3 Test Environment

To evaluate the coverage and throughput performance of a new 5G network, the TUE or CPE
is used as the terminal for uplink and downlink network access and data service tests. The
Probe is used to analyze and record the test results. During a TUE test, trace data of the test
must be captured on both the LTE and 5G sides.

3.1 Equipment Configuration for TUE Tests

3.1.1 Test equipment Configuration
Before TUE tests, Probe can be used to work with the test terminal TUE and other external
devices (such as switch, power group, etc.) to collect the data of air interface, record and save
the test log files. Before data collection, we need to prepare to install Probe and OMT (for 5G
as well as LTE) laptop, test terminal TUE (including 4G TUE and 5G TUE), GPS, switch,
network cable and power supply, etc. The overall connection mode of the test network based

5.2 Initial Access Test

5.2.1 USIM Activation
Before CPE accesses, a USIM card must be provisioned and has registered on the core
network.
Notes about activating the USIM:
1. The subscribed peak rate of the USIM account is not less than the one of CPE, and it is
recommended be more than 1Gbps;
2. Authentication and security algorithm configuration recommendations are to be enabled;
3. If you are allowed to write your own USIM card, make sure that the information you write,
such as IMSI, K, OP/OPC, etc. is completely consistent with the registered information in the
core network;.

5.2.2 Initial Access

Insert the prepared USIM that has been registered an account into the USIM slot, and then
power on. If both USIM and base station configuration are correct, CPE will be automatically
connected to the network, and the signal indicator light is always white. When logging into
the Web management page, the icon indicating that the CPE is successfully connected to the
network is displayed in the upper right corner, as shown in the following figure.:

Issue V2.0 (2018-09-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 27

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

The detailed meanings of the ICONS above from left to right are shown in the table below:
ICON Description
For USIM status, blue means normal, gray means unrecognized USIM
card.
Signal icon, where the second indicates LTE signal strength and the
third indicates NR signal strength
Dialing status, of which blue indicates the success of dialing, and UL
and DL data service can be carried out, and gray indicates no dialing
or failure of dialing, and data service cannot be done at this time
WiFi status, of which blue means WiFi on, gray means WiFi off.

After successful access, data traffic can be carried out. At that time, after logging into the Web
management page, you can see the IP address assigned to CPE, which will be used in the
operation of downlink packet injection later on.

If the access fails, you can follow the instructions in this section for troubleshooting.

5.2.2.1 APN Configuration

If LTE/NR signal is normal, but the dialup fails, the possible cause is that the APN is not
correctly set or the dialing mode is incorrect.
1. Login to the Website, and enter the Internet - APN Management page;

Issue V2.0 (2018-09-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 28

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

2. Click Add to Add an APN, where Profile name can be set arbitrarily. The information of
APN, User name and Password need to be consistent with the registered information of USIM
card;

3. Upon entering the page: Internet - Network Connection , set the Connection Mode to
Always on, and Profile is set to the APN set in the previous step, and then submit:

After the submission, CPE will automatically start dialing, and the state will return to be
normal after the successful dialup.

5.2.2.2 Frequency locking Setting

If there are several LTE cells in the environment, it will take a long time for CPE to search the
full frequency band during the period of PLMN searching. Then the page may show the state
that LTE is not connected:

Frequency locking can be carried out to ensure that CPE searches the specified frequency
first.

1、 Enter System→Diagnosis page:

Issue V2.0 (2018-09-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 29

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

2、 Select Lock Frequency, and then check Lock at the bottom and select the frequency band
and frequency that need to be Locked. After submitting, CPE will restart automatically. After
restart, CPE will only search for the Locked frequency.

3. To disable the frequency locking function for the CPE to restore the full-band search
function, deselect Lock and click Submit.

 After the frequency is locked, the CPE cannot perform inter-frequency handovers. To perform an
inter-frequency handover test, do not lock the frequency.
 The CPE can access only the LTE network. Therefore, only the LTE frequency can be locked, and
the NR frequency cannot be locked.
 After the upgrade, the frequency locking information becomes invalid. You need to lock the
frequency again.

5.2.2.3 Modem Re-connection

If the LTE signal is normal but the NR signal is unavailable:

Issue V2.0 (2018-09-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 30

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

If the base station configuration is correct, you can try to reconnect manually. The steps are as
follows:
Enter System ->Diagnosis page, select Modem Maintenance, and click Reconnect Network to
reconnect the networks.

 If there is no signal shown for LTE, you can also try to Reconnect the Network by clicking the
Reconnect button;
 The Restart Modem button will cause the Modem to Restart completely, so it is for the purpose of
troubleshooting only.

5.3 Ping Test

After successful dialing, you can verify that the network is connected by Ping command.
If the core network is already connected to the Internet, you can directly Ping Google, Baidu
and other websites. If the core network is only a test network, it is necessary to deploy the
packet server for it and Ping packets can be sent to the packet server.
When Ping test is performed on a PC with multiple network adaptors, the IP address routing
to the core network needs to be added to the PC:

route add 34.34.34.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 –p

Issue V2.0 (2018-09-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 31

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

 192.168.1.1 is the IP address of gateway on the IDU side, and 34.34.34.0 is the domain for core
network server. After the route is added, you can ping the server address so that the uplink data
traffic can be transmitted.

5.4 Uplink Data Test

5.4.1 Configuration for UL peak rate test
To meet the performance requirements of the uplink peak test, ensure that the following
settings are activated on the base station side and the terminal side before the test:
1. The type of the uplink reference signal (DMRS) is set to TYPE2 without additional DMRS
to ensure the minimal overhead of the reference signal;
2. The transmit power of CPE is to be set appropriately. Higher transmit power may lead to
saturation of received signals and increase of BLER, and lower power results in lower SNR
and higher BLER too.
3. Configure the MIMO type to 2T4R.

5.4.2 Uplink Packet Injection by Iperf

For the uplink packet injection, the PC plays the role of the client and the server of the
receiver. Enter the following command in the PC command window:

1) UDP packet injection ( Run on CPE-connected server )

iperf –c server IP –b amount –u –I 1 –t 99999 –l 1000 –p 5896 –P

process id

To achieve optimal load balance, it is recommended that the number of processes be a

multiple of 4 and not less than 12. -b parameter defines the throughput of a single process,
which needs to be adjusted according to the total packet injection and the number of
processes.
The command of TCP UL packet injection:
Run the command in CMD window of receiver (server for packet injection):

iperf –s –I 1 –t 999 –p 5896 –l 1000 –w size of window

Run the command in CMD window of transmitter (CPE connected server):

iperf –c receiving serverIP –I 1 –t 999 –l 1000 –p 5896 –l 1000 –w

size of window –P process number

When performing packet injection, you need to run the command at the receiving end at first
and then at the sending end, otherwise the TCP connection cannot be established.

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

 The cache size here is actually the sending or receiving cache size of Iperf software, which is
recommended to be set to 10 MB.
 For UL packet injection, the destination IP is set as packet injection server IP. And for DL packet
injection, the destination IP needs to be set to the IP address assigned to CPE by the core network.
 The number of processes need to be set according to the actual situation. When the throughput rate is
not enough, the number of processes can be appropriately increased. If there are too many processes
required, it is recommended to start another packet injection command separately. However,
increasing the number of processes will lead to a sharp increase in CPU and memory consumption of
the PC, which will affect the performance. Less than 60 is recommended
 The -l parameter sets the package size, which cannot exceed 1360. It is recommended to set to 1000.

5.4.3 Uplink Packet Injection through OMT

If there is no packet injection server, UDP packet injection can also be performed through
CPE and can be controlled by OMT:

 After the UL packet injection is started up through OMT, even if it is turned off, the process will not
stop automatically. The injection needs to be stopped manually on OMT. Otherwise, it will
automatically startup after reboot.
 The set rate of packet injection is not an accurate value, and the set value should be greater than the
test target data rate.
 Only UDP packet injection through OMT is supported, while TCP is not.

5.4.4 Uplink Test Instructions

To reach the target of the uplink throughput rate of 100 Mbps, make sure that the uplink rate
of NR cell can reach 80Mbps and that of LTE reaches 20 Mbps. LTE is used for single
antenna in the uplink. Generally speaking, as long as the signal strength is adjusted to the
appropriate range, the throughput target can be achieved without special adjustments.

Issue V2.0 (2018-09-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 33

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

The following table lists the theoretical uplink data rate of an NR cell based on peak
configurations for reference during commissioning.

DU conf. Type RLC rate MCS RANK

DL:UL=4:1 UDP 80Mbps 25 RANK2
DL:UL=4:1 UDP 90Mbps 28 RANK2
DL:UL=8:2 UDP 80Mbps 25 RANK2
DL:UL=8:2 UDP 90Mbps 28 RANK2

 MCS, RANK will automatically be adjusted according to the uplink BLER. If the uplink BLER is
higher, MCS may not reach, say, 25.
 The main factors affecting the Uplink data rate of NR cell is CPE transmit power. Due to the current
NR base station version of power control algorithm, the transmit power of CPE is too high at near-
point. Therefore, during laboratory test and field near-point test, it is necessary to set the CPE
transmit power through OMT. The target of fixed CPE transmit power is to make the base station
receiving power within a reasonable range.

5.5 Downlink Test

5.5.1 Configuration for DL peak rate test
For downlink test, it is also necessary to set corresponding parameters to obtain the optimal
test performance:
1. There are two kinds of time slot configurations, which need to be configured with
corresponding requirements. Time slot ratio 4:1 corresponds to SS1, and time slot ratio 8:2
corresponds to SS51.
2. The type of PDSCH DMRS is TYPE2.
3. Layer number of MIMO configuration should be set to 4.
4. Modulation order should be set to support 256QAM.

5.5.2 Downlink Packet Injection by Iperf

Downlink packet injection is the procedure that packet injected from CN back-end server to
CPE.

1. The command for DL UDP packet injection :(Run in CN server)

iperf –c CPE-IP –b rate –u –i 1 –t 99999 –l 1000 –p 5896 –P number

of processes

Suggestion:
In order to achieve optimal load balance, the number of processes for laboratory test is a
multiple of 4 and not less than 12. -b parameter defines the throughput of a single process,
which needs to be adjusted according to the total packet injection and the number of
processes.

(2) Run the command in the CMD window in transmitter:

iperf –c cpe-ip –I 1 –t 999 –p 5896 –l 1000 –w sizeofwindow –P

processnumber

During packet injection, you need to run the command first at the receiving end and then at
the sending end, otherwise the TCP connection cannot be established.

 1. The cache size here is actually the sending or receiving cache size of Iperf software, which is
recommended to be set to 10 MB
 2. For UL packet injection, the destination IP is set as packet injection server IP. And for DL packet
injection, the destination IP needs to be set to the IP address assigned to CPE by the core network.
 3. The number of processes need to be set according to the actual situation. When the throughput
rate is not enough, the number of processes can be appropriately increased. If there are too many
processes required, it is recommended to start another packet injection command separately.
However, increasing the number of processes will lead to a sharp increase in CPU and memory
consumption of the PC, which will affect the performance. No more than 60 is recommended
 4. The -l parameter sets the package size, which cannot exceed 1360. It is recommended to set it to
1000.

5.5.3 Downlink Packet Injection Through Base Station

If packet injected from the Core Network is not allowed, injection from base station can be
used for simulating downlink packet injection.
First, query UE in LTE base station by access random identity:

DSP ALLUEBASICINFO: LocalCellId=0, UeType=UE;

And then start the process of Uu-interface packet injection in NR base station:

Issue V2.0 (2018-09-10) Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. 35

5G Network Test Environment Commissioning Guide Security level:

The random value is the random value identifier of UE for network access detected by LTE
base station. The default of E-RAB identifier is 5. The source IP address, source port,
destination IP address and destination port can be set arbitrarily. The length of message is
suggested to be set to 1280, the rate is greater than or equal to the target throughput of packet
injection, and the test duration is set to maximum 3600 s as required.

 For the DL packet injection from base station, only UDP-based injection is supported, while TCP is
not;
 The PC connected to CPE cannot receive data flow during the DL packet injection from base station

5.5.4 Downlink Test Instructions

To reach the target of the downlink rate of 1000 Mbps, it is necessary to ensure that the
downlink throughput rate of NR cell reaches 860 Mbps and that the downlink rate of LTE cell
reaches 140 Mbps.
The following table lists the downlink theoretical throughput rate of NR cell based on peak
configuration for reference in the measurement.

2R/4R Type DL PDCP rate MCS Mod. level RANK BLER

2R/272RB UDP 760Mbps 25 256QAM RANK2 3%

The following table lists the downlink theoretical throughput rate of LTE cells under different
channel conditions:

UDP 145Mbps 28 64QAM RANK2 0.5%
UDP 140Mbps 28 64QAM RANK2 3%
UDP 130Mbps 26 64QAM RANK2 3%

As can be seen from above table, in order to achieve the downlink data rate of 1000 Mbps,
both LTE and NR cells need to reach the highest-order scheduling, and the BLER cannot be
higher than 3%. In the actual test, it is recommended to adjust it below 1%.

 The channel conditions and rate values listed above are for reference only and do not stand for the
actual capabilities of CPE.
 CPE does not support 256QAM on LTE cells.

The main factors affecting the downlink peak rate include CPE position, uplink power,
downlink power, etc.
