Heat and Thermal Expansion Worksheet

1. The period τ of a pendulum is given by the function:

l
τ =2 π
√ g

where l is a function of temperature (due to the properties of thermal expansion).

By calculating the rate of change of τ with respect to l, derive an equation which gives the
percentage change in the period of a pendulum in terms of the thermal expansion of the length of
the pendulum.

2. Suppose you found some old scientific notes that describe an old temperature scale called Z on
which the boiling point of water is 65oZ and the freezing point is −14oZ.

What temperature change ∆T would correspond to a change of 35oF?

To what temperature on the Fahrenheit scale would a temperature T = −98oZ correspond?

3. A chocolate bar has a nutritional value of 350 Cal.

How many kilowatt-hours of energy will it deliver to the body as it is digested?
How long would this amount of energy keep a 100 W light bulb burning for?

4. A copper bolt whose mass, mc, is 75 g is heated in a laboratory oven to a temperature of 312oC.
The bolt is then dropped into a glass beaker containing a mass mw = 220 g of water. The heat
capacity Cb of the beaker is 45 cal K−1. The initial temperature of the water is 12oC.

What is the final temperature Tf of the copper bolt, the beaker and the water when thermal
equilibrium is reached?
