Project Proposal: “BisikleTara” Group Bicycle Fun Ride Event

I. Objectives

• To make our community physically active by promoting cycling in our

community, no matter what age, skill levels, and type of bike they have.
• To bring people together, have fun, stay physically active and to turn their
lives into an enjoying fit and healthy lifestyle.
• This project also aims to make our community bicycle-friendly and help
achieve many of the UNSDGs

II. Background

BisikleTara is a group bicycle fun ride event, that will start in the year 2021,
this event will happen every week. It is to keep and maintain the people in the
community physically active. The name BisikleTara is from the idea of “Tara! Mag
bisikleta tayo”, it is what Filipinos say when they invite you to ride a bicycle.
‘Bisikleta’ a Tagalog word for ‘bicycle’ and ‘tara’ is the Tagalog translation of “Let’s
go”. Inviting your family, friends and other people to ride a bicycle with you with a
positive energy and good vibes. Its name is related from the projects event’s
second goal, as you invite people to ride a bicycle, you also to bring people
together to have fun, and stay physically active.

This group bicycle fun ride event that I am proposing is a fun ride with two
categories, Category A is a 50km Endurance Fun ride in the morning and the
Category B is a 10km fun ride in the afternoon that is for everyone, it is open for
all ages, from a kid to a senior, if you can still ride a bike, you are welcome. It is
also open for all skill levels, from a newbie, to a pro cyclist and any type of bike is
also allowed. This project event is also inspired by “Slow Roll” group bicycle ride
in Detroit, United States of America.

This project event promotes cycling and helps to address the issue in our
community about lack of active participation in physical activities. Based on Sun
Life Financial Asia Health Index. Philippines is among those with the highest
percentage of citizens who do not exercise regularly mostly due to lack of time,
lack of personal motivation and “distractions” of modern life.

Regular exercise and physical activity are important because it promotes strong
muscles and bones. It improves respiratory, cardiovascular health, and overall
health. Staying active can also help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your
risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and reduce your risk for some cancers.

The reason why I chose cycling to be the main physical activity in my proposal
because I have seen many people in our community that are becoming less
physically active and the number of people without having a normal weight is
increasing in our community, and cycling is one good example of a physical activity
because cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood
vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and
experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness
level. Cycling is also a good way to control or reduce weight because it can raise
your metabolic rate, builds muscle and burn fat. It can improve both physical and
mental health and can reduce the chances of experiencing many health problems.
Cycling is also good for leisure and a good way to have fun while becoming
physically active. It can improve the mental health of the people in our community
because it can release their stress in cycling. Cycling can also help people to
develop new friends and become more sociable, which it can also help them to
have an active participation in physical activities, because doing physical activities
is more fun to do, if you are doing it in a group.

Lockdown in the Philippines boost the number of cyclist, because cycling

became an alternative for most people as the public transportation stopped, people
also choose cycling to release their boredom and to do physical activities as they
already allow cycling in the quarantine guidelines. The increasing number of
cyclists also gives me an opportunity to create this event, as long as people will
still follow quarantine protocols, like social distancing, wearing face masks and of
course always wear a helmet when cycling.

III. Scope

This project event’s goal will be very helpful for our community, because as we
promote cycling in our community it can also help achieve many of the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goal. First is the SDG#3 as it helps to achieve
“Good Health and Well-Being”, SDG#2 (Ending all forms of malnutrition), SDG#11
(Sustainable cities and communities), SDG#13 (Climate action), SDG #15 (Life on
land) and SDG#17 (partnerships).

BisikleTara is also a fundraising weekly event that will help to make our
community 100% bicycle-friendly. This event will be a very good start to promote
a bicycle-friendly community like Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and
Germany. If this project event will be successful, it is expected that the people in
our community is now physically active and the risk of cardiovascular disease and
other health disease will be decreased. It is also beneficial during this pandemic
as long as they are strictly following safety protocols, because cycling is very
helpful to boost our immunity system. Cycling is also beneficial not just for our
physical and mental health but also for our community and environment, because
this group bicycle fun ride can also help promote the use of bicycles as a
Cheska Maniquis

transportation and it will be very helpful to our nature because it does not pollute
and harm the environment.

One of BisikleTara’s goal is to bring people together and this BisikleTara group
bicycle fun ride will be held every Saturday, people who wants to join will meet in
different venues to go to different unique routes, it will allow them to see and
experience the world in a different way when they are riding a bike. They can also
wear anything they want, from Lycra jerseys to T-shirt and jogging pants, as long
as they are comfortable wearing it while cycling. As it brings people together, it will
help spread positive vibes and energy while having fun cycling. This event is not
just environment-friendly but also family-friendly, because it will also be a good
opportunity to have fun and bond with their families and their friends. People are
all welcome, even from different town or cities. The more people who join, the more
fun it will be. Because people will get the chance to meet different people and make
new friends.

BisikleTara will also be open for donations and sponsorships for those who
would like to support this event in being successful and to help promote a bicycle-
friendly community. Our community lacked in bicycle lanes, and the competition
for space and among public and private vehicles as well as cyclists and
pedestrians is an issue. But every problem, there is a solution. In partnership with
the Local Government Unit, we could fix this issue. We can improve sidewalks to
share with pedestrians and cyclists. The excess funds that will be collected from
the membership fees, donations and sponsorships will be used to add bicycle
lanes, bike racks and other expenses to make this project event successful. And
once it starts to become successful, we can make more projects in the future to
make our community 100% physically active and 100% bicycle-friendly, like
providing free bike lessons, teaching safety and bike techniques, providing cycling

training program, bike rentals, organize grand races, more events and etc.
BisikleTara group bicycle fun ride event will start on January 9, 2021 and hope to
be continued and still successful after many years.

In the phase one of this project event is all about planning for this event, the
plan must be carefully made and we need to have the LGUs to have partnership
with us, because it is one of the main key for this project to happen, that’s why we
need to do everything we can so the LGUs will approve our project event. Once
the proposal project event has been approved, we can now start with the next
phase. We need to advertise this event by not spending anything, all we need is
social media and invite many people as we can. In the phase two, we need to have
a capital that’s why we will need sponsors and partners for this event, we can ask
for our local supermarkets, bike shops and other shops in exchange for advertising
their business. In the phase three, the registration for membership will now be
open. BisikleTara guarantees that this event is affordable and accessible for the
majority of the community. People who will like to join will need to register for a
membership and pay a one-time payment of membership fee for only fifty pesos,
for basic membership and one hundred fifty pesos for premium membership, to
support and make this event fully organized. In the phase four, is the start of the
group bicycle fun ride. Attendance will be held always in the assembly, and if the
member did not join any ride within one month, their membership will be forfeited,
and the officers in the group will contact the member to inform and remind them, it
is to maintain people to join the event regularly and make them physically active.
People who doesn’t have their membership I.D, helmet and mask are not allowed
to join the fun ride. Their I.Ds are important to check their attendance and anyone
who attends 15 fun rides consecutively will be rewarded. It is to acknowledge that
member for being active in joining the fun ride events. There will be also some
officers during the fun ride that will ensure the safety and the organization of the
event. In the phase five, is the continuation of the event, and develop more plans
on how to keep the people in our community physically active and make
BisikleTara more successful. Every excess fund will be saved for the phase six so
other projects and new categories will now be offered, to earn more funds that will
be used to make the community bicycle-friendly.
