Competency Statement 2
To advance physical and intellectual competence
Functional Area 4:
Physical: Encouraging physical activities in the classroom whether indoors or outdoors is so
important because it helps children develop their gross motor and fine motor skills. On the
playground there is a variety of materials such as balls, tricycles, chalk, and the little red cars for
the children to play with. The children also have plenty of space to run, jump, climb, and hop.
On the days that we cannot go outside I plan activities that we can do inside. The children love
“Listen and Move” where the children listen and move according to the sounds they hear. They
also like to dance to Jack Hartman’s music I also mix it up and do yoga with them and to
promote children’s fine motor skills I have puzzles, paint, playdough, toys with zippers, buttons,
and clasps.

Functional Area 5:
Cognitive: To promote cognitive learning in my classroom I make sure that I offer the children
plenty of developmentally appropriate activities. I plan activities that are hands-on, engaging,
and meaningful to them. Children are natural explorers and are ready to learn. I have materials
from nature in the science center so the children can, so it is important to nurture and
encourage them in a positive manner.

Functional Area 6:
Communication: I believe that when children are introduced to literacy at an early age helps
them develop better verbal and auditory skills. That is one of the reasons why I read to my class
daily, sometimes a few times a day. The reading center is cozy and full of a variety of books
such as picture books, multi-cultural books, and rhyming books. I also interact with children
during centers; I ask open-ended questions and listen to how they communicate with me and
their friends. I love to hear them talk amongst themselves because they sound like little adults
and you can tell by the vocabulary they use, that they are read to and spoken to a lot. They will
also learn from each other, so I like to put the ones that talk with the ones that are shy.

Functional Area 7:
Creative: It is amazing what children come up with when you allow them to be creative, not just
in the art center but in everyday activities. The children are provided with different color
construction paper, glue, paint, crayons, safety scissors and other creative materials in the art
center. During music, the children have a choice of playing musical instruments, dance and sing
or all the above. They love making up songs and singing songs in their native language which I
encourage, it gives the kids the opportunity to learn a different language and have a sense of
community.
CS2 a:
Gross motor: The activity that I chose is a game called “Chalk Jumping Shapes”. It helps the
children with the development of their large muscles. The way that it is played is, I draw
different shapes on the concrete but not too far away from each other that the kids cannot get
to. I draw a card and show the child, he/she then must jump to that shape, we repeat this until
the child reaches the end. This activity will also help them learn their shapes.

CS2 b:
Science / sensory: Science is great way for children to develop their cognitive skills. The activity
that I chose is one that I have used before and the kids love it. I split a white carnation in half
and place each side in a different vase, I then place a few drops of a different food coloring in
each vase. The carnation will eventually change to that color. The process takes a few days but
that is the best part because it will give me chance to ask the kids open-ended question such as
“what do you think will happen next?” This activity will open conversation amongst them,
problem-solving, math skills, and it is part of nature. After the activity is over, the kids can take
the flower home and talk about the project with their family.

CS2 c:
Creative Arts: I promote it in my classroom. This activity will encourage children to use different
materials to create whatever they want. I will place a basket on the table where there will only
be a few children so each can have enough material and space. Inside the basket will be glue,
pieces of colored tissue paper, pipe cleaner, and leaves and flowers from the playground. I will
also provide unusual stamps that I made out potatoes and celery stocks and different color
paint, feathers, and paint brushes. I will place construction paper on the table, put the smocks
on the children and let them go to town it. This will also help with their fine motor skills.

CS2 d: To promote communication/language development among all children, including dual

language learners I will read to my student daily, provide a variety of books, play different kinds
of age-appropriate music, provide activities that will encourage students to develop listening
and comprehension skills. I will label material with written words and pictures. I will talk with
the children at eye level and have meaningful conversations with them. For my dual language
learners, I will pair them up with a friend that will help them learn English. I will communicate
with the parents daily and ask them to provide me with words in their native language that will
help me communicate with the student. I will build a positive, warm, and nurturing relationship
with them so that they feel safe and less anxious.
