life. The world in the old days is completely different from now since hobbies, lifestyles,
and working styles all change over time. In 2017, there was an article about the world
change of NBN, in which there was a paragraph about changing hobbies in the past and
now, this passage has attracted the attention of many people. They are surprised at the
differences in hobbies of the old and current generations. Today we are going to talk
about this topic, that's how changing hobbies in the past and now. Before we get into the
main topic, we need to clarify some definitions.
What is a hobby?
A hobby is a regular activity or interest that is undertaken for pleasure, typically done
during one’s leisure time. Moreover, when people are free to do something they like,
they can take up a hobby. Apart from that, hobbies are practiced for interest and
enjoyment, rather than financial rewards, such as collecting, creative and artistic pursuits,
and sports. Furthermore, hobbies not only cost too little to give up on them, but we can
also find a way to earn money from a hobby.
Stamp collecting in the past used to be a very popular hobby, with people having the
habit of collecting valuable things since ancient times. But most people in the past were
too busy and too poor to buy expensive works of art or coins. When stamps appeared in
the 19th century, they were cheap and colorful and children started to keep them. In the
mid-20th century, stamp collecting was a popular pastime for both children and adults.
Not only stamps but many people in the past also had a hobby of collecting antiques or
coins, often they were people in the aristocracy. Nowadays, people still have a habit of
collecting things, but not stamps anymore, instead they collect goods. Some old people
still have the habit of collecting antiques.
In the 1950s and 60s, middle-class teenagers and younger often had no money to buy
toys, making their models of planes, boats, and cars. They proudly display them in their
bedroom or anywhere else their parents allow. Those models are usually made of wood
or plastic, with few moving parts. In Vietnam, in those years, children were often found
picking up trees and rocks to shoot birds or clay traps near river banks to carve statues.
Radio was a major hobby in the pre-internet era, where it used to be expensive to use cell
phones and landlines to talk to someone. They often use radio channels to transmit
information to others and often share music. Some people today still use the radio to talk
to their homeland and loved ones.
Hobbies like wood carving, juggling, dancing, singing, and painting are also very
popular.
People in the past also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and fishing. Now only the elders like
this because they have more free time.
One more thing, the aristocracy at that time had hobbies such as hunting, making tea,
playing with dolls. They also love to dance.
Hobbies nowadays
People now have less free time than ever. Most adults have to work from weekdays to
weekends, and children have to go to school, especially tutors.
Nowadays, human hobbies are usually confined to a mobile phone, and one of the main
hobbies of young people today is spending hours on social media, or maybe sitting in
front of a computer screen to play games or watch movies.
However, there are still some outdoor hobbies that are very popular with young people
today. For example, street dancing or skateboarding, if you regularly go to the pedestrian
street, you will find a lot of dance clubs here. Or like skateboarding, today's young
people have a very special love for it.
As in the past and now, singing and drawing are still most people's hobbies
Many parents today also orient their children to learn music, and their hobbies are
usually playing the piano, the guitar.
Reading is also very popular. Reading is suitable for both adults and young people. They
can also compose their own stories on websites such as Wattpad, lofter, or JJ.
Even if our hobbies change from generation to generation, one thing that will never
change is that our hobbies will make us feel more comfortable and happier. However,
because of the stress of life and being too busy, many people do not have the free time to
do their hobbies. And in the future, we may not be able to make time for hobbies because
of the same reasons.
