Impact of the Europeans on the indigenous peoples

Forced labour or systems of enslavement were introduced.

 Repartamiento system – a percentage of the indigenous male population between the ages of 18 and
60 were recruited to work for a Spaniard who desired their work, for a week or fortnight. However,
they were hardly ever paid.
 Encomienda system – smaller groups of indigenous people were allocated to a few privileged
Spaniards (known as encomenderos). The encomendero was granted a parcel of land, with the right to
exact tribute (usually in the form of labour or crops, or both) from the indigenous people living on the
land. In return he was expected to convert them to Christianity and protect them.
Genocide (that is, the wiping out of an entire ethnic or racial group) took place.
 The indigenous populations decreased considerably under Spanish rule until only minority groups
existed throughout the Caribbean region.

New types of diseases were introduced.

 Indigenous peoples were not immune to diseases such as smallpox and chicken pox.

Taino families were broken up.

 Adult males were moved from place to place by Spaniards. Many Kalinago males were killed in wars
with the Spaniards.

Indigenous agricultural systems were destroyed.

 The production of crops by indigenous peoples was affected. The Spanish brought animals such as
cattle, horses, sheep and goats, which trampled the fields. Often these animals were placed to graze on
the agricultural fields.

Infanticide was carried out.

 Many parents preferred to kill their babies because they did want them to grow up under such
conditions.

Taino women were sexually exploited.

Decline in the indigenous population - There was an increase in the mortality rate and a decrease in the
birth rate.

The indigenous peoples lost their land and their sovereignty. They were no longer in control of their own
affairs. They were ruled by the Spanish and did not have the freedom they were accustomed to before.

There were changes in indigenous religious practices due to the forced conversion to Christianity.
There was a breakdown of Amerindian culture as the Taino and Kalinago had to conform to European
way of life.
