1. Notable Inventions and Contributions of Filipinos to Science


a. Del Mundo revolutionized Philippine medicine, making major breakthroughs
in immunization and in the treatment of jaundice, and providing healthcare
to thousands of poor families. She is credited with studies that led to the
invention of the incubator and a jaundice relieving device. Her methods, like
the BRAT diet for curing diarrhea, have spread throughout the world and
saved millions.
b. Eduardo Quisumbing is pioneer in the study of Philippine medicinal plants
where he made tremendous contribution. His book Medicinal Plants in
Philippines is the forerunner of all researches on medicinal plants in the
country. This has an enormous impact on how the DOH recommends herbal
alternatives to medicine that has a therapeutic effect.
c. Maria Orosa experimented with foods native to the Philippines, and during
World War II developed Soyalac (a nutrient rich drink from soybeans) and
Darak (rice cookies packed with vitamin B-1, which could also prevent
beriberi disease), which she also helped smuggle into Japanese-run
internment camps which helped save the lives of thousands of Filipinos,
Americans, and other nationals. She introduced to the public the well-known
banana ketchup.
d. Agapito Flores is the Filipino inventor is known for his funnel of the
Fluorescent light tube invention – one of the most used lighting device in the
world.
e. Eduardo San Juan co-invented the Moon Buggy or the Lunar Rover. This
Moon buggy was the car used by Neil Armstrong and other astronauts when
they first explored the moon in 1969. 
f. Abelardo Aguilar discovered the antibiotic from the Aspergillus species of
fungi in 1949 and sent samples to Indiana-based pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly
Co. The drug firm allegedly registered the propriety name Iloson for the
antibiotic in honor of Iloilo province where Aguilar discovered it.
Erythromycin, the generic name of Iloson, was reportedly the first successful
macrolide antibiotic introduced in the US.

2. Insights (ASSIGNMENT 2)

a. The incredible breakthroughs in science and technology by our Filipino


scientists has helped address crucial problems in the fields of health and
medicine, and even with daily living.
b. This all occurred because innovation is supported and encouraged.
c. Compared to before, we now lack even the minimum number of scientists
and technologists needed for innovation-driven development. As a result, we
suffer from low industrial and agricultural productivity; as characterized by
the government importing rice, overall inefficiency, and a meager output of
knowledge products, such as scientific publications, patents, and innovations.
