The course objectives are for students to know the nature of sin and how to arrest it, understand holiness's place in their walk with God, understand the demands of walking in holiness, and know the benefits of holy living.

Some hindrances to a life of holiness mentioned are lack of depth in God's word, wrong location, wrong company, pride, disobedience, lack of wisdom, and ignorance of the devil's traps in the last days.

INTRODUCTION
DEFINITIONS

DYNAMICS - Is a force that produces change.

- It is an active or a driving force.

HOLINESS - Is not who we are; it is who God is.

Holiness is the character of God.

Dynamics of Holiness is the divine force that produces in us the character of

God, which is Holiness. It is also the supernatural force (from the Holy
Spirit) which sanctifies us and consecrates us to God.

This end time is a two-sided coin. On one side is darkness, blackness and
gloom for the world. Joel 2:1-3; Mal. 4:1. On the other side is glory,
flourishing and abundance for the Church - Mal. 4:2

There is a blessing for the one who returns and repent Joel 2:13-14

The Holiness we are seeking goes much deeper than just clearing the outside
of our cup. Lk. 11:39. We are seeking the Living God, for true holiness
does not come from following rules, but it comes from following Christ.

THE FOUNDATION FOR A GENUINE WALK WITH GOD

With the following scriptures:

If the foundation be destroyed what can the righteous do. Ps. 11:3

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the
Lord knoweth them that are His. And, let everyone that nameth the name
of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Tim. 2:19

Follow peace with all men, and holiness without which no man shall see
the Lord. Heb. 12:14

5
It is clear that Holiness is the foundation of for a genuine relationship with
God and also a fulfilling walk with Him. Outside of Holiness God cannot be
pleased. And until a man’s way pleases the Lord, he remains a prey to his
enemies. Prov. 16:7

WHAT HOLINESS IS?

Sanctification is the way to Holiness. Holiness is double sanctification.
Without Holiness, you cannot see God (Heb. 12:14)
It is the way to untold glory (Eph. 5:27)

Sanctification means to be set apart for God, and therefore to be set apart
from the devil.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SANCTIFICATION:

SANCTIFICATION IS A MUST, FOR IT IS A COMMAND - Matt. 5:48; I
Pet. 1:15-16

IT MUST REMAIN A STRONG DESIRE FOR IT TO BE SUSTAINED -

Ps. 27:4; Ps. 42:1-2

IT BIRTHS JOY, BOLDNESS AND DIVINE SECURITY.

Availability of absolute divine security. When you have nothing to hide,
you will begin to know what is called security - Jn. 3:20-21

UNDERSTANDING HOLINESS
HOLINESS AND CONSISTENCY
The word Holy is found in the Bible - 596 times
The word Holiness is found in the Bible - 43 times
The word Sanctification is found in the Bible - 136 times

In the last book of the Old Testament, we have these words: “For I am the
Lord, I change not …” Mal. 3:6. Also, in the New Testament, we read;
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever” (Heb. 13:8).The
emphasis given to the subject of holiness in the scriptures is a prove of its
importance to the race of life. Every believer is expected to have a consistent
walk in holiness.

HUMILITY COMES BEFORE HOLINESS

A Holy man is a humble man - Matt. 11:29. Holiness is the product of
grace, and God gives grace only to the humble.
6
Jesus did not condemn sinners, but hypocrites. A hypocrite is therefore one
who refuses to admit that, he is double-faced, thereby pretending a
righteousness that he fails to live.

Humility brings grace to our need, and grace alone can change our hearts.
Humility therefore, is the substructure of transformation.

HOLINESS COMES FROM SEEKING THE GLORY OF GOD.

Ps. 34:4-5, Jn. 5:44
This simply means living for him and not for things. This takes you to a
level where the degree to which you open up to him is so great that no room
is left for unrighteousness to be considered - Jn. 7:18b

As we truly find God, the things which are so highly esteemed among men
will become detestable in our sight - Lk. 16:15

HOLINESS GRANTS YOU ACCESS TO THE HEART OF GOD AND

GOD INTO KNOWING OUR HEARTS.
If you would actually do His will, you must truly know His heart.
And your heart will be pure and open to God. It is the pure heart who will
receive God - Ps. 24:3-4, Ps. 15:1-5

THE HIGHWAY OF HOLINESS - Is. 35:8-10

A Holy life is a life alive with love, compelled of love, and filled with love.
God’s love is not just forgiving, it is for living. Our joy and love should
grow from being a commandment to becoming an adventure.

THE RADIANCE OF HOLINESS

The Book of Psalms tells us that God covers Himself “with light as with a
garment” Ps. 104:2 The Apostle declares “God is light” - I Jn. 1:5 James
refers to the Father as “The Father of Lights” - James 1:17. We are the
light of the world - Matt. 5:14. A walk in holiness keeps you radiant,
shinning and you become an attraction.

HOLINESS IS A BODY FULL OF LIGHT - LK. 11:34-36; Phil. 2:14-15;

Eph. 5:11, 13

LESSON TWO

THE NATURE OF SIN

Sin is outright rebellion against God’s law (I Jn. 3:4 amplified)

“Everyone who commits (practices) sin is guilty of lawlessness; for (that is
what) sin is, law by transgression or neglect - being unrestrained and
unregulated by His commands and (His will). - I Jn. 3:4 (Amplified
version)

All unrighteousness is sin. Whatever is not right (according to God’s

standard) is wrong. (I Jn. 5:17)

Sin is at the root of all evil, because without sin there was no evil (Rm. 5:12)

Sin is omission of known duty (James 4:17)

THREE DIMENSIONAL NATURE OF SIN

 It is deceptive - Heb. 3:13

 It offers temporal pleasure - Heb. 11:25

 It is destructive - Prov. 11:3

THREE MAIN CATEGORIES OF SIN

From I Jn. 2:15-17, we see three main categories into which the sins that
easily beset Christians can be divided.

LUST OF THE EYES - This is covetousness, which is defined by Strong’s

Bible concordance as “an insatiable desire for worldly gain” It is described
as idolatry (Col. 3:5), it can never be satisfied (Hab. 2:9)
EXAMPLES: Achan (Joshua 7:21); Gehazi (II Kgs. 5:20); Jude (Matt.
26:14-15)

Elisha saw Elijah taken up, he received double of his unction. Gehazi was to
be next but he missed it to covetousness.

Apostles saw our Elijah (Jesus) being taken up, we are the ones to take over
from them. So, we are as it were, the Gehazi generation, we will make it.
8
LUST OF THE FLESH - This is immorality. I Tim. 4:1. Samson was a
picture of Israel’s strength, but he was slain on the laps of immorality (Jud.
16:1) Immorality paralyses sound mentality (The gland in the brain that is
responsible for the intellect of man is also responsible for sexual desires. If
you overtake it to satisfy sexual appetite, it affects intelligence). The Spirit
of seduction sears your conscience.

THE PRIDE OF LIFE - Looking through II Tim. 3:1-4, it can be observed

that 50% of the qualities listed above have to do mainly with the pride of
life. Such as; boasters, blasphemers, disobedience to parents,
unthankfulness, despisers of those that are good, heady, high-mindedness.

Pride is an iniquity, a nature of the devil - Isa. 14:12-16 .God resists the
proud - I Pet. 5:5-6

To cure pride or to free yourself from pride, acknowledge God as the doer of
every accomplishment in your life. Ps. 127:1-3; I Sam. 2:9; Ps. 115:1

THE PRIDE OF LIFE GIVES BIRTH TO:

A.REBELLION - II Cor. 4:7

This is an active opposition to authority. It is a deliberate reaction against
order, targeted at leadership at all levels. Rebellion is an issue of the heart.
Rebellion is a curse. It is the sin of witchcraft (I Sam 15:23)
EXAMPLE: - ABSALOM (II Sam. 15:1-2)
EVE (Gen. 3:1-7)

B.OFFENCE
Jesus made it clear that it is impossible to live in this world without being
offended. It is therefore our responses to offence that determine our future.
Jesus said, “And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” Lk.
7:23; Mat. 11:6

LECTURE TWO
LESSON THREE

REVELATION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

Righteousness means the ability to stand in the presence of the Father God
without the sense of guilt or inferiority.

Righteousness is the life and nature of God. Consequently, the man who has
received the nature of God has automatically become the righteousness of
God in Christ. II Cor. 5:21

The instance man knows that he is the righteousness of God in Christ and
knows what that righteousness means, Satan is defeated.

Our righteousness is not because we have done something to deserve it; it is

because God has chosen not to hold sin against us.

RIGHTEOUSNESS CONSCIOUSNESS
This is the awareness of having right-standing with God. It is the Holy
Spirit that helps build a righteousness consciousness through meditation in
the word of God.

THE TRIUMPH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

It is the Will of God for us, as the righteousness of God in Christ, to reign as
Kings in life through Jesus Christ. II Cor. 5:21; Rom. 5:17

THREE WAYS JESUS TRIUMPHED OVER SATAN

A. During His earthly ministry - Jn. 14:30; Jn. 10:17-18
B. Through the Cross - Heb. 2:14
C. New Creation - When a man receives Jesus as his Lord and Saviour at
New birth, satan’s spiritual hold on that man is totally broken. (Col. 1:13)

10
EFFECTS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

THE FRUIT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS - II Cor. 9:10 says “… and increase

the fruits of your righteousness.”

WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS - Eph. 2:10 says “for we are His

workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for good works, which God afore
prepared that we should walk in them.” Isa. 32:17

CROWN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS - 2 Tim. 4:8

CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

SICKNESS - There was no sickness until sin came. Prov. 14:30;

Num. 25:1-8

SHAME - Gen. 3:10; Gen. 2:25; Prov. 14:34

POVERTY - Prov. 28:13; Gen. 3:17-19

LACK OF PEACE - Jn. 16:26-27; Jn. 14:27; 2 Chron. 15:3,5-6; II

Chron. 15:8-9, 12,15,19

DESTRUCTION - The end result of sin is destruction. 1 Cor.

15:56; Eze. 18:20

EFFECTS OF SIN CONSCIOUSNESS

 Causes failure
 Destroys faith
 Destroys initiative in the heart
 Gives inferiority complex
 Theologians recognize it as responsible for all human religion

11
LESSON FOUR

ARRESTING SIN

NEW BIRTH
New birth is repenting of sin and living in newness of life in Christ. 2 Cor.
5:17, II Pet. 1:4, Col. 1:13

WILL POWER
Your will is a force of deliverance, a force of liberty. The will is a God-
given force able to determine your habits and choices. What you want is a
desire. Lazarus - Lk. 16:20; Acts 3:1-9; Joseph - Gen. 39:9; Daniel - 6:16-
22; Deut. 30:9

THINK AND ACT - The prodigal son - Lk. 15:17-20; Haggai 1:5; I Cor.
9:26-27

THE WORD - II Thess. 2:7-8; Eph. 5:26; Jn. 17:17; Ps. 119:130

THE BLOOD - Zech. 9:11-12; Col. 2:9

THE NAME - Jesus was tempted, but did not sin. Heb. 4:15; Matt. 1:21;
Phil. 2:10; Prov. 18:10

THE HOLY SPIRIT - Rm. 8:1-13, 26; Zech. 4:6

AN OATH
An oath is a solemn promise. It means the same as a vow which is defined
as a solemn decision to do something or to stop doing a particular thing,
which is binding. Satan has vowed to bring you down, to help preserve you
from his trap, you may have to vow once in while. - Prov. 7:13-15; I Cor.
9:16

EXAMPLE - Job in Job 31:1-10 (vow against immorality)

Job 31:24-28 (vow against money)

12
LESSON FIVE

SUSTAINING HOLINESS

1. IT IS A COMMAND: I Pet. 1:15-16; Exo. 28:36

2. CONQUER ‘SELF’: Phil. 3:8

2. WALK IN INTEGRITY: I Thess. 2:10; II Tim 2:20-22

3. PUT MONEY IN IT’S PLACE: I Tim. 6:10; Matt. 6:24; Exo. 32:4-35

How to Put Money in It’s Place

a. Be contented - I Tim. 6:6-10
b. Be a giver - Prov. 3:9-10
c. Be faithful - Ps. 101:7; Luke 16: 10-11
d. Avoid debt - Prov. 22:7
e. Watch the company you keep - Prov. 13:20

13
LECTURE THREE
LESSON SIX

THE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS

The pursuit of holiness is task and is highly demanding. Phil.2:12-16. It must
be approached with all sense of responsibility, giving no place to the devil to
operate. Eph 4:27. The devil is deceitful and subtle, so, the saint must be
smarter and violently uphold scriptural commands that guarantee victory
over the wiles of the devil.

WHAT TO DO IN PURSUIT OF HOLINESS

a. Fight the battle for holiness - Rm. 7:21-24.
There is a war constantly going on i.e. wanting to do good and evil trying to
have its way in our members. The war must be fought and constantly won.
How? Ps. 119:9-11

b. Ensure holiness in the body - I Cor. 9:27.

It is true that you are a spirit but you live in the body. Whatever the body is
subjected to will also affect the spirit. So the body must be put under control.

c. Ensure holiness in spirit - II Cor. 7:1

The spirit is the real man and must be kept free of all filthiness. Must be in
constant fellowship with the spirit of God and engaging in spiritually
exercise.

d. Holiness and our will - Phil. 2:13

Our will has a lot to do with our actions. To live and act in holiness, we must
open up to God and subscribe to his will alone.

f. Form a Habits of holiness - Rm. 6:19

The more we sin, the more we are inclined to sin. The more we live holy the
more we develop a lifestyle of holiness.

John Owen said, “Repeated acts of the consent of the will unto sin may
beget a disposition and undeniableness of the will unto a proveness and
readiness to consent unto sin upon easy solicitation.”
Every sin we commit reinforces the habit of sinning and makes it easier to
sin.

14
LESSON SEVEN

THE BENEFITS OF HOLY LIVING

The benefits that accrue to holy living are innumerable. Apart from other
attendant benefits, you are instantly guaranteed a completely new and
fulfilled life in Jesus; also you enjoy God’s presence continually.

While the wages of sin is death, the wage of holiness is life more
abundantly. Sin brings a curse and holiness blessings and eternal life. Rom.
6:23, Ps. 112:1-3.

Here are some other rewards of holiness:

1. Prosperity, Promotion and Honor. Ps. 92:10-14, Prov. 14:34,
Job 1:1-3
2. Sound mind Wisdom):
Joseph -Gen.39:9; 41:38, 41-44.
Daniel -Dan. 1:8; 2:23, 46-48
3. Beauty. Ps. 110:3;149:4
4. Rejoice at Persecutions. 2Tim.3:12
5. Divine Backing and Deliverance.
The Three Hebrew Boys – Dan. 3:13-28
Daniel. – Dan. 6:10-24.

15
LESSON EIGHT

THE SECRET OF A LASTING WALK IN HOLINESS

Whatever will sustain a genuine walk with God will bring about a lasting
walk in holiness. The following are the lifelines for a sustained walk in
holiness:

THE FEAR OF GOD Deut. 6:13-14

The fear of God is the spiritual device that empowers or enables a
Christian to judge his actions before it is carried out. He will ask himself
is this good or acceptable to God, before it is put in to action.

For example, what Joseph said in Genesis 39:8-9; 42:18 displays the
depth of the fear of God resident in the heart of Joseph and how it
governed the operations of his life and led him into genuine walk in
holiness.

THE LOVE OF GOD Deut. 6:5-6, 17-18

The love of God is what restrains a child of God from doing anything
that will hurt God and his relationship with Him. The one whom you
love you will find difficult to offend. You do everything you can to
preserve the relationship between both of you.

“Love for God is not a gift it is a choice you make” - Bishop David
Oyedepo

ABSOLUTE TRUST IN GOD Ps. 125:1

Trust in God will makes you remain unmovable, the pressure and
temptation to sin notwithstanding.

The account of Daniel and the three Hebrew Boys is a proof of the
dimension of strength absolute trust in God makes available, in a
believers quest to refuse sin and maintain a holy walk with God.
Daniel 1:8; 3:13-18, 23-30.

16
LESSON NINE

HINDRANCES TO A LIFE OF HOLINESS

1. Lack of Depth in Gods Word.

It was the depth Jesus had in the word that delivered him from the
tempter. He was able to maintain a live and walk in it. Mat. 4:1-4.
By his depth in the word, he overcame the lust of the flesh, the lust of the
eyes and pride of life.

2. Wrong Location. 2Sam.11:1-17

At the time when Kings ought to be in the battle field King David stayed
back at home, though it is his legal house but at that time was a wrong
location to be. He saw the wrong thing and committed adultery, operated
falsehood, and ended up a murderer.

3. Wrong Company - 1 Cor. 15:33; Prov. 13:20; 28:7

This is when your association with someone leads you to committing sin
or breaking God’s covenant. The association and interaction of Eve with
the serpent that was not in anyway at the same platform with her led to
the fall of the first family. Gen. 3:1-6

4. Pride
Pride results in many ways. When one is not easily correctible, it is pride
and in such a situation holy living becomes difficult because when he is
wrong cannot be corrected by God’s word. Pride also displays itself as an
over estimation of self, thinking at all times that you know what is good
for you, God’s opinion is never considered. This births rebellion. Saul is a
good example. 1 Sam. 15: 10-11, 17-23.

5. Disobedience
The Shepherd and the sheep relates on the basis of instructions. As long
as the sheep obeys the instructions of the shepherd their relationship
remains cordial and fruitful, otherwise the sheep will be found wanting.
The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want…Ps. 23:1
The Lord, the Chief Shepherd leads in the path of righteousness (Psalms
23: 3). Obeying his dictates unreservedly, automatically keeps us in the
path of holiness.

Saul disobeyed; he fell out of relationship with God and also lost his
kingdom. 1Sam 15:18-22
17
6. Lack of Wisdom Ps. 101:2-4; Mat.7:24-25
It takes wisdom to obey and operate by God’s Word at all times. Lack of it
results in unholiness. Whatever the challenge and level of temptation may
be, wisdom will help the saint maintain spiritual stability. Isaiah 33:6.
Anyone who continually abides by God’s will, will definitely walk in his
ways and invariable in holiness. David behaved himself wisely towards Saul
and was never found to offend God or Saul in all he did while serving Saul,
in spite of Saul’s mischief. 1Sam.18:5, 14-16

7. The Ignorance of the Last Days Trap Of the Devil. 2Tim. 3:1-9
Many believers who are ignorant of the level of spiritual lawlessness that
will pre-occupy many in the last days found themselves trapped by opening
up to such people who have been caught in the web. As the scriptures has
instructed, we should turn away from such. However, you must be aware of
how they operate and take relevant steps to do away with such people who
are creeping into the house of God. You must also ensure such traits are not
found in you too.
