What Makes a Roller Coaster Roll?

What's your favorite ride at." amusement park? For many people, it's a rolercoaster.
No matter how high or how long, all roller coasters work in the same way. They depend on
energy and gravity. Some roller coaster cars look similar to the passenger cars on a train. But
a roller coaster car has no engine or other source of power. The only help it gets is on the
very first piece of track.
That's when the car is pulled up the first hill, usually by a chain lift. After that, gravity
takes over. The farther the car goes up, the farther it has to come down. As the car goes up, it
collects energy. This energy gets used as the car zooms down the hill. That makes a new kind
of energy. The new energy makes the car speed up the next hill.
The constant exchange of energy keeps the roller coaster going. That's why a
roller coaster can go for hundreds of feet at
high speeds. Some of the longest coasters
have track that is a mile long. In time, though,
the energy wears out. Then as the saying goes,
"All good things must come to an end."

Daily Assesment 6 [ Page 84 ]

Many football matches have been marred

in recent years by the violent or abusive behavior
of the fans. Some people say that sports teams
should be punished for the behavior of fans.
However, this statement draws pros and cons
among the sport lovers and common people.
Many people argue that this action would
be effective. Fans love their teams and do not
want them to suffer, therefore this will act as a
powerful deterrent. This deterrent will act on an
individual level, but also especially at a group
level where peer pressure will act to stamp out
anti-social behavior to protect a team's success.
However, many people say that if there
is a problem with the behavior of fans, then
it is better to tackle the fans themselves. It is
possible to identify strongly punish offenders.
If necessary, hold games with no spectators so
that it is the fans who suffer and not the team.
Moreover, sport already works hard to send
strong messages on values and behavior.
Some say that we should work with not against
teams to stamp out problems.

reasons. However, I agree if the sports teams
would be punished for the behavior of their
fans. Or, the sport clubs would be penalized for
the hooliganism of their fans.

Many studies have shown that musical
training can enhance language skills. However,
it was unknown whether music lessons improve
general cognitive ability, leading to better
language proficiency, or if the effect of music is
more specific to language processing.
A new study from MIT has found that
piano lessons have a very specific effect on
kindergartners' ability to distinguish different
pitches, which translates into an improvement
in discriminating between spoken words.
However, the piano lessons did not appear
to confer any benefit for overall cognitive
ability, as measured by IQ, attention span, and
working memory.
Some studies have shown that on
average, musicians perform better than
non-musicians on tasks, such as reading
comprehension, distinguishing speech from
background noise, and rapid auditory processing.
However, most of these studies have been done
by asking people about their past musical training.
The MIT researchers wanted to perform a more
controlled study in which they could randomly
assign children to receive music lessons or not,
and then measure the effects.
Children who had piano lessons
showed a significant advantage over children
in the extra reading group in discriminating
between words that differ by one consonant.
Children in both the piano group and extra
reading group performed better than children
who received neither intervention when it
came to discriminating words based on vowel
differences.

Because....
A. to ask people about their past musical training

Many people like playing video games

On the other hand, some say that
violent games are just entertainment and
the government should not intervene to limit
people's freedom of choice to play them, as
they do not harm the player or anyone else.

A Year with Marmalade

(By Alison Reynolds)

In Maddy's absence, will Marmalade

and Ella become friends?
One autumn day, Maddy tells Ella that
her family is leaving for a year. Maddy also asks
Ella to watch her orange tabby cat, Marmalade.
Both Ella and Marmalade cry as Maddy's family
drives off. Ella tries all the things she liked doing
with Maddy. She tosses leaves, but Marmalade
doesn't toss them back. She picks apples, but
Marmalade just bats them away. She stomps
through puddles, but she's the only one that
gets wet. Then one winter day, Ella wakes with
warm feet (Marmalade's been snuggling), and
later Marmalade "reads" with her by the fireside.
In spring, they dig in the garden and they visit
the beach in summer. When Maddy returns
autumn, all three friends enjoy every season
together. Prolific Australian author, Reynold's
tale of friendship and seasons is a heartwarming
one. Ella and Marmalade's relationship develops
slowly as the year progresses.
McKenzie's pen-and-ink illustrations,
partially colored with watercolors, are sweet,
wide-eyed, and dynamic, often flowing
along with the type. Though it's odd that the
reason for Maddy's lengthy absence is never
revealed, audiences will identify with Ella and
her uncertainty with a new pet.
Expressive Marmalade with his large
green eyes will definitely charm cat lovers.

grade, and everyone is going to be new at the
middle school. Up until this point, Auggie hasn't
gone to regular school, but his parents think that
he should go at some point, and going sooner
rather than later will make it easier.
During the middle of the summer,
Auggie is invited to the middle school to get a
tour of the school that is being conducted by
three kids his age. After going on the tour and
seeing the school, Auggie soon learns that
school is going to be a challenge with the other
kids, especially one named Julian.
However, after the first few days
of school, which don't go so great, Auggie
befriends a kid named Jack Will, and after
getting to know Auggie, Jack and him get pretty
close. They were good friends until Jack makes
a bad mistake and jeopardizes their friendship.
Auggie then feels friendless, helpless, and
weak until he befriends a girl named Summer.
Meanwhile, Auggie's sister is going
through issues of her own in high school because
her best friend is no longer talking to her, and
she struggles in life because she feels that her
parents don't pay attention to her. She feels
that Auggie is the sun, and that everyone else
is planets revolving around the sun. The issues
that occur in high school are affecting her, and
she feels that she has no one to go to after their
grandma died. This movie is really well done, and it
truly elucidates really problems that occur
in American schools. This actors mesh well
together, and Owen Wilson as Auggie's dad
is really believable. The ending of the movie
truly is heartwarming and is sure to make some
cry. Wonder shows the world the power of
friendship and how it doesn't matter what's on
the outside, but what matters is on the inside.

Can set the sea in motion (ohh)
A simple act of kindness (ohh)
