What kind of a world does the poet envision? How has he brought to light the inequality in our
society?
In the poem, I Dream A World, the poet, Langston Hughes uses many personi ed
phrases and imageries to describe the inequalities faced in our society. The poet
envisions a world where everyone is treated equally no matter their race, gender or
colour. The main thematic concern is the racial boundaries that we humans are
building day by day.
The poet dreams a world where everyone is treated equally no matter who they are.
He uses a kinaesthetic imagery in the phrase, “no other man will scorn” to create an
image of the world where no one will disrespect anyone in the reader’s mind. Langston
also describes about his world where everyone is loved and cared for, something that
is not done in today’s world. He uses a personi ed phrase, “where love will bless the
Earth” to create this impact on the reader.

The poet has used many devices to describe the inequalities happening around us. He
talks about his world where everyone no matter their race, colour, gender,etc. has
access to a place without inequality, “A world I dream where black or white, whatever
race you be” The poet also uses the personi ed phrase, “where greed no longer saps
the world” to talk about the growing greediness in humans which is increasing the
inequalities in our society. The poet also uses the phrase, “where wretchedness will
hang its head and joy, like a pearl” to tell the readers that the misery some people are
facing should not be there and everyone should be joyful and happy.

in all, the poet has used many literary devices to describe the inequalities happening
in the world around us and also the idea that it is very hard to make this happen and
it is just a dream because we humans are increasing the inequalities ourselves.
