1. Introduction
The corona virus that is currently pandemic in our country is causing
material and non-material losses and a fairly high mortality rate. So daily
activities are hampered and the government implements the PSBB to
prevent transmission of the corona virus, by conducting learning at home
and work from home (WFH) and limiting activities outside the house. The
corona virus can be transmitted through the droplets (saliva splashes) that
are produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or exhales. The
droplet is too heavy and cannot stay in the air, so it quickly falls and sticks
to the floor or other surface.
In order to keep running the activities, the government has implemented
normal Era New policies in several public places. One of them is a train
station that has a high number of passengers, by implementing several
health protocols to prevent the transmission of Covid-19. For this reason,
the government urges train users to wear masks and keep their distance. The
station also provides a hand sanitizer in every corner of the station.
In addition, waiting chairs are also a part of the spotlight in the
transmission of Covid 19 because waiting chairs that are used
interchangeably with several people can cause virus transmission so that
routine sterilization is needed. Therefore, in the 1st Industrial Design
Project, we designed an innovative product in the form of a self-sterilizing
chair to reduce the risk of contracting the corona virus. because the corona
virus is spreading rapidly.
The waiting chairs that we have developed not only have a function to be a
waiting room for trains, but are also equipped with new innovations during
this pandemic such as providing disinfectants and hand sanitizers that
function to kill bacteria and corona viruses attached to train waiting chairs.
So that bacteria and corona viruses can be avoided from train users. With
the Self Sterilizing Chair, it allows users to sterilize the waiting chair
independently according to their needs without disturbing the activities of
1
other users, and there is a hand sanitizer if you want to clean your hands
when handling electronic or other items.
The high need for respondents who need a safe and comfortable waiting
chair during this pandemic. Respondents also want chairs that are sturdy and
durable and have features that comply with health protocols. There are
several things that the respondent wants, waiting chairs at train stations must
have a divider or keep the distance between users, besides the respondent
also suggested equipping waiting chairs with disinfectants, hand sanitizers,
and cup holders.
2. Problem Purposes
Waiting chairs are an important part of train stations, but with the covid
transmission, the 19 waiting chairs currently available are not yet effective
in preventing the transmission of covid 19. The following problems that
occur with the existing waiting chairs are:
a) The community feels the existing waiting chairs have not been able to
prevent them from contracting Covid 19.
b) People sometimes find it difficult to find waiting chairs with health
protocols.
c) The community feels the waiting chair requires additional disinfectants
and cup holders.
d) The hand sanitizer place is less efficient because it does not have an
automatic sensor.
3. Research Purposes
The objectives in designing a waiting chair are as follows:
a) Creating product innovations during a pandemic that can provide
comfort and security for train station users.
b) Creating a waiting chair equipped with disinfectant and hand sanitizer.
c) As input to the station to get the design or concept of the passenger
waiting chair desired by the user.
2
d) Designing efficient, effective and ergonomic waiting chairs according to
the the needs of the users.
4. Scope of Problems
In developing waiting seat products there are several limitations of the
problem, namely:
a) This product is only intended for train station users.
b) Product development taking into account minimal production costs.
c) This product is only used during the Covid-19 pandemic.
d) This product doesn’t fully use automatic features, only some features.

put things, hand sanitizers, bulkheads, disinfectants, foot rests, comfortable
backs, and users want black and aluminium.
6. Literature Review
In conducting the design of this waiting chair product, it is necessary to
conduct a literature review as a scientific basis used during the design
process such as theoretical basic and benchmark.
literature review of the waiting seat products as follows:
A. Basic Theory
1. Product Planning
Product planning is the initial stage in creating an idea for the
product to be created that covers all aspects both in terms of cost,
quality, function, materials, efficiency, and ergonomics. Then when
12
all aspects are fulfilled this process will continue until the product
can be introduced to the market and consumers. And in product
planning must have another strategy if the product fails in its
marketing.
2. Ergonomics
Ergonomics is a science that utilizes information about the nature,
capabilities and limitations of humans in order to make a working
system that is effective, comfortable, safe, healthy and efficient.
Ergonomics one of them explains the good work attitude that
includes sitting positions. Ergonomic seats can support a seat
position at a suitable height, so that the posture is right and can sit
comfortably.
3. Anthropometry
Anthropometry is a science used to consider whether or not the
manufacture of a product or work system. In realizing the comfort of
a product, one of the things that must be considered is the way of
measuring the human body for the product. A seating design should
be attempted in such a way that the weight supported by the sitting
bone is spread on a fairly wide base and can change position or
posture to reduce discomfort.

4. Engineering Materials
Engineering materials is a science that studies the materials used in
the manufacture of a product. In designing the product we must also
know the material that matches the criteria of the product to be made.
By studying various types of materials will help the process of
designing products so that the product has the desired properties. In
addition, technical materials can effectively cost in terms of the
proper use of materials.
B. Benchmarking
In the preparation of the initial concept of sterile waiting chair products,
it is necessary to compare with existing products in the market.
Benchmarking of products on the market is useful to develop
innovations – innovations in the tools of products we make. There are
also things to note such as the advantages and disadvantages of the
existing goods.
1. Disinfectant Chamber
14
Disinfectant booth is a place used to sterilize various kinds of goods,
such as chairs, tables, mobile phones, and others. It can also sterilize
people to rid their bodies of viruses and bacteria.
15
Cup holder has a function to ensure the drink remains in place and
stands upright, not tilted which makes the contents can spill. In
addition, these accessories also have a unique and diverse shape.

7. Research Methodology
In designing this tool, we do the steps to apply the concept of designing
waiting seats to be a useful product for train users during the covid-19
outbreak. The following is the research methodology for creating waiting
chairs:
a) Identify problems and formulate problems that are in accordance with
the background of the problem accompanied by data obtained in the
field related to the designed product.
b) Conduct or find sources of information for production activities
through various media, either from the internet, books or other sources
available.
17
c) Create an initial questionnaire to find out the complaints of the
community in using the waiting seats in the train station and make the
initial concept of the survey.
d) Make a proposal to submit the concept that has been made.
e) Create an advanced questionnaire to find out which train lounge seats
are useful and comfortable to use.
f) Conduct adequacy tests of advanced questionnaire data in order for the
request to be met.
g) Design products based on advanced questionnaires.
h) Analyze the product in terms of ergonomics so that the user feels
comfortable when using it.
i) Analyze the results of the final product design.
j) Create the final product design.

The design concept that our group offers is a waiting chair with health
protocol features covid-19 prevention in the form of manual disinfectant
sprayers using feet to sterilize the chair and its users, there is also a hand
sanitizer that uses hand sensors and finally equipped with a cup holder for
users to place their drinks.
Based on the benchmarks we have chosen, there are three concepts of the
waiting chair design that we have planned for our products:
A. First Concept
The first concept that we designed is a waiting chair equipped with
disinfectant, hand sanitizer, acrylic barrier and cup holder. In general, the
waiting chairs in the train station are not currently in accordance with
health protocols so we develop waiting chairs that comply with existing
health protocols by adding disinfectants that can be pressed using the
feet (without the touch of a hand), hand sanitizer on the side of the
waiting chair and also cup holders that make it easier for users to put the
drink holder they carry. The concept works very easily when someone
wants to sit in the waiting chair they can press the button under their feet
so that the existing disinfectant can sterilize the waiting seat they want to
sit on. If they want to use a hand sanitizer they just need to reach out
their hand to the tool and it will automatically release the hand sanitizer
liquid into the hands of the users. and lastly for their cup holder is useful
to place the drinking they are carrying so that they do not have to bother
to hold their drinking. The material that we will use for chairs is wood
with chair legs using stainleessteel, while for disinfectant buffers we will
use materials in the form of iron pipes. This first concept image can be
seen in figure 8.1 of the First Concept.
20
Gambar 8.1 First Concept
B. Second Concept
The second concept, we made a waiting chair with a different shape
from the first concept that we replaced the chair with HDPE plastic
material that can be folded and we use iron pipe to buffer disinfectant
sprayer. Then we also provide an automatic hand sanitizer place that is
on the side of the waiting chair, if they want to use the tool they just
need to reached out their hand to the hand sanitizer and automatically the
tool will issue hand sanitizer into the hands of the users, we also give
acrylic barrier between the chairs one with the other and also cup holder
to put a drinking, while the disinfectant tube is on the left side of the
right folding chair. For how to use the disinfectant can press the button
using the foot (without the touch of a hand) that we have made beside
the waiting chair. The concept works very easily when someone wants to
sit in the waiting chair they can press the button under their feet so that
the existing disinfectant can sterilize the waiting chair they want to sit
21
on. This Second Concept Image can be seen in figure 8.2 of the Second
Concept.
C. Third Concept
The third concept, we made a waiting chair with a different concept
because in this concept we made a barrier between the two seats as a
separator between the left seat and the right seat. On the barrier there is
an acrylic glass and the rest of the barrier can be used to put things such
as places to eat, places to drink, mobile phones and others. We also
22
added an automatic hand sanitizer that is on the side of the waiting chair.
For the disinfectant system we use the same as the first and second
concept is to use a disinfectant that can be used by pressing the button
beside the waiting chair.
This third concept image can be seen in figure 8.3 of the Third Concept.
