COURSE SYLLABUS

Couse Title: STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND BUSINESS POLICY


Course Code: MGT 45
Credit Units: 3

Course Description: This is an integration course that illustrates to the management students the interrelationships among the functional
areas of business i.e. Marketing, Operations and Finance. It gets the student involved in the analysis and development of a firm’s strategy
starting with coming up of the vision-mission statements, environmental and competitive analysis and adoption of the proper strategy for the firm to
thrive in the face of competition. Composed of nine modules, the course inculcates on the student the need for this strategy to be in consonance
in the core values of JRU and the principles of good corporate governance and social responsibility.

Pre-requisites: Mgt 21/Organization and Management


Placement: 4th year 1st Semester

The graduates of the BSBA program are able to:


1.   Excel in their profession/career utilizing the knowledge acquired in the Business Administration program;
2.    Become effective collaborators and innovators in business administration, applying professional/technical skills and competencies to
make a positive impact on society; and
3.    Be engaged in life-long learning and professional development trough self-study, continuing education, or graduate and professional
studies.

After completion of the program, the graduate of the BSBA- Major in Management shall be able to:

A. Perform the basic functions of management such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling
B. Apply the basic concepts of each functional area of business (Human Resources, Marketing, Production Operation and Finance)in
analyzing and crafting a company’s strategy.
C.     Select the proper decision making tools to and creatively and ethically confront and address solve business
D.     Express oneself clearly and effectively with stakeholders in oral or written form using information and communication technology
(ICT) skills.
E.     Demonstrate social responsibility with high personal moral and ethical standard

Course Requirements: Passing score in all learning activities. An analysis of a company’s strategy chosen by each group and
presented to the faculty on-line should a face-to-face presentation still not feasible. The paper should start with the company’s
background followed by the analysis of the company’s vision-mission statements, environmental analysis using PESTEL, Industry
Analysis using Porter’s Five Forces framework, Company Analysis using SWOT/TOWS, product analysis using the Boston Consulting
Group Model, culminating with the firm’s chosen business strategy. Considering the present circumstances, the groups may get their
needed information from published sources. The sources of all these however should be properly cited.
