ELECTIVE II (SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE)

OBJECTIVES
 Sustainable architecture aims to create environment –
friendly and energy efficient building by actively harnessing
renewable nature sources of energy (solar energy etc.) and
utilizing materials that least pollute the environment

 The objectives include creating awareness of designing

energy efficient building envelopes that respond to the
climate of a place bldg. lighting of resource – efficient
practices in India, advocating of the application of
renewable energy system and the promotion of efficient
lighting & HVAC system to reduce energy demand.

 Propose and evaluate strategies for improving the energy

1st UN CONFERENCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT [1972] DEFINITION SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
In 1972, it took place in Stockholm
the UN Conference on the
environment – the first big world
leaders meeting organized by the
UN to discuss the human impact on
the environment and how it was
related to economic development.
One of the main goals of this
gathering was to find a common
outlook and common principles to
inspire and guide the world‘s
population to preserve the ―human
environment‖.

ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

The impact of a person or community on the

environment, expressed as the amount of
land required to sustain their use of natural
resources.

Our human activities consume resources and

produce waste, and nature needs to have
the capacity to meet these demands. The
‗Ecological Footprint‘ is a way to measure
our human demand on nature.

WHAT ARE THE SUSTAINABLE

RESOURCE CONSUMPTION
DEVELOPMENT GOALS?
 The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the
Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member
States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty,
protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and
prosperity by 2030.
 The 17 SDGs are integrated—that is, they recognize that
action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that
development must balance social, economic and environmental
sustainability.

THE GLOBAL AGENDA

Water is life. Not only is water essential for survival, it
is critical for agriculture, industrial use and domestic
purposes. Availability of clean water is heavily
dependent on appropriate waste management. Goal 6
on Clean Water and Sanitation aims to improve water
quality by reducing pollution, substantially of local
