THERMODYN

STEADY-STATE, STEADY-FLOW SYSTEMS

SAMPLE PROBLEMS:

1. An internally reversible process occurs in a system during which Q = – 12 kJ, ΔU = – 79 kJ, and ΔH
= – 111 kJ. Determine, the shaft work if the system is steady-state, steady-flow with ΔKE = 2 kJ.

Solution: Since ΔH is given, we will use Q = ΔPE + ΔKE + ΔH + Wsf.

Also, no elevations (z1 and z2) were given, we let ΔPE = 0 kJ.
Wsf = Q – ΔPE – ΔKE – ΔH
= – 12 – 0 – 2 – (– 111)

Wsf = 97 kJ

2. Assume 5 lbm/sec of fluid enter a steady-state, steady-flow system with p 1 = 100 psia, 𝜌1
= 0.2 lbm/ft3 , v́1 = 100 fps, 𝑢1 = 800 Btu/lbm, and leave with p2 = 20 psia, 𝜌2 = 0.05 lbm/ft3,
v́2 = 500 fps, 𝑢2 = 780 Btu/lbm. During passage through the open system, each pound
rejects 10 Btu of heat. Find the work in horsepower.

Solution: Q = ΔPE + ΔKE + ΔU + ΔWf + Wsf
