"of Oxalate
:Aim
To gain some familiarity with redox chemistry through analysis of an oxalate
sample.

:Points to discuss
It is necessary to heat the solution gently because this reaction proceeds .1
.slowly at room temperature

5C2O42– (aq) + 2MnO4– (aq) + 16H+ (aq) → 10CO2 (g) + 8H2O (l) + 2Mn2+ (aq) .2

The solution is colorless before the end point, and that refers to the production of
the manganese(II) ions. At the end point and after it the solution will has the
color of pink or purple and that refers to the excess permanganate ions which
.have an intensely purple color

:The molar ration between the reagents is 5:2 as below .3

x mol C2O42– = 2× mol MnO4 5

.Permanganate ion MnO4– is a very strong oxidizing agent .4

:The experiment is divided into two parts .5

A) Standardization of KMnO4 Solution

B) The Determination of Oxalate in Unknown

:Errors and sources of errors

In the first part of the experiment the standard deviation = 1.17 x 10 ^-3 which
shows that the molarity we obtained = 0.0182 M is very close to the real
.value

In the second part of the experiment the standard deviation= 2.72 which
shows that there are a small percentage of errors due the titration and due
.the three trails

:Conclusion
In the end of this experiment we could determine by the titration between
the potassium permanganate and the sodium oxalate and by using the molar
ratio 5:2 the molarity of the potassium permanganate and it was equal to
.0.0182

We also could determine the percentage of the oxalate in an unknown and it

.% was equal to 44.2
