Tutorial Week 2

1. What are the characteristics of a mobile computing environment?

Portability - The Ability to move a device within a learning environment or

to different environments with ease.

Social Interactivity - The ability to share data and collaboration between

users.

Context Sensitivity - The ability to gather and respond to real or simulated

data unique to a current location, environment, or time.

Connectivity - The ability to be digitally connected for the purpose of

communication of data in any environment.

Individual - The ability to use the technology to provide scaffolding on

difficult activities and lesson customization for individual learners.

Small Size - Mobile devices are also known as handhelds, palmtops and
smart phones due to their roughly phone-like dimensions. A typical mobile
device will fit in the average adult's hand or pocket.

Wireless Communication - Mobile devices are typically capable of

communication with other similar devices, with stationary computers and
systems, with networks and portable phones.

2. Give examples of five mobile computing applications.

Traffic
Emergencies Situation
Use in Business
Credit Card Verification
Replacement of Fixed Networks
Infotainment
News applications
Weather
Location
Mobile banking
Game
Social media
Statistic application
Multimedia

3. Describe the variants of Mobile computing.

Laptops

Smartwatch

Tablet pc

Ipods

pads

4. Describe the various aspects of mobility with respect to mobile

computing.
There are two different kinds of mobility: • user mobility and device portability.
User mobility refers to a user who has • access to the same or similar
telecommunication services at different places, i.e.,the user can be mobile, and the
services will follow him or her.

User mobility – is the ability to move from one location to another using the same service
Network mobility– user is moving from 1 network to another using the same service
seamlessly

Bearer mo- user is able to move from one bearer to another n uses the same service

Session m- a user session must be able to move from one user agent to another

Host mo- user device can be a client or a server

5. What should be the characteristics of mobile computing devices?

. Portability. The Ability to move a device within a learning environment or to

different environments with ease.
. Social Interactivity. The ability to share data and collaboration between users.
. Context Sensitivity. Situations
. Connectivity.
. Individual.

6. Briefly describe the following networks with examples and applications:

[1] Wired network,
A wired network is a common type of wired configuration. Most wired networks use
Ethernet cables to transfer data between connected PCs. In a small wired network, a
single router may be used to connect all the computers. Larger networks often involve
multiple routers or switches that connect to each other.

LAN

Ethernet

Coaxial cable

[2] Wireless network

Wireless network is a network set up by using radio signal frequency to communicate
among computers and other network devices. Sometimes it's also referred to as
WiFi network or WLAN. This network is getting popular nowadays due to easy to setup
feature and no cabling involved.

Hotspot
Bluetooth

Radio taxis

Wireless mics

Mobile phone

and [3] Ad hoc networks

Ad hoc networks are created between two or more wireless PCs together, without the
use of a wireless router or an access point. The computers communicate directly with
each other. Ad hoc networks can be very helpful during meetings or in any location
where a network doesn't exist and where people need to share files.

7. What are the differences between middleware and gateways? Enunciate

with examples in the context of mobile computing.
Middleware (any software led btw user and application) can be used for many things
like speeding up data queries, caching, etc. Usually, middleware contains SQL
Materialized VIEWS. Middleware can be used to filter only required data to a smaller
database from huge ODS or database. Gateway:(are devices to connect two diff
networks) Gateway is just a single entry point for clients to call API services

8. How would you broadly classify mobile computing applications?

mobile computing is to develop system, add more features to mobiles and hand hold
things which make life easier and application level software, which is working with
battery or battery powered terminals equipped with the wireless network connection.

Personal applications

Perishable applications

Transaction applications

Location specific applications

Corporate applications

Entertainment applications

9. Who are the players in wireless space? Explain the role of each of them
assuming you are going to launch a mobile computing application in the
commercial domain and what should you be prepared with for tackling
them?

HP

Apple

Samsung

Google
