satisfy the employees in all manners. The study helps to develop the needs and
requirement which are essential for employees to perform several jobs in good
manner in the organization. The study explains several welfare facilities provided to
employees.
welfare needs are identified on the basis of skills possessed by the employees. This
study helps to implement the welfare programs in accordance to the needs of the
employees. Therefore, the study becomes relevant to understand the employee
welfare.
3.5 Sampling process and methods
Sampling process refers to the process followed by researcher to select samples
from the universe. While selecting the sample, one important thing that needs to be
considered is that the sample so chosen should represent the entire population.
After deciding about the steps to be followed in selection of the sample, next
important thing to decide in the proposed study is selecting the appropriate
sampling methods. There are two important sampling methods- probability and non-
probability sampling methods.

Probability sampling no biasness in choosing the sample. It means every respondent

gets equal and fair opportunity for their selection. On the other side, non-probability
sampling includes all those methods through which sample can be chosen by
researcher by using their own experience.

In the present study, simple random sampling is used for the purpose of selecting
the appropriate samples and the information thus collected from these samples is
useful in reaching a final conclusion. Simple random sampling refers to selecting a
unit from the population randomly without any biasness. A Sample of 100
employees are taken in order to know about their opinion.

As there is no biasness in selecting the sample, chances of getting reliable & accurate
information increases. If information so collected is reliable, then the results of the
study are also reliable and it also becomes possible to achieve the objectives of the
study in better way.

3.6 Data Collection

The two main methods of collecting data are

1. Primary data

2. Secondary data

39
Primary Data: The primary data are those, which are collected for the very first time
hence, they are fresh and thus, happen to be original in character. Such data are
published by the authority who themselves are responsible for their collection.

Hence the Primary data used was as follows:-

• Questionnaires.
• Personal observations.
Secondary Data: The secondary data are those, whose records have already been
collected by organisation and processed. Secondary data are information which has
already been collected by respective section/unit/departments of an organisation to
satisfy its own need but it is being used by the management under references for an
entirely optimistic reason. The data was collected through survey and books, reports,
newspapers and internet etc., and the survey was conducted among the employees.
The data collected by the researcher are tabulated and analysed in such a way to
make interpretations.

3.7 Tools Used in Analysis

1. Statistical tool: chi square.

2. Graphical tools: Graph, Tables.

1. Chi square test: Chi-square test is used when the set of observed frequencies
obtained from the experimentation needs to be supported by hypothesis or theory.
The test is known as X2- test of goodness of fit and is used to know if the deviation
between observation (experiment) and theory may be attributed to chance
(fluctuations of sampling).

• Here we have the assumption as H0 and H1. If the values come in accordance with
the depicted values then the hypothesis is accepted, otherwise it’s rejected

3.8 Limitation of the Study

Every survey has some sort of limitations and this survey also have some:
Time Constraint
The major limitation of the study was time constraint as only few days were there for
the study. Lack of information
Another limitation was, that only limited information was made available from the
organization.
Small Sample Size:

Sample size was very small and a sample of only 100 employees was taken which
counted to another limitation.

Lack of knowledge:

Proper information and knowledge are the basis of any research but there was lack
of information and knowledge. Employees were reluctant in providing the
information.

5.1 Suggestions

The following suggestions or recommendations can be cited as a conclusion to the

project report.

1. Job autonomy
The first suggestion would be to give the employees sense of freedom in their
regular course of his/her job so as to ensure their participation in decision making
65
and management which would further help in boosting their morale and generate
job satisfaction.

2. Challenging jobs

The content of an individual’s job has to be made more challenging; if this is not the
case, then jobs would rather seem repetitive and burdening to be performed in the
same wavelength all the time.

3. Job rotation
The Company can also try changing the profile of the worker for some days by using
a job rotation strategy, by which he would be given an opportunity to experience
different kinds of jobs apart from their usual one.

4. Promotional opportunities
The careers of the employees in the organizations should be modified so as to
include a fast pace in their career slope and include more rewarding jobs.

5. Training
Amount of discomfort experienced by an individual in his work can be taken care of
by making use of appropriate training methodologies. If this is not the case, then
employees may feel isolated from their work and may result to job dissatisfaction

Other Suggestions to reduce the impact of overall job dissatisfaction

Efforts have to be made to make sure that employees are engaged in work.
Flexible work arrangements, possibly including telecommuting
Training and other professional growth opportunities
Interesting work that offers variety and challenge and allows the worker
opportunities to "put his or her signature" on the finished product
Opportunities to use one's talents and to be creative
Opportunities to take responsibility and direct one's own work
A stable, secure work environment that includes job
security/continuity Up-to-date technology has to be
maintained.

5.2 Conclusion

From the above study on “consumer perception towards online shopping” at Textile
Shades, the following conclusions have been drawn out:

1. In almost cases, the organizational factors have had little impact on the
overall job satisfaction (we can also say that the organizational factors have
caused little dissatisfaction in the individuals)
2. Job satisfaction of respondents is high in terms of pay, cohesion in work
groups, coordination among other departments and the like.
3. Job satisfaction is also high as far as the interpersonal relationships in the
organization are concerned.
4. Personal factors have a more impact on the overall job satisfaction of the
respondents.
5. Textile Shades needs to incorporate and implement certain important
probabilities in the areas of feedback, establishing sound human resource
policies etc.
