Title: Advanced Practice Role in Population Health
Course Number: N 6165 W
Course Description:
This course examines the philosophical, political, economic, ethical and legal frameworks of advanced nursing practice
roles from both a current practice and historical perspective. Students study current social, professional, legislative, and
technological trends in health care as they relate to advanced practice nursing. The student is encouraged to develop
the skills needed for role assumption and leadership within the health care delivery system and explore key clinical,
legal, and ethical foundations/issues which impact advanced practice nursing. The course prepares advanced practice
nurses to incorporate population health, health promotion, and health education into practice.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student will have had the opportunity to:
1. Utilize scientific foundations and theoretical frameworks to analyze the advanced practice role. (M 1; E 1,2,4;

3. Describe how policies influence the structure and financing of health care, practice, and health outcomes

4. Examine the effect of legal and regulatory processes on nursing practice and health care delivery systems.

Method of Instruction:
This is an online course with faculty-facilitated modules and a variety of assignments aligned with the learning objectives
for the course.
Course Evaluation:
There are no tests. Your grade is based upon completion of weekly assignments. We grade assignments using either
points or percentage, but refer to this table for the percentage of your final grade each assignment contributes.

Late Policy:
Notify the primary faculty member of a module or section in advance via email if work may be late. Students should
discuss with faculty members any issues that would keep them from completing course work as scheduled Extra time for
completion of an assignment may be granted for student or family illness or emergencies. Points will be deducted for
late papers (5% per day).
Faculty will provide feedback on discussions and assignments within 1 week of the discussion close or assignment
submission respectively. On occasion responses may take longer due to other faculty obligations.
Technical Skills:
Students taking this course should be familiar with fundamental computer usage including: managing files, emailing,
working with basic software applications e.g. Microsoft Office as well as navigating, searching, and downloading in a
Web environment.

Academic Honesty:
Academic honesty is expected of students (refer to Policy S1020). “Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to
cheating, plagiarism….” An important skill for scholarly writing is to summarize and synthesize the ideas of many
authors into your own words and then appropriately cite the contributing authors. There are many forms of plagiarism,
but essentially they all boil down to lack of skills in synthesizing and paraphrasing. Below is a brief video with a short
overview on the 10 different types of plagiarism. The website has many resources for learning how to avoid plagiarism.

Any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty in this course may be subject to disciplinary action. The student
