1. Testing Assessment

Assessment is seen as a procedure instead of product. It is used during & after the
instruction has taken place.

Meanwhile, testing/test is one of form of assessment. It is done after the instructions has taken
place it is a way to complete the instruction and get the results. The results of the test don’t have to be
interrupted, unlike assessment.

Measurement & Evaluation

Measurement refers to the process of delegating a numerical index to the object in meaningful
and consistent manner. It comprises the observations which can be expressed numerically, and mostly
answers “How much” questions.

While, Evaluation is when the comparison is being made between the score of a learner with the
score of other learners and judge the results. It answers such questions “How good or How well”.

2.

Using summative assessment to measure weather the learners have met the content and
performance standards. The result of this are used as basis for computing grades. The goal it to evaluate
student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or criterion.

Using formative assessment to provide learners with immediate feedback on how well they are
learning. However, the result of this assessment is documented but not included in computing grades.
The goal is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by teachers to
improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.

3.

Placement role is used to determine the performance or abilities of students at the beginning of
instructions.

Diagnostic role is used to diagnose the student’s learning difficulties during instructions, it is to
determine the specific learning needs of the students, what are their strength and weaknesses. It uses
pre-test, self-assessment, discussion board response, and interviews.

Formative role is used to monitor the learning progress of the students during instructions. It helps
detect which student need attention. Observations during in-class activities; homework exercises,
reflections journals; and Question and Answer sessions are some types of this role.
Summative role is the overall assessment. It is given at the end of a course unit. The purpose of this
role is to determine the instructional objectives achieved, student’s mastery, and also provide
information for judging and effectiveness of instruction.

4. Diagnostic Assessment Vs. Placement Assessment

Diagnostic assessment provides teachers/instructor about students’ prior knowledge and

misconceptions before beginning a learning activity. They also provide a base line for understanding
how much learning has taken place after the learning activity is completed.

While Placement Assessment is designed to improved chances for success like for example:
when a student starting college, it is important to be placed in the right classes where it matches the
student’s current abilities.

5. How can assessment improve teaching-learning process?

It improves long-term recall for students and provide the opportunity to reduce test anxiety and
help content mastery. It helps them boost their motivation to improve their exam performance. It helps
them see what they are aiming for, to avoid experiencing such difficulties like for example: spending
hours preparing for a major assessment, only to discover that the material that he/she had studied was
different from what the teacher really emphasized on the assessment.

As for teachers, assessment allows them to see if their teaching has been effective, it helps them
ensure if the students learn what they need to know in order to meet the courses learning objectives.

7. Principle of Education Assessment

 Assessment will be reliable and consistent.
The reliability of an assessment tool is the extent to which it consistently and accurately
measures learning. When the results of an assessment are reliable, we can be confident that
repeated or equivalent assessment will provide consistent result.

 Assessment will be explicit and transparent.

This principle defines that there must be clarifications to students on how they will be
assessed and based on what criteria. Assessment instructions must also be provided also
purpose of assessment as well as expectations.
