Preventing intercultural and interpersonal conflicts

A. Introduction
Every region or country has a different culture. And of course this culture has
existed since ancient times, and from generation to generation to the present. As a
society that lives in cultural diversity, we need to understand the meaning of culture in
order to love our culture more. Factors that cause cultural differences can include
differences between races, differences between ethnic groups, and differences in
beliefs. Not only that, apart from differences in culture, we also have differences
between individuals. These interpersonal differences can be in the form of differences
of opinion, differences in the beliefs of each individual, differences in conveying
suggestions or ideas. Each of these differences will inevitably lead to problems or
conflicts. This conflict will arise when one of the two individuals has a difference in
belief and does not accept that difference. Then what conflicts will arise if one of the
two parties rejects the differences? And how to prevent conflict from a difference
between cultures and individuals. Here I will discuss these points from the
understanding of culture first, and what are the factors that can cause conflict between
intercultural and interpersonal differences, as well as how we can prevent these
conflicts.

B. Discussion
1. Definition of culture
The word culture is a language that comes from Sanskrit, namely
‘budhayah’ which is a plural form of buddhi which has the meaning of mind
or reason.
Many experts have their own definitions if they know about the
meaning of culture itself. We can make the understanding of culture
according to experts as a reference for many people who are interested in
learning more about this culture.

By knowing some of these cultural meanings, we also indirectly learn

how the experts have various thoughts about the culture that exists and
develops in our society.
According to J. Herskovits and Bronislaw Malinowski, argued that
everything that is in society is determined by the culture that is owned by the
community itself. The term for that opinion is Cultural-Determinism.

2. Intercultural and interpersonal differences that exist in society

Each region has a different culture. Here I will give examples of
cultural differences that exist in the surrounding community. The first is 1)
conflicts of interest between immigrants and local residents in transmigration
areas, to overcome this the government includes local residents in
development programs together with transmigrants, 2) population increase in
the supply of food, clothing and shelter needs. 3) floods, landslides, volcanic
eruptions, the community will be evacuated and moved to a new place, that's
where they must adapt to local environmental and cultural conditions so that a
process of assimilation and alkuturation occurs, 4) Differences between
religious communities, 5) develop processes and systems to promote
empowerment, justice, peace, forgiveness, reconciliation and recognition.
One example of other intercultural differences in society, that is the
cultural difference between Japan and Indonesia is a different way of
expressing gratitude, in Japan the way to express gratitude is by bowing one's
body, while in Indonesia it is enough to shake hands.

3. Conflict arising from the existence of intercultural and interpersonal

differences
Most of the violence and conflicts / crises that exist in the world today
can be traced back to the thought of Attitude (Cultural Violance) which is
represented through various things, for example hate speech, myths, legends
about war heroes, religious justification of war, discrimination based on race,
skin color, ethnicity, and others.
These problems can lead to political violence and conflicts between
cultures including Islamophobians side by side with extremism and terrorism.
Furthermore, there are various challenging issues from the patriarchal system
which manifest in gender discrimination, cultural conflicts and various other
forms of discrimination.

4. How to prevent conflicts between cultural and interpersonal differences

In overcoming conflict and building peace, scientists must emphasize
the ‘what’ and ‘how’ related to constructive and conceptual contributions
regarding peace and communication.
 Conflict Must Be Management Towards Reconciliation
Conflict is not something that everyone who lives in this world hopes
for. What’s more, conflicts that have nuances due to differences in
religion and ethnicity. Such a conflict is indeed a very serious
conflict. To reduce the dangerous face of the conflict, the conflict
must be managed so that it proceeds in a positive direction. Dr.
Judo Poerwowidagdo, MA. Senior Lecturers at Duta Wacana
University Yogyakarta stated that the conflict process towards a
positive direction is as follows: From a “fighting” condition, efforts
must be made to get to Flight. From the Flight condition, it is
attempted again in order to create a Flaw condition. From this Flaw,
then it is directed towards the conditions of the Agreement,
continuing to Reconciliation. Therefore, the community, especially
religious and ethnic leaders, must be equipped with Conflict
Management knowledge at least for the basic level.

 Changing the Religious Understanding System.

Conflict with religious nuances is not because the religion he adheres
to teaches conflict. Because the way people understand their
religious teachings is what causes them to be motivated to carry out
conflicts. The nobility of the teachings of each religion should not be
rhetorically excessively. Excessive rhetoric in teaching religion to
each other causes people to feel that they are superior to adherents of
other religions. Direct the formation of religious life to display
universal values from the teachings of the religion being held. For
example, all religions teach their followers to live patiently in facing
this life process. Become more resilient in facing various AGHT
(threats, disturbances, obstacles and challenges) in facing life.
Willing to sacrifice for the sake of a higher cause. It is not easy to
give up on fighting for something that is right and just. It is not easy
to get drunk or forget yourself when you are successful. People who
are successful are like being rich, smart, being a ruler, beautiful,
handsome, having some power, feeling themselves aristocratic. All
of this can cause people to become drunk if they are not vigilant
about carrying oneself. Things like that are really concerned more
by the people of our nation today.

 Reducing the Abandoning Appearance of Religious Life.

For religious activities such as the celebration of religious holidays,
people should reduce the form of celebration with a festive
appearance. It is also very easy to provoke conflict. Because other
people can also be provoked to show their existence that they also
adhere to a very great and noble religion.

C. Conclusion
From this explanation, it can be concluded that if each country or region has a
different culture, it all depends on how we react to it, even though we don’t follow
that culture, at least we respect or don’t hinder that culture. If there is a conflict that
has arisen, we must react to it calmly, with patience, not by discriminating against it
or vilifying it. As for the solution that can prevent intercultural conflict, scientists
must emphasize the ‘what’ and ‘how’ related to constructive and conceptual
contributions regarding peace and communication.
