MOBILE PHONES

A mobile phone is a communication device also called as “cell phone”. It is a

transmitter and receiver combined in one. It works like a cordless telephone. It is a device
mainly used for voice communication. However, technological developments in the field of
communication have made the mobile phone smart enough to be able to make video calls,
surf the internet, play games, take high resolution pictures and even control other relevant
gadgets. Because of this, mobile phones today are also called “smart phones”.

“Cell phones are the latest inventions in rudeness”

(Terri Gvillemets)
As man is a social animal, he needs to communicate with other people of the society.
In earlier times people used to write letters or send telegrams to communicate with their
near and clear ones. But it took a lot of time even days and weeks, to communicate through
these ways. As necessity is the mother of invention, their problem was solved by the
invention of telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. It was a big revolution in the field
of communication. But the problem with this was that you could not carry it to anywhere
you wanted. You were restricted to use it at a certain place. Soon enough in 1935 a scientist
invented the first FM radio which keeps you aware of your surroundings. This was all that
scientists needed to spring into action. Eleven years later, people were already beginning to
communicate in moving vehicles until 1973. Most mobile technology was limited to phones
installed in cars and other vehicles, referred to as “car phones”.

As Dean Kamen said:

“Every once in a while, a new technology, an old problem, and a big

idea turn into an innovation.”
World’s first ever mobile phone was demonstrated way back in 1973, by the
Motorola’s then president, Jhon Francis Mitchell and an American Engineer, Martin Cooper.
That cell phone named Motorola Dyna Tac 8000 x was twenty three centimeters long, 4.45
centimeters wide and weighed around two kilograms. It allowed you to talk for only thirty
minutes, and took ten hours to recharge. It was usually a great invention of that time. Six
years later, the first analogue cellular network was made. In 19881, 1G (the first generation
of wireless cellular technology) was slowly spreading throughout. In year 1983, Dyna TAC
launched the first mobile phone with 1G. This device cost 100 million dollar to develop, and
also had many problems. Many people knew the problems that the mobile phone had but
still wanted this amazing device. It was nothing less than a magic for them. It allowed the
people to talk to their loved ones even when they were miles away.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from

magic.”
(Arthur C.Cloake)
The use of mobile phones has increased drastically over the past years. There was a
time when getting telephone installed in one’s premises was an uphill task. People had to
wait for years and years to get a telephone connection. Now when you need a telephone
connection you just go to the market, choose a mobile phone out of hundreds of mobiles
and get a new SIM (subscriber identity module) and start talking to your family and friends.
All this happens just in a few minutes and spending a few thousand rupees. It is perhaps
because at this mobile that was once a status symbol but has now become a cheap toy with
which both the rich and the poor play and now we cannot imagine our lives without mobile
phones because:-

“Being out of communication with the world for a single moment

seems a great loss”
(R.M)
The biggest use of mobile phone is the ability to communicate wirelessly and across
the borders. By the use of mobile phones we can not only hear the other person but can
also see them. Today we can talk on videos chat with anyone across the globe by just moving
out fingers.

Now the condition is:-

“There is no wall, no barriers if we wish to talk to those we love.

Hearts send messages and the very next moment, they are received
on the screen.”
With the advent of mobile phones, distances have become meaningless. It has
insured the immediate link between cities, countries and continents, around the clock,
without any delay. A few years ago it was a status symbol but now it has become part and
parcel of our lives. Because such high levels of communication have been made possible by
it. That’s why it is said:-

“As long as you have a cell phone you’re never alone”

(Stanley Victor Paskavich)
Modern mobile phones also contain internet facility. They are just like pocket
computers sitting anywhere, even in our living room, we can browse through the whole
world of knowledge within seconds. We can access all the world’s information no matter
where we are, just by using a device small enough to fit in one hand. It has knit the world in
one whole and made the entire world one family. Events occurring in one part of the world
reverberate across the globe. Such high levels of communication have been made possible
by the mobile phones. Cell phones and mobile technology have become omnipresent in day
to day life mobile phones are time saving device. We can access almost any information on
internet without ever opening a book and a great place to shop and sell nearly anything.

It is rightly said:-

“Mobile phones are misnamed. They should be called gateways to

human knowledge”
(Ray Kurzweil)

Mobile phones have replaced bigger cameras some mobile phones have very good
quality camera that can be used to preserve the memories by clicking photos. Mobile
phones are not only used for getting information but also for entertainment. In our free time
we can play games, watch videos or movies and do much more. The mobiles of today are
gizmos that can do multiple functions.

You can’t have everything flawless. As a coin has two sides, here are the primary
disadvantages of mobile phones that have disrupted man’s life badly.

The greatest disadvantage of mobile phones is their capacity to disconnect us from each
other. It’s ironic how they’re designed to connect us, but so often leave us disengaged from
the people in our environment and distracted from the real, tangible world. You could be out
doing something with a close friend and spend the entire time looking at your mobiles!
You’re scrolling through Instagram instead of catching up on each other’s news; messaging
someone else when you could be engaging in an actual conversation; lost in the
mindlessness of the internet when you could be connecting with a loved one. It is true that:

“The more time we spend interconnected via myriads of devices,

the less time we have left to develop true friendship in the real
world.”

(Alex Morrit)

Mobile phones are the ultimate procrastination tool. It’s just so easy to waste your time
doing one thing or another. Whether you’re scrolling through the latest images on
Instagram, checking the latest snaps you’ve been sent on Snapchat, or watching endless clips
on TikTok, you can easily while away hours of your day doing one inane thing other another.

“A smart phone is an addictive device which traps a soul into

lifeless planet full of lives.”

(Munia Khan)

Cybercrime wreaks havoc all the time nowadays. Businesses are brought to a standstill,
people have their identities and hard-earned money stolen, and untold hassle ensues in
order to resolve the problem. Even worse, you can be targeted by your mobile as well. After
all, you’re walking around with a mini computer in your pocket that’s connected to the
internet. You can end up in a serious spot of bother if you click on the wrong thing, connect
to the wrong network, and share your password somehow, and so on.

“Cell phones are so convenient that they are an inconvenience.”

(Haruki Murakami)

Another con of mobile phones is a direct outcome of how addictive and distracting they can
be. Basically, they cause huge numbers of car accidents each year because people can’t help
but check/use them while they’re driving! People answer the phone, try to send/reply to
messages, and take their eyes off the road as a result. Before they know it, they’ve lost
control or crashed into somebody. Because of this constant form of communication, people
also feel compelled to keep communicating while behind the steering wheel. According to
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about nine people are killed every
day in the United States in accidents involving a distracted driver. This is in addition to over
1,000 injuries daily.

“you would be surprised how difficult it is to relinquish a cellphone.”

(Andrien Brody)

Although the dangers of cell phone towers have not been officially confirmed or refuted,
there is certainly some evidence that points toward tumors caused by cell phones. When you
consider what the disadvantages of mobile phones are, perhaps the greatest negative impact
could be the effects mobile phones may have on a person's health. Among the negative health
effects associated with proximity to cell phone towers are DNA damage, sleeplessness, eye
cancer, infertility, cardiac problems, and chronic fatigue. In the case of college students, 90
percent sleep with their phones on or next to them, 70 percent say they don't get enough
sleep, and 50 percent say they feel tired during the day. Cell phones can suppress melatonin,
alert the brain (rather than allow it to rest), and harm both the quantity and quality of sleep.

To pen off, mobile phones have good sides and bad sides. It depends on our using method
what effect we have to face. We need to become wise when we are using a mobile phone.
As all these bad and good reasons are linked with its usage, we need to use a cellphone in a
proper way. We should not be too addicted to the phone.
