Cloud Gaming

Games occupy an important place in our cultural consciousness. Nearly

everyone has played a game at some point in their lives. In fact gaming are
nowadays the most popular and profitable form of entertainment. The video
game industry is drastically different from what it was just a few years ago.
Last year, the gaming industry produced an estimated revenue of 116 dollars,
beating the TV services and the movie industry by far, In addition the gaming
industry is still growing as opposed to other entertainment services like TV
whose revenue fall by 8 percent.
It seems that the only constraint for gaming now is having necessary
components to live the experience. However, getting an efficient system
required to run recent games is actually expensive.
This has been an issue until the introduction of cloud gaming services in 2010
by Steve Perlman. What does cloud gaming mean? Why is cloud gaming
popular? And is cloud gaming the future?

Cloud gaming is a method of playing video games that is done using

remote hardware, typically taking the form of servers owned by a separate
company. Rather than downloading a game onto your system or installing it via
physical media and playing it locally, cloud gaming relies on internet streaming
to deliver games on your device of choice. This means that your console,
television, mobile phone, or computer is not relying on its own internal
hardware to run the games. As a result, games incapable of running locally on a
system can easily run via cloud gaming.
The remote server does all the heavy work, while your computer just receives
streaming video and sends input commands. Essentially, cloud gaming is like a
streaming video service, but interactive.
Cloud gaming requires a persistent internet connection in order to operate, as
none of the data is stored on the user system, instead the data is stored remotely.

Streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix, Twitch and many others are just
as popular than non streaming counterparts such as cable and broadcast
television(if not more popular). The phone that we carry in our pocket can a be
an instant portal to a wide collections of streaming content.
The reality is that until now, streaming technology just wasn’t good enough.
But now internet speeds are getting faster and more accessible to larger groups
of people and hardware is good enough to deliver high fidelity content. It’s
really like the perfect combination of features building up to finally offer cloud
gaming the place it deserves. As internet speeds continue to get better and
cheaper, so too will cloud gaming.
In theory cloud gaming has several advantages, the most important one is the
fact that players do not need an expensive hardware investments or upgrade. In
reality, instead of buying an expensive gaming hardware, we could just use the
existing hardware. We could also buy a cheap streaming box and controller that
plugs into television and home network. In addition, cloud gaming provides the
ability to play games designed for PC and console on your smartphone, it
allows games to become more platform independent . More over, Cloud gaming
permit to start playing games instantly, as the server already has the game
installed and can start playing it immediately, as some games require download
of 20GB 30GB or even more. Further more, players do not have to worry about
maintaining there systems or installing a whole pack of softwares in order to
run the game.
However, there are some significant hurdles to overcome, One of the foremost
threats to cloud gaming dominance is the simple limitations of the market. In
order to reap the benefits of cloud gaming, players must always have a stable
internet connection without any issue. Nevertheless, internet connection is not
available in some areas, with affordable price. If a network connection is lost
because of a storm or an outage, gamers could not play and the session progress
will be lost.
Even for experienced users with a broadband connection, the cloud gaming
service presents a secondary risk: data limits. If users receive high approval
rates just for playing games, it could kill the platform and similar services in the
cradle before technology ramps up to meet demand.
Games can react much faster to actions when run on a local computer. Reaction
time is faster when the movement of a mouse should simply reach your
computer than when it must travel through an Internet connection, process and
compress, and then return. Cloud gaming services will always have more
latency than powerful local hardware.

Input latency and visual lag can have a negative impact on the gamers
experience, especially for new cloud gaming platforms, if servers reside in
centralized cloud data centers that are located hundreds of miles away or more
from the user.
Many online gaming experiences, especially games with multiplayer
functionality, are highly interactive in nature. Multiplayer gaming demands
real-time response rates, which the cloud, despite its many advantages, cannot
provide solely on its own due to the geographical location of cloud data centers.
As a distributed computing topology, edge computing ensures users across the
globe can enjoy a high-quality gaming experience with minimal latency
regardless of where they are playing.
The combination of cloud and Edge computing also creates a more flexible
platform that provides gaming developers and publishers with the ability to
scale. At the same time, Edge computing allows gamers to move seamlessly
between different locations and varying devices.

Cloud Gaming has been around for a while, various companies have tried
implementing different gaming systems in the cloud in the last couple of years.
So far, none of them has managed to crack the code and deliver a high
performance cloud gaming platform.
In current implementations, lag and low latency, are only a couple of the issues
encountered. Even if the current platforms are usable, the video quality
streamed through those services can often be lacking.
Fortunately, Google, the company with some of the largest data centers in the
world, is entering this space. Google executives have announced their “Stadia”
project not long ago, with some bold and exciting promises.

Cloud gaming has experienced a lot of attention from people lately since
it can revolutionize gaming in the same way streaming services revolutionized
the movie industry.
The implementation of such a system is not going to be easy but, companies
with the right technological advantage will be able to prevail. Even if currently
cloud gaming is just a barely working concept, once the internet and streaming
quality issues are resolved, this technology could represent the future of
gaming.
