1. ANIME Petrochemicals operates one of its furnaces on natural gas and another on oil (mole natural gas/mass
fuel oil = 1 lbmol/10 lb). Analysis of the natural gas shows 96% CH4, 2% C2H2, and 2% H2. The oil is found to
contain 88% carbon, the rest being hydrogen (reported as molecular hydrogen) and sulfur. The flue gases
from both furnaces enter the same stack, and an Orsat analysis of this combined flue gas shows 8.36% CO 2,
0.53% CO, 7.66% O2, and 83.45% N2 on an SO2-free basis. Calculate the following:
a) Percentage of the total carbon burned which comes from the oil
b) Complete analysis of the oil
2. A high-grade petroleum fuel oil containing 5.2% S is being burned in a furnace. The flue is analyzed carefully
over mercury without prior removal of SO2 (which is therefore reported along with the SO2), showing 13.9%
CO2 (+ SO2), 0.4% CO, 0.1% H2, 2.4% O2, and 83.2% inerts. What is the analysis of the fuel? Assume that the
fuel contains carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur only.
3. A process for methanol synthesis is shown in the figure below. The pertinent chemical reactions involved are:
The methanol reactor effluent is cooled to condense all the methanol and water, with the noncondensable
gases recycled to the methanol reactor feed. The H2/CO2 ratio in the recycle stream is also 3:1.
Because the methane contains 1% nitrogen as an impurity, a portion of the recycle stream must be purged out
to prevent the accumulation of inerts. The purge stream analyzes 5% nitrogen.
On the basis of 100 mol of methane feed (including N2), calculate the:
a) Moles of H2 lost in the purge
b) Moles of makeup CO2 required
c) Recycle to purge ratio
d) Amount (in kg) and strength (in weight percent) of methanol solution produced
