2. Give an example of a point group.
3. What is the use of point group?
4. Can you say what will be the point group of a linear molecule from the flow
chart?
5. Can you say from the flow chart, when C ∞v changes to D ∞h ?
6. From the flow chart can you say the characteristics of the molecule with I h
point group?
7. State the characteristics of O h symmetry from the flow chart.
8. Deduce from the flow chart the various symmetry elements that should be
present in a C 2v molecule.
9. How will you derive the point group of PCl 5 ?

Answers

1. Symmetry elements present in a molecule generate symmetry operations,

which form a symmetry group. This group is called a point group.
2. C 2v . It means that the molecule contains one C 2 axis and two σ v planes.
3. It is the short hand notation of a molecule. Spectroscopic properties of
molecules can be predicted.
4. C ∞
5. If point of inversion ‘i’ is present in a linear molecule, the point group
becomes D ∞h . Otherwise, it becomes C ∞v .
6. Molecule should not be linear; six C 5 axis of symmetry will be present;
center of symmetry will be present.
7. Molecule should not be linear; C 5 axis will not be present; three C 4 axis of
symmetry will be present and the molecule will have a center of symmetry

8. Molecule should not be linear; C 2 axis will be present; two σ v planes will
be present.
9. Step 1: shape of the molecule is obtained. It is trigonal bipyramid
Step 2: The highest order of the axis of symmetry is found out. It is C 3 in
the molecule.
Step 3: Find out whether there are any C 2 axes perpendicular to this C 3
axis. Yes, there are three. Then the symbol becomes D.
Step 4: Find out whether there is any mirror plane perpendicular to the
principal C 3 axis. Yes in this case.
Hence the point group is D 3h .
