[Assignment # 5]
Introduction
Amid the deadly Corona Virus and global community combating it, it is difficult to
predict the future of the world. However, the perspective of the one on the pandemic
and survival in the crippling world economy needs to reflect unprecedented level of
maturity and vigilance. The precautionary measures recommended by the World Health
Organization (WHO) and other local and non-local institution in the health industry
needs to be implemented at the next level, specifically the practice of social distancing.
Though containing the global pandemic at home is undoubtedly one of the most serious
challenges this world has ever confronted, yet it is pertinent to win this battle. In fact, it
is not just about winning this battle, but also what lies in the aftermath. The economic
and social impact of the outbreak is huge for a human race that has been lurching from
one crisis to another. Therefore, my take on the outbreak is more or less the same as
endorsed by experts and analysts to practice precautionary measures, national action
plan and devise response mechanism to survive economic losses during and after the
pandemic.
Despite the need to combat the outbreak at global level, the different countries also
need to plan and develop strategy at state level as per their socio cultural landscapes. In
fact, my perspective also manifests traces of the Pakistan’s socio-religious concerns.
Pakistan is now effectively in a state of lockdown as the battle against the coronavirus
outbreak enters a critical phase. A curfew appears imminent in parts of the country,
given the exponential rise in the number of cases. The military has been deployed in aid
of the civilian administration to maintain law and order. But flattening the curve of the
infection requires a much greater effort and more resources. The nation needs to come
up with unprecedented level of maturity in all walks of life either it is politics, religion or
any other social matter.
Ethical aspect of this Covid-19 disease should not something evading spotlight in the
moment of such peculiar crisis. The virus has now spread to communities largely
because of our failure to take timely measures to contain its spread. Then there is the
lack of awareness and certain social practices that have led to a spike in the number of
cases. Religious congregations continued, despite the warnings. Such gatherings are the
biggest source of spread of the infection all across the world. Ethical factor of the
pandemic remained elusive in the preliminary phase of the outbreak. However, once
Page 2 of 4
the fight against the pandemic gained momentum, it is something in the intellectual
debate. Since Human contact, anywhere and everywhere in the world, now carries the
burden of contagion. Those who live alone but rely on visits and interaction with friends
and family members are also facing a long period of adjustment. To preserve life, these
interactions must be sacrificed at least in the short term, leaving relationships
transformed. The ethical approach, besides social distancing, may also need to be
adopted in other aspects of human activity. In such crisis, economic difficulties during
and after the outbreak always remain in the spotlight. In fact, the situation aggravates
out of the unfair practices such as unethical profiteering out of the pandemic and
hoarding of the medical and other daily life essentials. Therefore, the ethical fault lines
in combating Corona virus like disease not only need to be identified bit also rectified.
In less than a month, Italy has gone from having only three cases of the
coronavirus to having the highest number of cases and deaths in the world,
with approximately 8000 deaths and at least 42000 of people affected .The
number of cases rose by 50% on March 8 alone. Italy also faces an above average
mortality rate of 4%. Since the virus spread undetected, some officials believe this
is the reason for such a high number of cases in the country. It is also speculated
that the virus was propagated throughout the country with state authorities
being negligent towards the issue and it was merely dealt with ordinary routine
influenza mechanism, resulting in comparative greater number of deaths. Some
experts also point towards the elderly populace of the Italy. Since the over aged
people are more vulnerable to the Covid-19 because of relative weak immune
system, mortality rate in Italy is higher than any other country combating the
virus. Some experts also mentioned that Italy is experiencing higher mortality
rate because only critical suspects and in Italy undergo the testing, which is surely

not enough. Another factor which might has been contributing towards higher
number of deaths is because of poor quality index in several cities in the northern
Italy. Since the Covid-19 is more like a respiratory syndrome, a population with
poor respiratory conditions is always at high risks of such viral infections.
Doctors in Italy are at the front line of the COVID-19 outbreak response and as such are
exposed to hazards that put them at risk of infection. First and foremost, they need to
make sure that their health care facilities and protocols are consistent with that of the
guidelines issued by the global watchdog on the pandemic, World health Organization.
The medical fraternity also needs to adopt effective prevention and control measures
during the outbreak. They need to make sure the rational use of personal protective
equipment. Similarly, water, sanitation and hygiene facilities at treatment need to be
consistently checked under the supervision of experts to curtail the spread of the
disease further.
Last but not the least, doctor community needs to ensure ethical practices in moments
of crisis. The unethical profiteering and other malpractices shall be avoided. The medical
fraternity also needs to line up against the myths and other uncertainties hindering the
fight against the deadly outbreak.
