NUTRITION AND DIET THERAPY LABORATORY ACTIVITY NO. 5

NUTRITION ACROSS LIFESPAN

INTRODUCTION
The human body undergoes physiologic changes as it grows and develops. As these
changes occur, the needs of the body varies. Like for instance the needs of a pregnant women
may differ from that of a non-gravid clients. Likewise, the needs of older adults may also differ
from that of a middle-aged adult.
It is important for health practitioners to be aware of these varying needs of different
population groups in order to assist them in a health growth, development, puerperium and
aging.
At the end of this activity, learners should have:
1. Determined the nutritional needs of clients across the lifespan.
2. Calculated the caloric needs of clients across the lifespan.
3. Prepared a meal plan of clients across the lifespan.

Situation 1: Ginger, a 32 y/o woman , stands 5'4" weighs 130lbs before she got pregnant to her
3rd child. She is now in her 2nd trimester. She works as a supervisor in a mall. She makes her
rounds twice a day within the mall to check.on the employees. She prefers eating fish and
vegetables so brings her.own food at work. She has stopped drinking soda 5 years ago. At
home, she still tends to her usual chores at home like cooking and doing the laundry.

I. Following the steps in estimating the desirable body weight (DBW) discussed in the lecture
portion, calculate your total energy allowance (TEA).
1. Calculate IBW/ DBW.
Ador Dionisio’s Method Tannhauser’s Method
LABORATORY MANUAL NUTRITION AND DIET THERAPY – MMSU CHS 2

Height: 5 feet= 100lbs Height= 5’4” = 64 inches x 2.54

4in x 2= 8lbs = 162.56cm
100+8=108lbs
162.56-100
Age: 32x2= 64 62.56 x 0.10= 6.256
64/5= 12.8 62.56-6.256
=56.304
108lbs+12.8lbs= 120.8lbs =56.30kg
120.8lbs/2.2
=54.9090kg
=54.91kg

Answer 54.91 kg Answer 56.30 kg

2. Basal needs (Ador Dionisio) = 0.9 kcal x 54.91 kg x 24 hours= 1186.06 kcal

Basal needs (Tannhauser’s) = 0.9 kcal x 56.30 kg x 24 hours= 1216.08 kcal

3. Estimate physical activities (Ador DIonisio’s) = 1186.06 kcal x 0.50= 593.03 kcal
Estimate physical activities (Tannhauser’s) = 1216.08 kcal x 0.50= 608.04 kcal

4. Total Energy Allowance (Ador Dionisio’s) = 1186.06 kcal + 593.03 kcal= 1779.09 kcal

Total Energy Allowance (Tannhauser’s) = 1216.08 kcal + 608.04 kcal= 1824.12 kcal

The client is a pregnant woman, therefore I will add an additional of 340 kcal since it is
the energy requirement needed for a pregnant woman on her 2nd trimester in a day.
Ador Dionisio’s= 1779.09 kcal + 340 kcal= 2119.09 kcal
Tannhauser’s= 1824.12 kcal + 340 kcal= 2164.12 kcal
5. Distribute the total energy allowance among carbohydrates, proteins, and fats as
follows:

Carbohydrates: 50%-70%
Proteins: 10%-15%
Fats: 20%-30%

Ador Dionisio’s:
Carbohydrates= 2119.09 kcal x 0.65= 1377.41 kcal

Proteins = 2119.09 kcal x 0.15= 317.86 kcal

Fats = 2119.09 kcal x 0.20= 423.82 kcal

Tannhauser’s:
Carbohydrates= 2164.12 kcal x 0.65= 1406.68 kcal
LABORATORY MANUAL NUTRITION AND DIET THERAPY – MMSU CHS 3

Proteins = 2164.12 kcal x 0.15= 324.62 kcal

Fats = 2164.12 kcal x 0.20= 432.82 kcal

6. Calculate the number of grams of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Ador Dionisio’s:
Carbohydrates= 1377.41 kcal/4= 344.35 grams
Proteins = 317.86 kcal/4= 79.47 grams
Fats = 423.82 kcal/9= 47.09 grams

Tannhauser’s:
Carbohydrates= 1406.68 kcal/4= 351.67 grams
Proteins = 324.62 kcal/4= 81.16 grams
Fats = 432.82 kcal/9= 48.09 grams

Their school nurse often advise him about his diet but he says he keeps eating but doesn’t gain
any weight. He is often called “lampayatot” which bothers him a lot.

Total Energy Allowance (Tannhauser’s) = 1680.48 kcal + 504.14 kcal= 2184.62 kcal

The recommended caloric requirement for a male age 13 years old is 2279 kcal/day. The
client has the total energy allowance below the recommended so in order to meet required
nutritional intake, let’s add an additional of 435.39 kcal
Total Energy Allowance (Ador Dionisio’s) = 1418.16 kcal + 425.45 kcal= 1843.61 kcal +

Situation 3: Maria Buban is a 60 year old woman with mild mental retardation. She lives in an
independent support living arrangement and she works at a bakery in a supported employment
arrangement. Her height is 127 cm and she weighs 205 pounds. Maria has never been involved in
regular exercise. Her only regular exercise is her walk down the street to the convenience store and her
two-block walk from the bus stop to the bakery where she works. One of the activities she does like is
going to parks. Anything that involves being outside seems to be fun for her.

I. Following the steps in estimating the desirable body weight (DBW) discussed in the lecture
portion, calculate your total energy allowance (TEA).
1. Calculate IBW/ DBW.
