Phobias are extreme, irrational fears that are much stronger than normal fears. There are two main types of phobias: specific phobias which are fears of specific objects like dogs, and situational phobias which are fears of situations like public speaking. Phobias can be learned through direct experiences like being attacked by a dog, or indirectly by observing others' fearful reactions. Common phobias are named after their object or situation using Greek or Latin roots. Treatments for phobias aim to gradually expose patients to their feared object through behavior changes or help address underlying psychological issues fueling the phobia.
