Plot
Marcus Luttrell and his team set out a mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad
Shah, in late June 2005. Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most
valiant efforts of modern warfare.
Setting
The setting in this story is in the mountains of Afghanistan in 2005. This affects the characters
because the mountain was very rocky with little vegetation. Also, the mountain was very steep
making it tiring for the team to travel. This was bad for the team because the snipers were in
little or no cover to kill the Taliban leader. Also during the gun fight when the Taliban were
shooting down the hill at the Navy Seals, it was hard to fire back and to retreat.
Mood
The mood it’s basically anxious and scared. Anxious when they were getting a spot to snipe
from and when the released the Taliban spy’s back to their village. Scared when around 200
Taliban soldiers were shooting at them. “It was the first time in my entire six year career as a
Navy Seal that I had been really scared” –Marcus Luttrell
Theme
Marcus is trying tell us to never give up. No matter how bad everything seems, it will get better.
He survived days in the Afghanistan Mountains with no food or water, being captured and three
firefights. Marcus said, “A wise man once said, it’s hard to be someone who never gives."
Conflict
Marcus is trapped on the mountain and it is man vs man. Marcus was fighting the entire Afghan
army. He runs into several Afghanistan solider but is able to escape. He sleeps in small caves
and is finally helped by local herders who bring him to a village.
Climax
Operation Red Wing was a reconnaissance mission that Seal Team 7 was ordered to do. The
mission was to get feet on the ground and look for Afghanistan soldiers and see what intel they
could collect. The team captured three sheep herders and let them go. Soon after, they were
ambushed and were forced to jump off several 30 foot ledges to escape. Danny, Axe, and
Mikey died after three long fights.
Resolution
Marcus makes it out by being assisted by some friendly villagers. The village elder makes more
than a 30 miles hike over the mountains to a U.S. base to get help for Marcus.
