Steps on how to determine the random variables on any events or
experiments.
1. Determine the sample space. Assign letters that will represents each
outcome.
2. Count the number of the value of the random variable (Capital Letter
assiged)
Example:
Tossing Three Coins
Suppose three coins are tossed. Let Y be the random variable representing the number of tails
that occur. Find the values of the random variable Y. Complete the table below.
Steps Solution
1. Determine the sample
space. Let H represent head The sample space for this experiment is:
and T represent tail. S = { TTT,TTH,THT,HTT, HHT, HTH, THH, HHH}
III. Activities
Activity 1: How Can you solve it?
A.Suppose there are three people to be tested in Covid-19 in Masbate. Let P represent positive,
N, represent negative and W be the random variable representing the number of infected person
that occur. Find the random variable W.
Possible Outcomes Value of the Random Variable Z
B. The winners will be drawn from 5 SHS teachers (S) and 7 JHS teachers (J). Let Z the random
variables representing the JHS teachers. Find the values of the random variable Z.
Possible Outcomes Value of the Random Variable Z

Activity 2: Can you classify me?
Directions: Classify the following random variables as discrete or continuous.
