What Is It
The fundamental unit of length in the metric system is the meter. To measure
small objects like the thickness of a book , a paper clip , or a microchip, use millimetres.
To measure longer objects , like the length of a pencil , or a book use centimeters .To
measure much longer lengths, like the length of a flagpole , or a piece of land , use
meters. To measure the distance between towns , use kilometres .
Illustrative Example 1
Suppose you were asked to measure a pencil . What are you going to do? Place the tip of the
pencil above the point of the ruler marked 0 , then read the measurement above the other end
of the object. Then the measure of the pencil to the nearest cm is 4. On the other hand , the
measure of the pencil to the nearest mm is 40 .

5
What Is It
Measuring cups and graduated cylinders are some of the measuring devices
used to measure the volume or a capacity of a specific container.
Volume is the amount of space an object contains or occupies. The volume
of a container is considered to be the capacity of the container. This is measured by the
number of cubic units or the amount of fluid it can contain and not the amount of
space the container occupies.

Activity 2 : Tell Me, What Time Is It Now ?

Directions :Tell what time is it now. Write your correct reading of time below each clock.

What Is It
Primitive men used to tell time by the position of the sun , the stars and
the moon , and the behavior of animals . They used the sundial, the water clocks , and the
hour glass for hundred of years until the invention of the mechanical clocks , the stately

6
grandfather clocks , the quartz and digital watches , and most recently , the atomic
clocks.
Currently , there are two types of notation in stating time, the 12-hr notation
standard time) or the 24-hr notation ( military or astronomical time ). Standard time makes
use of a.m. and p.m. to distinguish between the time from 12 midnight to 12 noon ( a.m.
or ante meridiem) and from 12 noon to 12 midnight (p.m. or post meridiem).Military time
prevents this ambiguity by using the 24-hour notation where the counting of the time
continues all the way to 24.
Illustrative Example 1 :
Express the following to military notation ;
a. 2:00 p.m. – 1400 hrs.
b. 9:00 a.m. _ 900 hrs.

Angle protractor vertex 45 o 180o 90o
1.) An has two sides that meet at a point.
2.) Angle are measured with a .
3.) There are degrees on a protractor.
4.) There are degrees in a right angle.
5.) The common point when two sides of the angle meet is called .
7
What Is It

Angles derived from the Latin word angulus which means corner , an angle
is defined as a figure formed when two rays share a common endpoint called vertex .
Angles are measured by either degree or radian measures.
The measurement of an angle is the amount of opening between the sides
of the angle. An angle with the greater opening has the greater measure.
The figure below shows angle ABC (in symbols, ∠ABC). The vertex of ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 is B.
Rays are BA and BC are the sides of an angle.

Angles are measured by means of protractor. A protractor is a semi-circular

device marked off in units of degrees from o to 180. The unit used in measuring angles is
called degree.
To find the measure of an angle , place the center point ofthe protractor
over the vertex of the angle. Align the mark labeled 0 on either side of the scale
with one side of the angle. Then read the scale where the other side of the angle falls. This
has been done for ∠𝐵𝑋𝐶 as shown below.

Using the inner scale of the protractor, we can see that ∠𝑋 is a 40 degree
angle. Thus, the degree measure of ∠𝐵𝑋𝐶 𝑖𝑠 40, written as m∠𝐵𝑋𝐶= 40O.
Illustrative Example 1 :Use a protractor to find the measure of each angle below.

Activity 2: Encircle Me!
Directions: Choose the best estimate of temperature to the nearest degree.
1. a normal body temperature ; 10oC 20oC 37oC
2. a rainy day; 60oF 15oF 20oF
3. boiling water ; 100oC 75oC 50oC

What Is It
Temperature is the measurement of the degree of hotness or coldness of an object
or substance. The metric system uses the degree Celsius to measure temperature . It is
named after the Swedish astronomer, Andres Celsius , who devised the Celsius scale in
1742 . Originally called centigrade, two reference temperatures are used:
The freezing point of water is 0o C.
The boiling point of water is 100oC.
A metric thermometer used to measure temperature is divided in intervals
between the freezing point and boiling point.
Illustrative Example A:
Convert 27oC to degree Fahrenheit
Solution: ℉ = 1.8 ℃ +32ᵒ Use the formula

= 1.8 (27) +32 Substitute oC with the given 27

= 48.6 +32 The product of 1.8 and 27 is 48.6 + 32

= 80.6℉ therefore , 27OC is equal to 80.6oF

Illustrative Example B:
Use the formula
Convert 68 ℉ 𝑡𝑜℃
℉−32°
Solution: ℃ = Substitute the value of oF = 68,
1.8°
then subtract 68-32
68−32
=
1.8

Divide 36 by 1.8
36
=
1.8

= 20 ℃ therefore, 68oF is equal to 20.

What Is It

There are measurements which shows the relationship between two quantities. This
relationship can be expressed in the form of ratio.
Comparison in terms of quantity , quality , or prices make use of ratios. For
instance , in advertisements , customers look for better buys in terms of price and
quality. When forming a ratio of quantities of the same kind , make sure to use the
same unit of measure for each quantity.
Illustrative Examples:
A. A bag contains 3 kg. of grapes and 2 kg of lanzones.
What is the ratio of grapes to lanzones?
The ratio is written as 3:2 or 3.
