1 C Am7 Dm7 G7 F C
2 C Em7 Am7 Dm11 G7 G7
3 C F F Em7 Am7 Dm7
4 G7 C F Dm7 G7 C C

Notice how substituting Line 2 Bar 2 with Em7 makes it

possible for us to change the whole progression in Line 2:

Line 2: Bar 2 Em7

The melody tone is G.
Can substitute Em7 for C.

Line 2: Bar 3 Am7

Originally we had a C here.
Since Bar 2 Em7 can be inserted,
we can follow the Circle of 5ths to
substitute the next chord as Am7
The melody tone A fits perfectly.

Next question: Can we then change the

next chord in the next bar to Dm?
(Because we don’t want to have 2 Dm
chords in a row.)

Line 2: Bar 4 Dm11

The melody tone G makes this Dm11.

Line 2: Bar 5 G7

The G7 here is right at the end of

musical phrase so it fits perfectly.

Tip: Beautiful chord progression:

C Em7 Am7 Dm7 G7
Follows the Circle of 5ths

Line 2: Bar 6 G7
We can choose to do some turnaround
in this empty measure to lead to the
next music phrase B.

Line 3: Bar 4 Em7

Melody tone is G therefore can sub Em7
for C.

Tip: Beautiful chord progression that

follows to Line 4: Em7 Am7 Dm7 G7
Follows the Circle of 5ths

Look what happened – we managed to put in 2

chord progressions using the Circle of 5ths
starting with Em7. Isn’t this great?

We started off with simple basic chords like this:

1 C C G7 G7 F C
2 C C C G7 G7 G7
3 C F F C C G7
4 G7 C F G7 C C

3 Steps in Level 4 brought us to the following chord

progression:

1 C Am7 Dm7 G7 F C
2 C Em7 Am7 Dm11 G7 G7
3 C F F Em7 Am7 Dm7
4 G7 C F Dm7 G7 C C

Compare the 2 chord diagrams. We are only at Level 4

putting in minor chord substitutions, and already the
arrangement of “Morning Has Broken” is dressed up with
beautiful bass lines moving in 5ths following the Circle
movement.

Tip: Normally when we do chord substitutions,

start working from G7 backwards with the substitutions
but in this song, we found a Circle of 5ths progression
in Line 2 from Em7. When you become good at this,
you can work either backwards or forward. Working
backwards is much easier. And in this song, I show
you how you can work from Em7 instead of from G7.
Both directions work as you get better at this.

Step 4: Combine Level 3 with Level 4

Level 3: Minor Chord Substitution

1 C Am Dm G7 F C
2 C Em Am G7 Dm G7
3 C F F C Am Dm
4 G7 C Dm G7 C C

Level 4: Minor Chord Substitution

1 C Am7 Dm7 G7 F C
2 C Em7 Am7 Dm11 G7 G7
3 C F F Em7 Am7 Dm7
4 G7 C F Dm7 G7 C C

Combining both Levels:

1 C Am7 Dm7 G7 F C
2 C Em7 Am7 Dm11 G7 G7
3 C F F Em7 Am7 Dm7
4 G7 C Dm G7 C C
