Section - A
1. Read the passage given below and answer the following question:
Phenols are the organic compounds containing benzene ring bonded to a hydroxyl group.
They are also known as carbolic acids. Phenols react with active metals like sodium,
potassium to form phenoxide. This reaction of phenol with metals indicates its acidic nature.
Phenols react with aqueous NaOH to produce phenoxide ions. This indicates that the acidity
of phenols is higher in comparison to the alcohol and water molecules.
The following questions are multiple choice questions .Choose the most appropriate answer:
(i) Phenol is less acidic than
(a) Ethanol (b) o-nitrophenol
(c) o-methylphenol (d) o-methoxyphenol

(ii) Which of the following is most acidic?

(a) Benzyl alcohol (b) Cyclohexanol
(c) Phenol (d) m-Chlorophenol

(iii) What is the hybridisation of C in phenol to which -OH group is attached

(a) sp (b) sp2 (c) sp3 (d) none

(iv )Choose the wrong statement

(a) phenol is acidic due to polar natue of -OH group
(b) An electron withdrawing group increase the electron density on oxygen
(c) An electron releasing group increases the electron density on oxygen
(d) Alcohols are less acidic than phenol.

2. Read the passage given below and answer the following question:
Earlier the term’ colloid’ was used for a category of substances. However later, the term
colloidal state of matter was preferred. Colloidal dispersions have been classified into
different types depending upon the physical state of the dispersed phase and the dispersion
medium or the nature of interactions between them or the nature of the colloidal particles.
They are prepared in the industry or in the laboratory by a number of methods and then
purified. Their physical properties have also been studied in detail. Hardy and Schulze made
a substantial contribution in studying the coagulation of the colloids. The protective action of
lyophilic colloids was studied by Zsigmondy and he introduced term called ‘Gold number’.
In these questions a statement of assertion followed by a statement of reason is given. Choose
the correct answer out of the following choices.
a) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is correct explanation for
assertion.
b) Assertion and reason both are correct statements but reason is not correct explanation for
assertion.
c) Assertion is correct statement but reason is wrong statement.
d) Assertion is wrong statement but reason is correct statement.
