ASSESSMENT 6.

1 (Part 2)

Problem Solving. Solve the following problems. Show all pertinent solutions. No immediate
rounding. Round off final answers to three decimal places.

1. Suppose that the random variable X has 4 mass points. Give the value of c such that the following
is a valid pmf for X. (1 pt)
x -3 -1 1 5
p(x) 1/12 1/8 c/24 1/2

2. Consider the random experiment of tossing a fair die twice.

A. Specify the sample space of the random experiment. (1 pt)
B. Define S as the sum (first toss + second toss) of the dots in the two rolls. Construct the
PMF of the random variable S. (2 pts)
C. Use the PMF to determine the probability that
i. the sum of the tosses is at least 6. (1 pt)
ii. the sum of tosses is at least -2. (1 pt)
iii. the sum of tosses is at most 3. (1 pt)

3. The cumulative distribution function (CDF) of a continuous random variable Y is as follows:

Use the CDF to compute for the following probabilities: (1 pt each)

A. P(Y ≤ -1.6)
B. P( Y ≥ 0.75)
C. P(Y > 2.3)
D. P(-0.5 ≤ Y < 14)
E. P(1.5 < Y ≤ 15.2)
