INTRODUCTION
This session will take you on a world tour through house music from the ‘80s to today! Explore
deep house, EDM, tropical house, tribal house and more. Don't miss this wonderful experience
that will surely energize your class and thrill your students.
SESSION OBJECTIVE
Make a world tour through house music from the eighties to now.
• Explore new rhythms: deep house, disco house, Latin house, tribal house, electro and more...
• Learn some of the basic, simple and fun movements of the house dance and its variations
(arms, rhythmic, direction, fitness...).
• Work the feeling and attitude that should accompany this style of music and dancing.
• Energize your class and thrill your students... and HAVING FUN
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
“HOUSE MUSIC”
House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s.
House music quickly spread to other American cities like Detroit, New York City, and Newark. In
the mid-to- late 1980s, house music become popular in Europe, South Africa, and Australia.
This musical movement had an influence of relaying political messages to people who were
considered to be outcasts of society.
House music was inspired by disco, soul, funk, electro and synthpop. It uses samplers, drum
machines, synthesizers, turntables, and sequencers. It features a kick drum on every beat and
usually has a tempo between 118 and 135 beats per minute
“HOUSE DANCE”
Improvised and emphasizes fast and complex foot- oriented steps combined with fluid
movements in the torso, as well as floor work.
It contains many elements of African dance, Latin, Brazilian, jazz, tap, modern, hip hop, soul,
funk ...
The main elements of House dance include “Footwork”, “Jacking”, and “Lofting”:
“Footwork” refers to dance technique aspects related to feet (foot position / foot action)
“Jacking” is a dance technique that comes from moving the torso forward and backward in a
rippling motion, as if a wave were passing through it. When this movement is repeated and
sped up to match the beat of a song it is called jacking, or "the jack." This technique is
arguably the most House dance is a social dance primarily danced to house music that has
roots in the clubs of Chicago and of New York.
This dance is often important movement in house dance because it is the foundation that
initiates more complex movements and footwork.
“Lofting” refers to movements performed on the floor.
APPLICATION OF THE ZUMBA® FORMULA
For the house routines that you will create in your class, we will still follow the Zumba® Formula
that you learned in your B1 training (Z=MC2). The Zumba® Formula is the key to a successful
class. To apply the Zumba® Formula you should listen and study the song several times to
identify:
- intro
- musical phrase
- chorus
- musical bridge
- outro
In your class you still maintains a good mix of rhythms including the basic rhythms that you
learned in B1 (Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Reggaeton) and many other Latin and International
rhythms (Samba, Belly dance, Hip Hop, House ...)
