ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We, the student trainees would like to take the opportunity to thank and
express my deep sense of gratitude to Dr. S. Raja Samuel the Principal of
Madras School of Social Work for providing valuable guidance at all stages of
the fieldwork.

We are thankful to Dr. J.S Gunavathy HOD of PG Department of Social


Work has co-operated with the student trainees continuously & guided them for
facilitating this session and gave the student trainees an opportunity to learn and
acquire skills from the industry end.

We would also like to thank Mr. Haresh Savitha Head HR & Admin and
Mr. Shiva Sankar M, Assistant manager - HR of Adani Kattpalli port private
limited and who in spite of his busy schedule has given insights for the students
to practice and understand the HR functions and the reality of industry
expectations in the current trend.

We owe our wholehearted thanks and appreciation to the entire staffs &
students of the MSW Aided department, MSSW for their co-operation and
assistance during the session.

INTRODUCTION:
The main aim of the study visit is to experience the reality of the industries in the current trends
and to understand their policies as well as operations. As a budding HR trainee should
mandatorily undergo visits to different industries and improve their skills on observation,
motivation, leadership, decision- making, team work, etc., which would be useful in their
career. The Study visits were facilitated by the fieldwork supervisor Dr.J.S.Gunavathy.

The session started by 10.30 AM in the morning of 27th October 2020 and the outlines of the
organization were explained by Mr. Shiva Shankar, Assistant HR manager and the question
and answer session was conducted by Mr. Haresh Savitha Head – HR of Adani Kattpalli port
private limited.

ABOUT:
Adani group is a private business organization founded in 1988 by Gautam Adani, the
Chairman. The Group's diverse businesses include energy, resources, logistics, agribusiness,
real estate, financial services, defence and aerospace.
Adani Kattupalli Port Private Limited (AKPPL) is a modern port in north Chennai and a tailor-
made alternative for cargo owners over the congested Chennai port. It is also an Authorised
Economic Operator (AEO) offering a wide basket of service such as a dedicated yard for Direct
Port Delivery clearance, Direct Port Entry for factory stuffed/self-sealed export-laden
containers and flexible carting. It is well connected to cargo clusters, national highways and
container freight stations.
Kattupalli Port is known for its customer centric approach by providing higher productivity,
innovation logistics solutions, faster turnaround of vessels and faster evacuation of containers
from the Port.
o Alternative gateway to congested Chennai port
o Located outside city limits ensuring quick turnaround time
o Seamless connectivity to 4 national highways
o Direct services to Far East, Middle East and Southeast Asia
o EDI facility for logging service requests, vessel & container status updates & billing
With deep draft berths and multipurpose terminals, the port efficiently handles the largest bulk
carriers in the world. The port has covered and open storage areas with enormous capacity.
Excellent cargo evacuation and receiving infrastructure support smooth cargo movement in
and out of the port. They also expertise in successfully handling over-sized and overweight

o Export at handling diversified cargo like Fertilizer, Agri, Mines & Minerals, Steel &
Project Cargo
o The terminal infrastructure at the port is capable of simultaneously handling multiple
vessels of different class.
o Uninterrupted and smooth operations across the entire terminal.
o Gate complex with 6 lanes ensure faster turn-around time of vehicles.
Terminal is equipped with Direct Port Delivery warehouse within the container yard to provide
seamless movements for AEO & DPD consignments. Port also has an off-dock CFS with
45,000 square feet of closed warehouse.
• Terminal is equipped with truck lay bay to park 90 trailers to ensure there is no queue
inside the terminal.
• Wide internal roads and vast back up area enables
Kattupalli Port is an all-weather port with direct berthing facilities. It is a deep draft port
capable of handling vessels of draft up to 15.0 meters. The port presently has three berths,
Berth-1 with length 353 meters, and Berth-2 & 3 combined length total 654 meters in a
line. The port is capable of handling:
• Container vessel up to 390 meters in length.
• Car carriers up to 230 meters length.
• Bulk carriers up to 289 meters in length.
• Tankers up to 275 meters in length.
The port being an all-weather port with no loss of operational days, makes it a port of choice
for trade. Kattupalli port also boasts of superior support infrastructure and assets which
includes modern powerful Tugs and very experienced pilots. This ensure uninterrupted and
smooth operations 24x7 in all environments at the port.

BUISINESS SERVICES:
The competitive advantage of the organization is an integrated yet independent business model
since they manage their own resources, logistics, and energy through power plant. It is an
independent organization that manages everything from the scratch to the end.

• Coal: Mine Development and operation:


It is the largest mine developer and operator in India and involves land acquisition,
exploration, develop, plan, manage and operate mining process, also provide logistics
solution and they provide direct employment to nearly 3200 people.
• Bunkering business:
It is the largest bunker suppliers in India and at certain ports outside India and has
dedicated infrastructure with barges and tankages and pipelines at berth for bunkering
operations. Tie-ups with reputed suppliers at ports in Sri-Lanka, Fujairah, Singapore,
South Africa, China, Europe and East Africa. It has a strong team across India and
presence in Singapore and Dubai.
• Global logistics through Maritime Transport:
Seaports continue to be a crucial link for access to the global marketplace. The volume
of cargo moved by ocean transportation is projected to dramatically increase over the
coming decades. Thus, the focus is on strengthening of infrastructure to meet the future
demands and that will create more jobs, alleviate congestion, reduce pollution and
deliver prosperity.
• Adani port presence has about 388 current capacity and 596 proposed capacity overall India
and in Tamil Nadu there are two ports where Kattupalli has current capacity of 18 and a
proposed capacity of 18 while the Ennore port has about 12 current capacity and 20
proposed capacity
• Integrated Infrastructure:
It offers land in Special Economic Zone, Domestic Tariff Area and Free trade and
Warehousing Zones with cluster-based zoning. It has excellent integrated utilities such
as power, water, CETP (Common Effluent Treatment Plant). Provides quality social
infrastructure facilities such as housing, education, healthcare and recreation and multi-
model connectivity with sea, air, rail and road linkages.
• Integrated Logistics Solutions:
It has Inland Container Depots at Patli, Gurgaon, Punjab and Rajasthan and is planning
for additional ICDs at locations across the country. Through railways it has licensed
container rake operator with 10 owned rakes and 12 leased rakes and about 300 kms
privately laid track length.
• Dredging:
The company own a total fleet of 16 dredgers and is the largest fleet of cutter suction
dredgers in India
• Shipping:
It has wholly-owned subsidiaries in Singapore and Panama to manage shipping and
freight operations and 4 cape size vessels
• Coal based Power Generation:
The company has operational power plants with installed capacity with a total of about
10440 MW, where power plant at Mundra, Gujarat being the highest contributor with
4620 MW.
• Renewable energy:
Solar PV manufacturing being the largest greenfield solar cell and module
manufacturing facility with capacity of 1.2 GW and has the worlds largest single
location solar power plant at Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu. It also has renewable wind energy
plant at 3 places in India.
• Gas distribution:
Through Indian Oil Adani Gas Pvt Ltd, the company has 50:50 joint venture with Indian
Oil corporation implementing CGD at Chandigarh, Allahabad, Ernakulam,
Udhamsingh Nagar, Panipat, Daman and Hubli-Dharwad.
• Grain Storage and Logistics Business:
They introduced first of its kind modern and scientific storage facilities in India and
ensures negligible losses, minimal human touch, and intact nutrition over a long period
of time. It is spread over 13 locations with private railway sidings, transporting grains
in bulk from grain-producing states to consumption areas with a current total storage
capacity of 1 MT is set to rise to 2 MT by 2021.
• Education:
o Adani institute of Infrastructure, Ahmedabad – offering full time programs in
Infrastructure management and Engineering
o Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhuj – Unique Public private
partnership venture between the Adani Education & Research Foundation and the
Government of Gujarat.

‘Sabbash’ to motivate the employees.
• To support the mental health of the employee the organization has a counsellor available
24*7 for stress, hypertension and such problems which are kept confidential.
• The groom young youth program hires graduate from different disciplines and trains them
over different process. While the existing employees are given the opportunity to opt for
different positions under different locations for their learning and growth.
• They have Corporate health centre, gym, healthy food menu, yoga room facilities inside
their premises

Question and Answer session:


o The organization has evolved over three decades and always learns from different
services and locations through which they constantly redefine their policies to strive for
better efficiency and the HR policies depends on the nature of the business process.
o The company stands unique from the competitors by its inclusiveness of all the people
of the organization and providing the opportunities for them to move positions within
the organizations so that the employees can develop themselves and the organization.
o Though the organization did not recruit any new employee in the past 7 months due to
the pandemic Covid-19 and the business was not on full swing, it did not stop the
business completely and they managed to do minimal business to satisfy their
customers end.
o Also, the company did retrench or lay off any of its employees during the lockdown
period.
o The organization has not opted for outsourcing as of now, but considers to do so in the
future which may increase the job opportunities.
o They also sponsor for group level marathon twice a year
