3 Test Environment
To evaluate the coverage and throughput performance of a new 5G network, the TUE or CPE
is used as the terminal for uplink and downlink network access and data service tests. The
Probe is used to analyze and record the test results. During a TUE test, trace data of the test
must be captured on both the LTE and 5G sides.

9 Net Cables(including a 10G optical-electrical 4 (at least 1 is of
switch module) Cat6 type)
5G TUE uses antennas suitable for different frequency bands. In figure above, the first type
on the left is a low-frequency dual-polarized antenna, the middle is a single-polarized antenna,
and the right is a lower frequency band (700MHz~800MHz) test antenna.
The TUE (5G and LTE), power supply, antenna, maintenance PC and other devices should be
connected through network cables and optical fibers to form a test network during the TUE-
based 5G test process.
The backplane configuration of the two models are basically the same. The following figure
shows the specific interface configuration of 33L:
Definitions of ports on the cabling panel of the low-frequency TUE are as follows:
Serial port connection requires three dichotomous lines and serial port lines, respectively used in the main
control, radio frequency, baseband COM/DBG port;
The master OMT network port (ETH port) is connected by network cable;
A network cable and fiber module need be applied for the network port. And a network cable can be applied
to network port of RF board (ETH port of dichotomy) similarly;
The connections between 5G TUE master COM port and LTE TUE master COM port are described below:
(1)5G xGE port connects 4G GE port with network cable. This configuration, which is non-standard,
can only test the process, not suitable for peak test.
(2)5G xGE port is connected to 4G xGE port through 10G optical module and network cable of
CAT6 type. This configuration is standard. If direct RF connection is required, the RF feeders can be
connected to the RRU antenna ports of the base station, and the signal attenuators are required。
When configuring test networks, you should use 1 main control board, 1 RF board and at least
1 baseband board (The choice of boards needs to make sure whether the network
configuration under test of FDD or TDD).
The following table lists the main ports, buttons and their functions of a CPE:
In addition, if the capacity of the maintenance PC cannot meet the requirements of UL and DL
packet injection services, such as UL100Mbps and DL1000Mbps, TCP server needs to be
added to be specially used for TCP/UDP based packet injection test, as shown in figure
below:
Material for CPE-based networking on the Terminal side is shown in the table below:

When the status of the terminal is connected, the Probe can be used normally.
The Attach procedure of 5G NSA mainly includes UE LTE initial access, 5G measurements of
neighbor cells, 5G Secondary Station Addition and traffic path update process. The basic flow
chart is shown as follows:
Interface Description
The signaling flows are mainly from the air interface procedure of Attach and Detach test
captured on the Probe. The signaling information (such as the eNB/gNB and MME side) of
other interfaces can be traced or obtained by using the signaling tracing tools on the
corresponding interfaces based on the on-site conditions.

Step 2: Add a new device according to the Settings below. Note that the IP address used for
connection is different from that used for OMT connection to CPE. The Probe connection
needs to use: 192.168.1.1.
After the connection is successful, in the left navigation bar by selecting View ->NR, you can
choose to view the corresponding NR items; By selecting View -> LTE, you can choose to
View the corresponding LTE items.
The detailed meanings of the ICONS above from left to right are shown in the table below:
ICON Description
For USIM status, blue means normal, gray means unrecognized USIM
card.
Signal icon, where the second indicates LTE signal strength and the
third indicates NR signal strength
Dialing status, of which blue indicates the success of dialing, and UL
and DL data service can be carried out, and gray indicates no dialing
or failure of dialing, and data service cannot be done at this time
WiFi status, of which blue means WiFi on, gray means WiFi off.
After successful access, data traffic can be carried out. At that time, after logging into the Web
management page, you can see the IP address assigned to CPE, which will be used in the
operation of downlink packet injection later on.
If the access fails, you can follow the instructions in this section for troubleshooting.
2. Click Add to Add an APN, where Profile name can be set arbitrarily. The information of
APN, User name and Password need to be consistent with the registered information of USIM
card;
3. Upon entering the page: Internet - Network Connection , set the Connection Mode to
Always on, and Profile is set to the APN set in the previous step, and then submit:
After the submission, CPE will automatically start dialing, and the state will return to be
normal after the successful dialup.
Frequency locking can be carried out to ensure that CPE searches the specified frequency
first.
2、 Select Lock Frequency, and then check Lock at the bottom and select the frequency band
and frequency that need to be Locked. After submitting, CPE will restart automatically. After
restart, CPE will only search for the Locked frequency.
3. To disable the frequency locking function for the CPE to restore the full-band search
function, deselect Lock and click Submit.
After the frequency is locked, the CPE cannot perform inter-frequency handovers. To perform an
inter-frequency handover test, do not lock the frequency.
The CPE can access only the LTE network. Therefore, only the LTE frequency can be locked, and
the NR frequency cannot be locked.
After the upgrade, the frequency locking information becomes invalid. You need to lock the
frequency again.
If the base station configuration is correct, you can try to reconnect manually. The steps are as
follows:
Enter System ->Diagnosis page, select Modem Maintenance, and click Reconnect Network to
reconnect the networks.
If there is no signal shown for LTE, you can also try to Reconnect the Network by clicking the
Reconnect button;
The Restart Modem button will cause the Modem to Restart completely, so it is for the purpose of
troubleshooting only.
192.168.1.1 is the IP address of gateway on the IDU side, and 34.34.34.0 is the domain for core
network server. After the route is added, you can ping the server address so that the uplink data
traffic can be transmitted.
When performing packet injection, you need to run the command at the receiving end at first
and then at the sending end, otherwise the TCP connection cannot be established.
The cache size here is actually the sending or receiving cache size of Iperf software, which is
recommended to be set to 10 MB.
For UL packet injection, the destination IP is set as packet injection server IP. And for DL packet
injection, the destination IP needs to be set to the IP address assigned to CPE by the core network.
The number of processes need to be set according to the actual situation. When the throughput rate is
not enough, the number of processes can be appropriately increased. If there are too many processes
required, it is recommended to start another packet injection command separately. However,
increasing the number of processes will lead to a sharp increase in CPU and memory consumption of
the PC, which will affect the performance. Less than 60 is recommended
The -l parameter sets the package size, which cannot exceed 1360. It is recommended to set to 1000.
After the UL packet injection is started up through OMT, even if it is turned off, the process will not
stop automatically. The injection needs to be stopped manually on OMT. Otherwise, it will
automatically startup after reboot.
The set rate of packet injection is not an accurate value, and the set value should be greater than the
test target data rate.
Only UDP packet injection through OMT is supported, while TCP is not.
The following table lists the theoretical uplink data rate of an NR cell based on peak
configurations for reference during commissioning.
MCS, RANK will automatically be adjusted according to the uplink BLER. If the uplink BLER is
higher, MCS may not reach, say, 25.
The main factors affecting the Uplink data rate of NR cell is CPE transmit power. Due to the current
NR base station version of power control algorithm, the transmit power of CPE is too high at near-
point. Therefore, during laboratory test and field near-point test, it is necessary to set the CPE
transmit power through OMT. The target of fixed CPE transmit power is to make the base station
receiving power within a reasonable range.
Suggestion:
In order to achieve optimal load balance, the number of processes for laboratory test is a
multiple of 4 and not less than 12. -b parameter defines the throughput of a single process,
which needs to be adjusted according to the total packet injection and the number of
processes.
During packet injection, you need to run the command first at the receiving end and then at
the sending end, otherwise the TCP connection cannot be established.
1. The cache size here is actually the sending or receiving cache size of Iperf software, which is
recommended to be set to 10 MB
2. For UL packet injection, the destination IP is set as packet injection server IP. And for DL packet
injection, the destination IP needs to be set to the IP address assigned to CPE by the core network.
3. The number of processes need to be set according to the actual situation. When the throughput
rate is not enough, the number of processes can be appropriately increased. If there are too many
processes required, it is recommended to start another packet injection command separately.
However, increasing the number of processes will lead to a sharp increase in CPU and memory
consumption of the PC, which will affect the performance. No more than 60 is recommended
4. The -l parameter sets the package size, which cannot exceed 1360. It is recommended to set it to
1000.
And then start the process of Uu-interface packet injection in NR base station:
The random value is the random value identifier of UE for network access detected by LTE
base station. The default of E-RAB identifier is 5. The source IP address, source port,
destination IP address and destination port can be set arbitrarily. The length of message is
suggested to be set to 1280, the rate is greater than or equal to the target throughput of packet
injection, and the test duration is set to maximum 3600 s as required.
For the DL packet injection from base station, only UDP-based injection is supported, while TCP is
not;
The PC connected to CPE cannot receive data flow during the DL packet injection from base station
The following table lists the downlink theoretical throughput rate of LTE cells under different
channel conditions:
As can be seen from above table, in order to achieve the downlink data rate of 1000 Mbps,
both LTE and NR cells need to reach the highest-order scheduling, and the BLER cannot be
higher than 3%. In the actual test, it is recommended to adjust it below 1%.
The channel conditions and rate values listed above are for reference only and do not stand for the
actual capabilities of CPE.
CPE does not support 256QAM on LTE cells.
The main factors affecting the downlink peak rate include CPE position, uplink power,
downlink power, etc.
