The passage discusses different types of minerals and ores found in the Earth's crust, how metals are extracted from ores through chemical reactions, and some potential environmental impacts of mining.

Ores are naturally occurring minerals that contain metals or metals compounds. They can be made up of combinations of elements like iron, oxygen, silicon, and aluminum. Different ores vary in terms of composition, texture and appearance depending on what elements they contain.

Iron is extracted from its ores like hematite and magnetite through high temperature chemical reactions in a blast furnace. Iron ore reacts with carbon to produce iron and carbon dioxide gas. The molten iron separates from the slag and is then collected.
