Unit 5. Introduction to Heat Transfer

Problem #1:
What is the temperature of the water initially at 10°C after it is heated for 4 min? The mass
and specific heat of the liquid water and teapot is 900 g and 4.18 kJ/kg.K, and 400 kg and 0.7
kJ/kg.K respectively. The teapot is equipped with a 1200-W electric heating element inside.
Disregard any heat loss for the teapot.

.
Problem #2:
Water is heated in an insulated, constant diameter tube by a 3.5-kW electric resistance
heater. If the water enters at 0.3 kg/s which leaves at 80°C, determine its temperature before it
enters the tube.

Unit 5. Introduction to Heat Transfer

Problem #3:
A 5 x 5 x 8 m room initially at 15°C is to be heated by a 5 kW electrical resistance heater
placed in a short duct in the room. The local atmospheric pressure is 98 kPa. The room is losing
heat steadily to the outside at a rate of 200 kJ/min. A 300-W fan circulates the air steadily through
the duct and the electric heater at an average mass flow rate of 50 kg/min. The duct can be
assumed to be adiabatic, and there is no air leaking in or out of the room. How many minutes will
it take for the room to reach an average temperature of 25°C?

Problem #4:
Determine the thermal conductivity of a material of thickness 30 cm with inner and outer
surfaces of 5 x 7 m and maintained at temperatures of 26°C and 8°C, respectively when the rate
of heat transfer through the wall is 3.570 kW. Identify the type of material.

Unit 5. Introduction to Heat Transfer

Problem #5:
An aluminum pan with a flat bottom has a diameter of 20 cm and thickness 0.4 cm. If the
inner and outer surface of the bottom of the pan 105°C and 107°C respectively, determine the
rate of heat transfer in the pan?

Problem #6:
The pipe transporting steam is located in a power plant at 20°C with inside diameter of 6
cm and length of 15 m, and has a uniform pipe surface temperature of 100°C. If the temperature
drop between the inlet and exit of the pipe is 29°C and the heat transfer coefficient as a result of
convection between the pipe surface and the surrounding is 160 W/m 2. °C, determine the volume
flow rate of the steam inside the pipe.

Unit 5. Introduction to Heat Transfer

Problem #7:
An electric current of 6 A passing through a resistor has a measured voltage of 6 V across
the resistor. The resistor has a uniform temperature of 90°C and the room air temperature is 25°C.
If the resistor is cylindrical with a diameter of 2.5 cm, determine its length. Assume that heat
transfer by radiation is negligible and heat transfer coefficient is 33.6 W/m 2. °C.

Problem #8:
If the surface temperature of the person is 27°C in a large room having walls, determine
the temperature of the wall in °C if the rate of heat loss from that person by radiation is 120W.
The exposed surface area of the person is 1.4 m 2.
