What Are the Effects of Advertisements

2c on Children?

Advertisements inform, persuade and remind costumers about the

product, services or a cause. These have affected costumer in various ways.
Did you ever want to buy or eat something because you saw it on television,
newspaper, or on a billboard? You almost certainly did.
This module, “Values Suggested in Advertisements” is specially
designed for you to learn the positive and negative effects advertisements
may have on you. After using this module, you are expected to master the
activities presented herein.
Do not worry, we will be working together to finish this!

What’s In

Does advertisement actually affect children?

Advertisements can have positive and negative effects or
both on children based on the content, quality and presentation.
The ad makers formulate ways of attracting the
consumers to buy their product and tend to purchase it. If a company has
to survive in this competitive world it should attract the children by
different images and other techniques used.
Some Positive Effects on Children
•Advertising makes the kids aware of the new products available in the
market. It increases their knowledge about the latest innovations in the
field of technology like new models of cell phone.
•Convincing ads which focus around the healthy food products, can help
improve the diet of a child, if they are attracting enough.

4
•Ads encouraging the kids to take part in the campaign for a healthy
environment thus saving mother earth.
•Advertisements also call the attention of children towards the
problem and can encourage them to be a part of the solution as
problem on climate change.
•Advertisements that reveal the consequences of alcohol and
smoking can also help children understand the risks associated, and
urge them to stay clear of such products.
•Advertisements may also have motivating content that can
encourage children to choose a profession or chase a specific dream.
•Advertisements that present other children of a similar age engaging
in activities like helping out in the house or saving can influence kids
to do the same.
Some Negative Effects on Children
•Children are essentially defenseless against ads and commercials
because they can't understand the concept of something being sold
to them and many times they take what they hear and see literally.
If an advertisement says the new robot is the best toy ever, kids may
believe it to be true.
•Advertisements encourage the children to persuade their parents to
purchase the products shown in the advertisements whether they
are useful or not.
•Many advertisements include dangerous stunts which kids may
resort to imitate.
•The kids usually get more attracted towards most costly branded
products even though parents cannot afford to purchase such.
•Junk foods such as pizzas, burgers and soft drinks are heavily
promoted during the T.V. viewing time that develops a craving for
fatly, sugary and fast foods in kids, thereby affecting their health
badly.
•The message of the advertisement may be interpreted the wrong way
and children may focus mainly on the negatives rather than the
positives.
•Children may also tend to have lower self-esteem if they believe
themselves to be inferior for not owning the various products that
are advertised, especially if their friends possess these items.
•The visual portrayal of certain inappropriate acts in the adverts like
lying or cheating can make a vulnerable child believe that the
behaviour is acceptable.
5
