Introduction
Welcome to the second version of Pentatonic shape patterns for improvising.

I have added several new shapes to the Pdf so as to provide more ideas
for creative improvisation.

I am particularly pleased to include 12 new specially made playalongs

to accompany each tonality designed to make practice sessions more
effective and enjoyable.

I believe practicing the exercises with the chordal accompaniment is

beneficial for the following reasons:
1) Tuning. Whilst playing the exercises, the player can focus and be aware
of their intonation at every moment, listening to how the notes blend
with the chords. As each exercise spans such a wide range this is far more
useful than tuning to individual notes!
2) Harmony. By carefully listening whilst playing, the player can start to
become aware how the same pentatonic notes feel differently as the chords
change, developing harmonic sensibility.

Using the Mp3 playalongs with the book

If you play a concert key instrument like Piano, Flute or Guitar you can
read this PDF as is with the Mp3 tracks. The Eb minor PDf works with the Eb
minor Playlong for instance.

If you play an Eb or Bb instrument you will need to transpose.

At the bottom of each exercise it is indicated which Mp3 to use

if you are playing an Eb or Bb instrument.

The exercises are presented chromatically.

There are lower versions included for instruments with a lower range
such as Trumpet and Clarinet.

Good luck and enjoy! Nick

The Chords

Here in C minor is the sequence of chords heard in the Mp3 backing tracks

Below is how the C minor Pentatonic relates to each different chord.

C minor Pentatonic relating to C minor

Played over C minor the Minor Pentatonic has

a Classic sound that is used so much in Pop,-
Jazz, and Funk as every notes works! The flat
7th Bb is a particularly important part of the
1 b3 4 5 b7 sound.

C minor Pentatonic relating to Abmajor/Bb

Played over this to all intenses and purposes
Bb7sus chord the Pentatonic evokes a different
sound sensation. The C is now the 9th. The Eb
is now the 4th or 11th etc.
This is an excellent ‘inside’ choice for suspend-
9 11 5 6 1
ed chords for the improvisor to use.

C minor Pentatonic relating to Abmajor

The minor Pentatonic starting on the 3rd of
major 7th chord is a very beautiful sound.
All the notes are colourful and bright.
The major 6th, 7th and 9th are featured.
The Tonic and 4th are left out.
3 5 6 7 9

C minor Pentatonic relating to Eb/G

Ebmajor is the relative major to C minor.
So the C is the 6th. The Eb is now the Tonic,
the F is the 2nd , G is the 3rd and Bb the 5th
of Eb.
The sound is somewhat ‘pastoral’
6 1 2 3 5
and gentle and Folk like if it is possible
describe sounds with words.

C minor Pentatonic relating to F-9

Over the F-7 the IV minor chord in C minor
the minor Pentatonic works well, perhaps
it is a more homogenous choice than
the F- pentatonic as well.
The reason is context.
5 b7 1 9 11
Playing C minor Pentatonic over F-7
highlights the beautiful 9th and 11.

C minor Pentatonic relating to Ebadd9/Db

Eb add9 over Db is actually a way of express-
ing a Db major 7 b5 chord with the 6th and the
9th.
Here the C-7 is featuring the ‘tensions’
of the chord. The 9th, the b5 and the 6th.
maj7 9 3 b5 6
This is a very cool group of notes to play
on top of a Major 7b5 chord.
