Last year I joined a speech contest in my neighborhood to comemmorate the Indonesia


Independence Day. Actually I did not want to join the contest, but my family encouraged me
to participate and even my brother registered me to the committee.
There were a lot of participants from around my neighborhood. Most of them were
teenagers, and some of the were adults. When I observed other participants I got a bit
nervous because I saw them wore various heroic customs and accessories. Oh, my God, I did
not prepare my self as well as they had done. “Oh God, please help me”, I wished. I then
encouraged my self that I could deliver the speech well although I did not wear outstanding
custom.
When I delivered my speech I tried hard to forget about my costum and focused on the
materials. Finally I could do my job well and got the third winner. That’s not too bad. It was
really a thrilling but amazing moment I have ever experienced.

Malin Kundang

A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra, a woman and her son
lived. They were Malin Kundang and her mother. He was a healthy, and strong boy. He usually
went to sea to catch fish and sold the caught fish in the town.
One day, when he was sailing, he saw a merchant’s ship which was being raided by a
pirates. He helped the merchant and defeated the pirates. In return the merchant asked him to
sail with him. He agreed.
Many years later, he came wealthy. He had a huge ship and a beautiful wife. When he was
sailing his trading journey, his ship landed on a beach near a small village. The villagers
recognized him. The news ran fast in the town. An old woman ran to the beach to meet him. She
was his mother. She wanted to hug him. Unfortunately, when the mother came, he who was in
front of his wife and his ship crews denied meeting that old woman. For three times her mother
begged him. At last he said to her “Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, an
ugly woman!” After that he ordered his crews to set sail. But in that time, she was full of both
sadness and angriness.

Finally, enraged, she cursed him that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize. He just
laughed and really set sail. In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was
wrecked , he was thrown by the wave out of his ship. He fell on a small island. It was too late for
him to avoid his curse. Suddenly, he turned into a stone.

GORILLAS

Gorillas are the largest of all the primates. A male gorilla can be 180 centimeters tall
and can weigh 200 kilograms. Gorillas are very strong but they do not often fight. In
fact they are peaceful animals. Gorillas live in small family groups of about 15. In a
group there is one strong, older male, some young males, and a few females with their

How to Use Digital Camera

You need :

Follow the steps below to take pictures:


1. Hold up the camera and centre the object in the LCD
2. Move closer or use the zoom control for the result you want
3. When you’re ready to take the picture, hold the shutter halfway. It’s very
important, so the camera sets the focus, shutter speed and various other
calculations. This may take a few seconds.
4. A light should appear that lets you know the camera is set to go.
5. Press shutter all the way down.
It may be necessary to turn off the LCD and use the view finder when there is
extreme sunlight or to conserve battery life. The glare from the LCD does not
work well with bright light.

The Yogya Kembali Monument is located in Yogyakarta. It is three kilometres north of


the Yogya city centre in the Jongkang village of the Sleman Regency. The monument
was inaugurated on June 29th, 1985 to commemorate the historic Indonesian struggle for
independence. Yogya Kembali means Yogya Returns, as a reminder of the returning of
the Indonesian Republic Government.

There are two sections of the Yogya Kembali Monument. The first section of the Cureng
Aircraft is on the eastern gate, while the other section of Guntai Aircraft stands closer to
the western entrance of the monument. The Monument has two wheeled-machine guns
which can be seen from a podium towards the eastern and the western side. In the
southern end of the yard, there is a wall engraved with 420 names of freedom fighters
who lost their lives during a great struggle, from December 19th, 1948 to June 29th,
1949. A poem by Chairil Anwar, titled Karawang Bekasi, is written on one side of the
wall dedicated to these unknown patriots.

The Yogya Kembali Monument is surrounded by fish ponds. It is divided into four alleys
which lead to the main building. The main building consists of different floors displaying
a wide range of collections during and after the war times. It shows dioramas, carved
reliefs or collection of clothes and weapons.
