• Recapitulation
Introduction
Basics of pH

• Negative…base 10 logarithm of H+ concentration in

moles/L
• Molar concentration
• pH = -log10 [H+]
• If [H+] = 10-7…pH = 7
• If [H+] = 10-5…pH = 5
Basics of pH
• Acid-base reactions…H+ exchanged between chemical
species
• Acid…H+ donor
• Base…H+ receiver
• H+ concentration in water solution…indication of
hydrogen ion availability
• pH measures [H+]
• pH <7 = acid
• pH = 7…neutral
• pH > 7…base
Environmental significance of pH

• pH determination is one of the important objectives in

biological treatment of the wastewater
• Anaerobic treatment...pH < 5...affects the process •
Aerobic treatment...pH > 5...10...upsets the process •
Dewatering of sludges and reduction of hexavalent
chromium into trivalent chromium also need a
favourable pH range
Environmental significance of pH
• pH determines the chemical and biological properties of
water
• Toxicity of certain substances relate to pH, for example, •
The ionised form of ammonia (NH3), which predominates at
low pH, is the less toxic ammonium ion (NH4+)
Measurement of pH
• Electronic pH meter
• Valid pH measurement of water sample …done in situ • Many
processes alter pH
• Loss/gain of dissolved CO2
Standard
values of pH

• Drinking water: 6.5 – 8.5

• Unpolluted river water: 6.5-8.5
• Average ocean pH: about 8.1*
• Normal, clean rain has a pH value between 5.0 and 5.5**
